THIRD SUNDAY RESPONSIVE LITANY: PRINCE OF PEACE A: During Advent, we wait for the one promised in scripture. C: And he will be called the Prince of Peace. A: We wait for the one who can turn discord into perfect harmony. C: And he will be called the Prince of Peace. A: We wait for the one who can replace hate with love, and anger with understanding. C: And he will be called the Prince of Peace. A: We wait for the one who can replace division with unity, and war with peace. C: And he will be called the Prince of Peace. Candle Lighting A: Today we light three candles. The first candle reminds us of our hope in knowing Jesus as our Wonderful Counselor. The second candle reminds 2

3 us of our joy in knowing a God who is powerful and almighty. We light the third candle to remind us that Jesus came to earth as the Prince of Peace. In a world filled with conflict and discord, we pray for harmony and unity as we work towards claiming the promise of peace on earth. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who comes to wake us from sleep, who leads us into the light of grace. C: Amen. God of all time, C: we confess that we have not prepared for your merciful reign among us. We ignore our neighbors in need and fail in the labor of justice and peace. In your mercy forgive us. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, 4

5 a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants will be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed. I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. L: Word of God, word of life. What do you say about yourself? 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, Make straight the way for the Lord. 24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet? 26 I baptize with water, John replied, but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 10 RESPONSE TO THE WORD APOSTLES CREED A: Living together in trust and hope we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. In this service, we recognize that not everyone feels joyful. We acknowledge our sadness and burdens, while seeking peace and comfort for our souls.
