2 First Sunday of Advent The new church year begins with a wake-up call: Christ is coming soon! In today s readings both Paul and Jesus challenge us to wake from sleep, for we know neither the day nor hour of the Lord s coming. Isaiah proclaims the day when God will gather all people on the holy mountain and there will be no more war or suffering. Though we vigilantly watch for the promised day of salvation, we wait for what we already have: Christ comes among us this day as the word and meal that strengthens our faith in the promises of God. 3 Candle Lighting A: Today we light the first candle the candle of hope reminding us that Jesus was sent not only to be our Savior, but also to be our Wonderful Counselor; the one who hears our prayers with compassion, and who offers guidance when we seek it. As we begin the season of Advent, we remember that our rest can be found in God, and through the gifts of God s son our hope is forever restored. PRAYER OF THE DAY A: Gracious Lord, we thank you for your promises and for coming to earth as our Wonderful Counselor. As we begin our Advent journey, help us to know the abiding hope that comes from knowing that you will keep your promises to us. C: May we radiate that hope in everything we say and do. 4 WORD ISAIAH 2:1-5 A reading from Isaiah, the 2 nd chapter. 1 The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 In days to come the mountain of the Lord s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. 3 Many peoples shall come and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling 4

7 RESPONSE TO THE WORD Baptism of Paysen Jae Anderson Born: July 28, 2016 Daughter of Aaron and Stacy Sponsors: Emily Christmann, Landon Anderson, Brandy Peterson, Colton Christmann PRESENTATION P: In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. S: I present Paysen Jae Anderson for baptism. P: As you bring Paysen to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her among God s faithful people, to bring her to the word of God and the holy supper, to teach her the Lord s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, to place in her hands the holy scriptures, and nurture her in faith and prayer so that she may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. P: Do you promise to help Paysen grow in the Christian faith and life? S: I do. P: Do you promise to nurture Paysen in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God s Spirit, and to help her live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? S: I do. P: People of God, do you promise to support Paysen and pray for her in her new life in Christ? C: We do. PROFESSION OF FAITH 7

8 P: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? S: I renounce them. P: Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? S: I renounce them. P: Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? S: I renounce them. The congregation stands. P: Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Please be seated. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus death and resurrection you set us free from the power 8

9 of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, so that Paysen and all those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. C: Amen. Blessed be God, the source of all life, the word of salvation, the spirit of mercy. Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Paysen with the gift of your Holy Spirit; the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. A brief silence. For the church and its leaders, and for all who work for the unity of the gospel; that the compassion of Christ break down all divisions, let us pray. C: Have mercy, O God. A: For the well-being of creation, for mountains and hills, lakes and rivers, snow and sunshine, plants and animals, and for all who care for the earth; that God will raise up stewards to protect this good creation, let us pray. C: Have mercy, O God. P: For peace among nations, for those who lead all levels of government, for judges and magistrates, and for those who speak for the voiceless; that all are treated with equity and fairness, let us pray. C: Have mercy, O God. A: For those who are anxious and worried, for the sick and bereaved, for the homeless and imprisoned, for those in any need; that the compassion shown by Christ be embodied in caregivers and advocates, let us pray. C: Have mercy, O God. A: For those who gather for word and sacrament, for those who travel, and for our holiday preparations; that in all our activities we give thanks to the Lord, let us pray. C: Have mercy, O God. P: God of water and word, we ask that you bless Paysen as she is washed into your baptismal love and care. We also pray that you will walk with Aaron and Stacy, Taylor, Kenzey, and Paxten as they faithful raise Paysen. Help us, the members of American Lutheran, live out our call as a church to nurture and grow Paysen and her family in their life of faith, let us pray. C: Have mercy, O God. 10

11 A: In thanksgiving for those who have died and are at rest; that their witness to the gospel serve as examples of living the life of faith, let us pray. C: Have mercy, O God. P: Merciful God, hear the prayers of your people, those spoken aloud and those known only to you, and grant us peace through Jesus Christ, our coming Savior. C: Amen. P: Build yourselves up on your most holy faith; C: pray in the Holy Spirit. P: Keep yourselves in the love of God; C: look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. P: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: C: Everything old has passed away; behold, everything has become new! P: God has given us the ministry of reconciliation. When we brought on chaos, 11

12 cruelty and despair, you sent the prophets to proclaim your justice and mercy. At the end of the ages your Son Jesus came to bring us your love and to heal all the suffering world. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
