2 FROM OUR PASTOR ST. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH January 21, 2018 Developing a Personal Relationship with Jesus Some recent surveys indicate that a good number of people do not feel they have or even believe in the possibility of having a personal relationship with Jesus or God. Perhaps this comes, in part, from a feeling of being almost overwhelmed by all that a person needs to do in order to survive in our world today or a feeling of personal unworthiness or a wondering of why life isn t somehow better. Because so many people today are not very intentional about being religious, and because all around there seems to be only residual traces of Christianity, people can wonder whether being a follower of Jesus and belonging to a church makes any real difference. On that first Pentecost, Peter stood up and proclaimed that Jesus is Lord. He showed how Jesus fulfilled the hopes of the Jewish people, which is why the people who heard Peter and the other Apostles asked, What are we to do? Peter responded, Repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:37-41) Even though we have been baptized, we too need to say, Jesus, I accept you as my Lord and Savior. Jesus wants to do for us, what he did for the people of his day. He wants to make us whole; to make us whole in mind, body and spirit; to make us whole in our relationships with God, the Father, and with one another. This is what it means to be forgiven, reconciled, and restored. Of all the Gospel stories, the one telling how the Father welcomed home his Prodigal Son best captures what Jesus wants for us. We come to develop a deeper personal relationship with Jesus as we reflect on how he interacted with the people of his day because this is the same way he wants to interact with us as well. A good way of doing this is by reading the Gospel accounts and stopping to imagine yourself in each of the events. What did Jesus do for the person involved? This is what Jesus wants to do for you and me as well. Luke s Gospel provides a good sample of the encounters Jesus has with the people of his day. His parables and teachings are easily understood. Yet every time we read them or hear them they have the power to renew our heart. We know we have accepted Jesus as Lord and that we are developing a true relationship with him when our relationships are becoming more life-giving to ourselves and others. So we can ask: What is Jesus calling me to with regard to my relationship with the world of creation; with my neighbors both close to me and far from me; with myself, and with Jesus and the ONE whom Jesus taught us to call Father?.What does Jesus call me to with regard to my other relationships? In doing this we will draw closer to Jesus himself.
