Makarios I greet you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I am your new interim parish priest. I am originally from Kenya and am married with two children. My full name is Fr. Makarios Dickson Mwaura Nganga and I was ordained 8 years ago in Nairobi Kenya. I have served 3 parishes in Kenya and the Denver Cathedral for 6 months as interim assistant priest. I have also served the Metropolis of Boston as a substitute priest for the last few years. I went to the seminary in Nairobi and later joined the school of Theology for a Masters Degree in Theological Studies. As we embark on this journey together I look forward to addressing to your liturgical and spiritual well being. I believe in teamwork and together we can reestablish all the church ministries and move towards renewal in the coming months. Your contribution in any way will be highly appreciated. I look forward to meeting you on October 20th. God bless you abundantly. BEFORE AND AFTER AN EXPERIENCE WITH CHRIST. Luke 8:26-39 In most of the stories of possession what is at issue is not merely sickness but a destruction and distortion of the divine likeness of man according to creation. The center of personality, the volitional and active ego, is impaired by alien powers which seek to ruin the man and sometimes drive him to self-destruction (Mk. 5:5). The ego is so impaired that the spirits speak through him. Jesus is conscious that He now breaks the power of the devil and his angels because He is the One in whom the dominion of God is present on behalf of humanity. W. Foerster, as quoted by William Lane, Gospel of Mark, fn. 4, p This quote from Lane illustrates the consequences of the fall of man and the subsequent torment by evil forces; Christ appears as a knight and delivers man from this torment, his supreme authority evident by the way he is addressed by the demoniac or demoniacs depending on which gospel version you are reading. In Matthew and Mark, there are two demoniacs and in Luke there is just one, which according to the fathers is not a contradiction only that in the first two he deals with the stronger one of the two. Am also inclined to suggest that in using the word legion; it just shows how much control the demons have over this men. It would also be not worthy to perceive the power bestowed on this men by the demons, no man could pass their way, no chains could hold them just shows how powerful they were,
3 they were under influence until Christ came their way and their immense untouchable power melts in the face of Jesus Christ. The fact that they recognize Him, not in the third person but directly as the Son of the most High; gives the definite acknowledgement that they are aware of who Christ is and his capabilities, his abilities and his potential to banish them at that moment into the abyss, but instead choses to honor their choice to go into the swine. The fact that this men sit at the feet of Jesus Christ brings out to the reader that Christ is the Lord of all creation; he has power over and above our imagination. The fact that Christ does not allow this men to follow shows his mission as one that releases from captivity and empowers to be his disciples to their own people, he sends them back to people who will be amazed at that kind of power that would bring men who were so feared could be the instruments of evangelization. They are a testimony of the power behind this man Jesus. Think about why they sent Jesus away from their territory and ask yourself why they could not not this man who could do a lot more for them in the long run. Many people fear change and this is one of the profound reasons, secondly this men were to go back to society, were the people ready for them? And finally what would happen to the rest of their swine? If this big number of swine could be driven away from them, then they foresaw a meltdown of their economy if this man Jesus Christ set camp in their city. The lessons to be learned from this episode is that you can never be the same when you encounter Christ, he is able to lift you up from any depths, he is able to change your status, he is able to make you from a nobody to somebody. He is able to deal with any challenge in your life and give you a complete turn around. No matter how strong or powerful you would be in this world, no matter what influence, you will always be subdued by his power. Your ego and materialistic foundations will be shaken in the presence of Christ, your position in society is of no significance to Christ, and he is ready to give you a new beginning, a new life and a new status. You can be a new creation. In Christ there is hope, there is a promise of a better future and a renewal of our souls and bodies, there is a cleansing of the heart and a new testimony for our lives. Our lives can and will be transformed to such an extent that everyone will also attest to your new status quo. Society will stop branding you and start appreciating you. Those who rejected you in the past will embrace and clothe you. Every encounter with Christ is a unique experience, something beyond our expectations will happen, it s up to you; are you ready for a Christ encounter?

11 Donations of Nonperishable Items and Supplies This holiday season our Church has decided to focus on helping two local charities in need of our support. The first organization is the Newport Food Pantry. Please place your offerings in the front of the Church in the same way you might make your candle offering. We will place a basket upstairs in the Church in which donations of nonperishable items (canned goods, boxes) can be placed. These items will be delivered to the Newport Food Pantry the week prior to Christmas. The second organization is the Turning Points Network (formerly known as Women s Supportive Services). Newport and Claremont share a 16-bed emergency shelter that services our local families. The shelter wish list includes: paper goods (paper towels, toilet paper, napkins), child and environmentally-friendly cleaning supplies, toiletries (shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, deodorant, hair brushes, combs), dish detergent, diapers and wipes, movie or recreation center passes, gas, phone and food cards.
