3 Where Are You? It takes a budget of approximately $50,000 per month to do what we do as a Christian community of worship, witness and service. And we would like to do better and more! Presently there are 170 households in our congregation making a financial pledge to the church. The average pledge is $2,300. Some members just can t do that much, others recognize that they can do much more, and our goal is that all of our families become investors... investing ourselves in Christian mission and ministry. The chart bellow shows the distribution of pledges for Where are you? Where do you want to be? # Pledge amount Givers $1-$ $500-$ $1000-$ $2500-$ $5000-$ $7500-$ $10, Disaster Relief THANK YOU!!! A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make the reception for Pastor Josh special. It was a lovely way to continue the celebration that began with a wonderful worship service. Barb Pankoke and Wyonne Hegland As rain, flooding and wind have displaced many in the wake of recent hurricanes, United Church of Christ Disaster Ministries have turned to congregations to help overcome a shortage of much-needed cleanup buckets, stocked with essential supplies that are used after a disaster strikes. Wednesday, October 4, the Youth Group and Mission Committee will host an event for the WHOLE FAMILY in Rogers 7PM to assemble the Cleanup Buckets and prepare them to be shipped out. Fall Book Groups One of the strengths of CUCC is the tradition of book study groups, reading together and discussing with each other, exploring our faith and growing in relationship with God and neighbor. This fall, Pastor Dave and Pastor Josh are leading study groups focused on two books of especially timely interest. In the Name of Jesus, by Henri Nouwen (Crossroad, 1989) is a book of reflections on the nature and quality of leadership. For a society that is increasingly disappointed as it measures successful leadership in terms of the effectiveness of the individual, Nouwen offers a counter definition informed by the Christian tradition in which effective leadership is recognized as a communal and mutual experience. Discussion of this book will be on Tuesdays, 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., September 19 through November 14. How To Read the Bible and Still Be A Christian, by John Dominic Crossan (HarperOne, 2017) struggles with divine violence in the scripture, and raises many questions about political appeals to violence for just purposes and/or in the name of God. Crossan guides his readers on a deep and reflective reading, meant to be shared in community, to understand the competing visions of a loving and vengeful God. Discussion of this book will be on Mondays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., September 18 through November 13. These groups are open, but interested persons are asked to sign up on the Christian Ed board. The sign up sheet for 2017 is now posted on the Worship Bulletin Board. Please sign up today. Join us for our Wednesday morning service... Wednesday Morning 7:00AM We will meet for Communion, prayer, reflection, and coffee. September 28, 2017 The Congregational United Church of Christ, St. Charles IL Page 3

7 Novel Approaches Sign up on the CE bulletin board. November 10th: THE PAINTED VEIL (1925) by W. Somerset Maugham; discussion at the home Janet Zohorsky Set in England and Hong Kong in the 1920s, The Painted Veil is the story of the beautiful but lovestarved Kitty Fane. When her husband discovers her adulterous affair, he forces her to accompany him to the heart of a cholera epidemic. Stripped of the British society of her youth and the small but effective society she fought so hard to attain in Hong Kong, she is compelled by her awakening conscience to reassess her life and learn how to love. A beautifully written affirmation of the human capacity to grow, to change, and to forgive. Maugham was among the most popular and successful writers of his era. January 19th: THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG (2008) by Muriel Barbery; discussion at the home of Josephine and Peter Ball In a bourgeois apartment building in Paris, we encounter Renée, an intelligent, philosophical, and cultured concierge who masks herself as the stereotypical uneducated super to avoid suspicion from the building s pretentious inhabitants. Also living in the building is Paloma, the adolescent daughter of a parliamentarian, who has decided to commit suicide on her thirteenth birthday because she cannot bear to live among the rich. Although they are passing strangers, it is through Renée s observations and Paloma s journal entries that The Elegance of the Hedgehog reveals the absurd lives of the wealthy. That is until a Japanese businessman moves into the building and brings the two characters together. A critical success in France Resistance is futile. You might as well buy it before someone recommends it for your book group. Its charm will make you say yes. The Guardian. March 16th: THE ART OF HEARING HEARTBEATS (2012) by Jan-Philipp Sendker; discussion at the home of Trish and J.T. Thompson A poignant and inspirational love story set in Burma, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats spans the decades between the 1950s and the present. When a successful New York lawyer suddenly disappears without a trace, neither his wife nor his daughter Julia has any idea where he might be until they find a love letter he wrote many years ago, to a Burmese woman they have never heard of. Intent on solving the mystery and coming to terms with her father s past, Julia decides to travel to the village where the woman lived. There she uncovers a tale of unimaginable hardship, resilience, and passion that will reaffirm the reader s belief in the power of love to move mountains a huge hit in Europe A beautiful tale bound to enchant readers on this side of the Atlantic. Booklist. May 18th: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD (2016) by Colson Whitehead; discussion at the home of Marilyn and Dave Schave Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and #1 New York Times best seller. Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted. In Whitehead s ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the unique terrors for black people in the pre Civil War era, his narrative seamlessly weaves the saga of America from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. Rev. Helga Cornell will be visiting St. Charles from September 29- Oct. 5 or 6, 2017 Time to get out the silver! Helga is looking forward to catching up with old friends and meeting new ones as well. She will be staying with the Powells during this time. Following her time in St. Charles, she will be visiting John and Susan Rodgers for an urban experience in Chicago. We are hoping to plan a number of exciting activities while Helga is in town. On Saturday evening, Sept. 30 we have a ticket for Helga to join some of the church folks at the Paramount Theater to see Million Dollar Quartet. Other than that, her schedule is wide open. Perhaps a trip to the Morton Arboretum to get some fancy English toffee in the gift shop. Please let the Powell s know if you would like to spend some time with her during her visit. They will be coordinating her schedule while she is in town. September 28, 2017 The Congregational United Church of Christ, St. Charles IL Page 7

9 Just What Do You Do at Night Ministry? Although we have been volunteers at The Night Ministry for several years there are always questions about what one does during a Night Ministry trip. This is a NIGHT MINISTRY trip in a nutshell. Remember, this is a rain or shine, hot or cold weather event! The trip begins with packing the van with the food that has been so generously donated. Departure is usually a couple of hours before we serve depending on where we are going. Upon arrival at our site, we are met by The Night Ministry team in either the Health Outreach bus or the Youth Outreach van who provide services to the guests throughout the two hour stay. Tables are set up on the street and our volunteers set out the food we have brought. In warm weather it is sandwiches, chips, fruit, water and cookies. In cold weather hot soup or hot baked potatoes is added to the menu. A least one volunteer is at each of the food stations to distribute the food. Our guests who have been given a plastic bag in which to place their food go through the line choosing what they would like to have. Once all guests have been served the first time, they may come back for seconds or even thirds if we still have food. Thank you and God bless you abound as the guests go through the line. Serving time is usually about two hours as there are always persons who arrive late and need to be given food. Often we have t shirts, socks or coats to distribute as well which are desperately needed and so gratefully accepted. A volunteer from our group takes responsibility for this distribution. Can you visit with the guests? YES! Volunteers have the opportunity to chat as guests go through the line or while they are waiting for seconds. While some guests are very chatty there are others who prefer to remain in the background. Are there children? Again, it depends on the site but there are children, some who come alone, and others with a parent. Each site we serve has a little different clientele but each person who comes is in need of our compassion, prayers and love. Consider being a part of this very important mission of our church. It is a very rewarding experience and can be life changing. Sign up on the bright green Night Ministry board in Rodgers Hall. Things that are popular with The Night Ministry guests are sandwiches: ham or turkey (with or without cheese), roast beef, peanut butter and jelly (for big and little kids!). Corned beef on rye would be a nice change! Cookies: chocolate chips and snickerdoodles top the list but NEVER has a cookie of any type been turned down! Fruit: bananas, apples, pears, fruit cups. Peaches are difficult as they bruise easily. Feel free to be creative! Everything is appreciated! o If you would like more information or have questions, I will be happy to answer them. Wyonne Hegland In July 2017 I first experienced working with The Night Ministry. I volunteered again for September. It was an enlightening experience and I am very impressed with the organization of the effort. From those who donated food and made sandwiches to those who loaded the van and served the clients to The Night Ministry representatives who know the routine of the neighborhood, all I can say is, this is a very well-oiled machine. I am struck by the graciousness and gratefulness of the clients we serve. Everyone is very appreciative of our mission. The people we serve span the range of humanity, from small children to the elderly, all races and genders. Some are talkative, others quiet, but most are smiling, especially when they can make a choice from our offerings, ham or turkey, fruit cup or apple, what kind of cookie would you like? I am humbled by my work with The Night Ministry, knowing that I am forever thankful and blessed for my bounty. I am looking forward to November. Nonda Anderson NIGHT MINISTRY THANKS YOU Thank you to all who provided the food, organized and packed the van and went to Uptown to serve. We provide a meal with seconds for about persons including children. Look for sign-up sheets in Rodgers Hall for the November 19 trip to Humboldt Park where we will be serving baked potatoes with butter, sour cream and cheese. YUM!
