All: We remember fallen soldiers, and the sacrifice they made for the sake of others. P: Let us begin our time of worship with a moment of thanksgiving. All: We thank God for brave men and women that have given their lives so that we may worship without fear. P: Let us begin our time of worship with a moment of silence; All: for a moment is the least we can do for those that gave their eternity. 3 All: God of every nation, as we remember those that gave their life for our sake, let us be stirred to action in their memory. We confess that we have not done all that is possible to promote peace and justice in our world. We have not loved our neighbors, let alone our enemies. For give us for failing to live up to your commandments. Empower us to work for your Kingdom in this world, and welcome us by your grace in to your Kingdom in the next. Amen P: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Faithful Deliverer, You have chosen us to receive salvation by faith, not by the works of our hands. C: Deliver us, then, from the law, and free us from the bondage of sin so that with our hands we might serve you in purity of joy and response to your goodness, for the sake of Jesus Christ, who is all goodness. 4 WORD PSALM 43 L: Psalm 43 will be read responsively by full verse. Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people; from those who are deceitful and unjust deliver me! C: 2 For you are the God in whom I take refuge; why have you cast me off? Why must I walk about mournfully because of the oppression of the enemy? L: 3 O send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. C: 4 Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God. L: 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? C: Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God. GALATIANS 3:1-9, A reading from the Apostle Paul s letter to the Galatians, the 3 rd chapter. You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly exhibited as crucified! 2 The only thing I want to learn from you is this: Did you receive the Spirit by doing the works of the law or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? Having started with the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh? 4 Did you experience so much for nothing? if it really was for nothing. 5 Well then, does God supply you with the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6 Just as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness, 7 so, you see, those who believe are the descendants of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, declared the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, All the Gentiles shall be blessed in you. 9 For this reason, those who believe are blessed with Abraham who believed. 23 Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we 4

5 are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s offspring, heirs according to the promise. 6 RESPONSE TO THE WORD Baptism of Carson Scott Myrum Born: November 7, 2016 Son of Scott and Sheila Myrum Sponsors: Brian Krueger, Holly Deutsch and Curt Myrum PRESENTATION P: In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. S: I present Carson Scott Myrum for baptism. P: As you bring Carson to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with him among God s faithful people, to bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, to teach him the Lord s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, to place in his hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer so that he: may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. P: Do you promise to help Carson grow in the Christian faith and life? S: I do. P: Do you promise to nurture Carson in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God s Spirit, and to help him live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? S: I do. P: People of God, do you promise to support Carson and pray for him in his new life in Christ? C: We do. 6

7 PROFESSION OF FAITH P: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? S: I renounce them. P: Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? S: I renounce them. P: Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? S: I renounce them. The congregation stands. P: Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Please be seated. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE P: Let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God s creation. A brief silence. P: Gracious God, we pray for the church. Keep it faithful to you, so that your people here stand in witness to proclaim how much you have done for us in Jesus Christ. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: We pray for the well-being of creation. Tend and nurture plants and animals, lands, seas, and skies. Restore the vitality of lands and waters suffering from human misuse or natural disaster. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. 7

8 P: We pray for the nations. For those who govern and all who hold authority. For those who have been displaced by warfare, economic hardship, or disaster. Bring freedom, justice, and stability to areas of conflict. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: We pray for all who suffer in body, mind, or spirit. Be with those who know demons of any kind, and clothe them with Christ s freedom and healing. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: God of water and word, we ask that you bless Carson as he is washed into your baptismal love and care. Also walk with Scott and Shelia as they faithfuly raise their children. And help us, the members of American Lutheran, live out our obligation as a church to nurture and grow Carson and Callie in their life of faith. Lord, in your mercy C: hear our prayer. P: With thanksgiving we remember those who have died, especially our loved ones and those who have given their lives in service. Inspire us by their example and bring us to your eternal home. Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. P: We lift our prayers to you, O God, trusting your promise to hear us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. Blessed be God, the source of all life, the word of salvation, the spirit of mercy. Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Carson with the gift of your Holy Spirit; the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink of this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 11 PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION P: Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of heaven to nourish your people. C: Send us forth as witnesses to Jesus resurrection that we may show your glory to all the world; through the same Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. SENDING Ecclesiasticus 44:1-15 L: A Memorial Day reading from Ecclesiasticus, the 44 th chapter. 1 Let us now sing the praises of famous men, our ancestors in their generations. 2 The Lord apportioned to them great glory, his majesty from the beginning. 3 There were those who ruled in their kingdoms, and made a name for themselves by their valor; those who gave counsel because they were intelligent; those who spoke in prophetic oracles; 4 those who led the people by their counsels and by their knowledge of the people's lore; they were wise in their words of instruction; 5 those who composed musical tunes, or put verses in writing; 6 rich men endowed with resources, living peacefully in their homes, 7 all these were honored in their generations, and were the pride of their times. 8 Some of them have left behind a name, so that others declare their praise. 9 But of others there is no memory; they have perished as though they had never existed; they have become as though they had never been born, they and their children after them. 10 But these also were godly men, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten; 11 their wealth will remain with their descendants, and their inheritance with their children's children. 12 Their descendants stand by the covenants; their children also, for their sake. 13 Their offspring will continue forever, and their glory will never be blotted out. 14 Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name lives on generation after generation. 15 The assembly declares their wisdom, and the congregation proclaims their praise. PRAYER OF REMEMBRANCE P: Eternal God, we give thanks for all those who have shown the greatest love by laying down their lives for others. We especially thank you for those in our military throughout history who have sacrificed their lives for their fellow 11

12 citizens and for us who came after. As we remember their service, keep us mindful of all those for whom this day is a burden, and send your spirit of comfort to them. Be present with all the women and men who are serving in the military today. Though they are involved with military conflicts overseas, let them live for the peace known only from you. Help us to be worthy of their legacy, and keep us mindful of their service, that in all things we may live our lives in praise and thanksgiving to you; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
