GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS * Gideon s CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Presiding Minister L: Lector C: Congregation P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. C: Amen. P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. C: Amen. GATHERING HYMN Christ is Alive, Let Christians Sing ELW #389 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Mysterious and Divine Presence, Too often our hearts burn within us because our bodies know before our minds that you are here working in us and through us in this world. C: Open our eyes, and help us to recognize you in all places and in all people, for the sake of the one whose presence is never far, Jesus Christ. Amen. The congregation is seated. WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. PSALM 30 L: We will read Psalm 30 responsively by full verse. 1 I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up, and did not let my foes rejoice over me. C: L: C: L: C: L: C: L: C: L: C: O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit. Sing praises to the Lord, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. As for me, I said in my prosperity, I shall never be moved. By your favor, O Lord, you had established me as a strong mountain; you hid your face; I was dismayed. To you, O Lord, I cried, and to the Lord I made supplication: What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me! O Lord, be my helper! You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever. 6
INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL On this Second Sunday of Easter, Jesus joins two disciples on the road to Emmaus and makes himself known to them in the breaking of bread. Our hearts burn within us as the hope of the resurrection is proclaimed in our midst, and as Jesus appears to us at the holy table. Please stand for the Gospel Acclamation. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION LUKE 24:13-35 P: The Gospel according to Luke, the 24 th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, What are you discussing with each other while you walk along? They stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days? 19 He asked them, What things? They replied, The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23 and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of 7
angels who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him. 25 Then he said to them, Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory? 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. 28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over. So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us? 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon! 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY That Easter Day with Joy was Bright ELW #384 8
RESPONSE TO THE WORD CREED P: Living together in trust and hope we confess our faith. C: We believe in God, whose love we know in the beauty of his world, in daily bread, in the kindness of human hearts, and most clearly in Jesus of Nazareth. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, whose touch of grace makes our eyes to see, our ears to hear, strengthens us to do all things in him, and delivers us from death to life. We believe in the Holy Spirit, in whose power there is peace, in whose presence there is joy, and in whose promise we dare to be more. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P: Rejoicing in the risen life of Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. A brief silence. We pray for the church. Breathe your Spirit into us. Renew us with your power. Unite us in mission and send us into the world with your love. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. 9
P: For the earth. For fields and forests, gardens and vineyards, and all newly planted crops. Sustain our world with clean water and favorable weather. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: For the nations. Empower leaders to work for the well-being of all. Send peace into every place where people live in the shadow of violence and displacement. Free all who are isolated behind walls of fear. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: For those in need. Look with compassion toward those who bear hidden wounds. Draw near to those who seek you. Comfort the dying, console the grieving, and heal the sick. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: For American Lutheran Church and the ELCA. Give us courage to welcome newcomers graciously. Walk with those who are inquiring, those who harbor doubts and questions, and those who are absent from us. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: With thanksgiving, we remember those who have died in faith. Inspire us by their witness. Bring us with them to the heavenly feast. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: Joining our voices with your faithful ones in every time and place, we offer our prayers in the name of the Risen One, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. SHARING THE PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you all. C: And also with you. P: Let us share God s peace with one another. OFFERING OFFERTORY Let the Vineyards be Fruitful Lord ELW pg
OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Merciful God, be known to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, as you were made known to the disciples. C: Receive these gifts, and the offering of our lives, that we may be your risen body in the world. Amen. MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. GREAT THANKSGIVING P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people. Do this for the remembrance of me. 11
For as often as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Now let us feast this Easter day on Christ, the bread of heaven. C: Hallelujah! COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION SENDING OF COMMUNION P: O God of tender compassion, as you healed the sick and welcomed the stranger, bless those who leave this assembly to share the gifts of this table with our sisters and brothers who are sick and homebound. May they be sustained by the love and prayers of this community, and by the Bread of life that satisfies all hunger, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION P: Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of heaven to nourish your people. C: Send us forth as witnesses to Jesus resurrection that we may show your glory to all the world; through the same Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. 12
SENDING God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world. BLESSING P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord s face shine upon you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. SENDING SONG Alleluia! Jesus is Risen! ELW #377 13

Social Issues The ELCA is a church energized by lively engagement in faith and life, a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. We encourage this kind of engagement with social concerns by providing written resources, fostering learning and encouraging action. The following is a list of social issues that will take you to resources and links related to that issue, such as relevant ELCA social documents, resources for study and education, or ways to take action in your congregation, community and the world. Hunger and poverty Through human decisions and actions, God is at work in economic life. The environment We pray, therefore, for the creativity and dedication to live more gently with the earth. Health and wellness Health care and healing are concrete manifestations of God s ongoing care for and redemption of all creation. Race, ethnicity and culture Cultural differences still matter, but they can be seen for what God intends blessings rather than means of enslavement. Our witness is a response to God's faithful love received in Word and Sacraments. The bread and the wine, the body and blood of Christ, are a sacrament of love. As love and support are given you, you in turn must render love and support to Christ in his needy ones. You must feel with sorrow all the dishonor done to Christ in his holy Word, all the misery of Christendom, all the unjust suffering of the innocent, with which the world is everywhere filled to overflowing. You must fight, work, pray, and if you cannot do more have heartfelt sympathy. From the ELCA social statement, Church in Society: A Lutheran Perspective 16
