2 MEETINGS - EVENTS & F.Y.I. FROM PAAD Following worship today, lunch will be served in the, and the video telling the story of Tyrone Noling, an innocent man on Ohio's death row, will be shown. Brian Howe, who is Tyrone's OIP attorney, will be present at that time and will be available to answer questions that folks may have. Memorial Visitation for Alfred Ernst Bick - Today A memorial visitation for Dan Bick s father, Al Bick, will be held today, 2:00-5:00 p.m., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, West Side Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in his memory to Hospice of Cincinnati c/o Bethesda Foundation Montgomery Rd Cincinnati, OH Our prayers continue for the Bick family. TOMA (Teens of Mt. Auburn) Our TOMA youth are gearing up for two fundraising opportunities early in Beginning today (Jan. 21) TOMA will lead the congregation in a food drive (nonperishable food items), to benefit the Freestore Foodbank, culminating on February 4, Souperbowl Sunday. The 2 nd Annual Chili Cook-off is also in the works for the end of February (date TBA)! Proceeds from the Cook-off would benefit the youth who are interested in attending a Montreat Youth Conference in PRIDE PARADE 2018 This year s Pride Parade is on Saturday, June 23rd. Last year we were once again represented. People have been asking if we could perhaps take it to the next level and add a float! In order for us to do this we will need a committee of folks to design, plan, and execute. If you re interested, please contact Amy Grady by Monday, January 29, and let her know you want to be a part of our first-ever float in the parade. Based on responses, she will coordinate a meeting to discuss the process. ANNUAL MEETING REPORTS The Annual Meeting is set for Sunday, February 11. The deadline to submit reports to the church office for printing is Friday, February 2.

3 LENT, LENT, AND MORE LENT You know the pastor has attended a worthwhile event when she comes back and designs a whole season of worship themes around it! A number of you have asked about the "Creative Maladjustment" conference Pastor Stacey recently attended, so now you will have plenty of opportunities to explore what it means to be creatively maladjusted during the prime season for maladjustment, Lent. Each week in worship, we will consider a particular way in which Jesus was creatively maladjusted, and how we might be called to live in that example in our own place and time. Ash Wednesday, Feb MORTALITY Sunday, Feb RESISTANCE Sunday, Feb SELF-DENIAL Sunday, Mar. 4 - DISRUPTION Sunday, Mar EXPOSURE Sunday, Mar SACRIFICE Sunday, Mar HUMILITY Maundy Thursday, Mar. 29, 7pm - CROSS Easter, Apr. 1 RESURRECTION On Wednesday evenings at 6pm, beginning on Ash Wednesday before the 7pm service, there will be a casual soup supper with guided discussion around the theme from that Sunday's sermon. On Tuesdays at 12:30pm in the conference room, bring your lunch and join in a chat about the upcoming sermon topic, our Lenten disciplines, and how we maladjust together as a community of faith. These will be low-key opportunities to connect, with no preparation or commitment required. Despite the apparent heaviness of the themes, we lean toward a hopeful outlook on creative maladjustment, and laughter is guaranteed. FROM THE BOARD OF DEACONS SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER MAPC, Tuesday, February 13, 5 to 7 PM Featuring lip-smackin', made-from-scratch gourmet buttermilk-cornmeal pancakes with genuine Ohio maple syrup (the real thing!), fruit salad and freshly-ground Avril's Country Sausage patties! Gluten-free and vegetarian alternatives, too. Live music provided by Chris Miller & friends. Free admission. Donations will be solicited. ART IN THE HALLS: MAPC - The Beginning The First Fifty Years s For the next twelve months as part of our 150th Anniversary Celebration, the art gallery will be filled with memorabilia from our archives. The first exhibit is titled, MAPC - the Beginning, The First Fifty Years s. Although the exhibit is designed to be selfguided and self-explanatory, the curators of the exhibit, Val Bernardino and Nan Costello, with artistic help from Carl Ward, will do an artist s talk in February, the dates to be announced. So enjoy! And notice the differences and similarities between the old days and now. We were a church built on social justice and we remain that today.

4 PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION ENCOUNTERS Adult Encounters meets each Sunday, 9:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m., in the Geier Room. Adults of all ages are welcome! Sunday, January 28, Adult Encounters will have a guest speaker, Sister Andrea Koverman, from Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center (IJPC). She will lead us in a game of "Death Penalty Jeopardy". We will then break into smaller groups which will rotate to different "stations": viewing a 12 minute clip on Breaking the Cycle, which shows how prison life can be different with better outcomes; the opportunity to experience solitary confinement through 12 minute virtual reality; information on the Harvard Fair Punishment Study and current legislation. Sunday, February 4 Mt. Auburn Community and MAPC Throughout the Years. Our speakers are Anne Steinert and Professor Fritz Casey Leininger from the University of Cincinnati public history department. It promises to be an insightful look at our neighborhood throughout the years. Mark your calendars. TOMA (Teens of Mt. Auburn) for middle and high school aged youth, meets monthly for dinner and discussion about faith and our call to live as God's people. Contact Heather Graden or Ben Marston for information about how you or your youth can get involved! Godly Play, our education program for younger children (age 3 or so) through the primary grades, meets in the Education Wing during worship. GODLY PLAY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS! JUSTICE SEEKING ROUNDTABLES Next Sunday, January 28 th, during Coffee Hour, The Justice Seeking Committee will hold the first of several brief Roundtable discussions, with 4 of the Social Justice organizations we are involved with at this time. Brief 15 minute presentations & Q&A periods will be guided by leadership from the following groups: Safe & Supported (Melissa Myers) Black Lives Matter (Brian Taylor) Heartland TransWellness Group (Jonah Yokoyama) Off The Streets (Viann Barnett). OPEN STACKS BOOK CLUB February 2nd book club is Biography month at the home of Pat Basler. We gather at 7 with discussion at 7:30. The Feb. book is Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit by Chris Matthews. We will also say a word or two about last month s title, Skin Tight.
