1 NEW YORK/CONNECTICUT DISTRICT A publication of The New York/Connecticut District, of the New York Annual Conference, of the United Methodist Church Marilyn McCarter, editor 34 Kelly Lane Pine Island, NY mccarte@optonline.net Rev. Elizabeth J Ott, District Superintendent Chan Gillham, Administrative Assistant P.O. Box 3007 Stamford, CT nyctdistrict@nyac-umc.com September 2015 Edition The Travelliing Preacher... A Word ffrom tthe D..S. How blessed are those who are merciful for they will be shown mercy! (Matthew 5:7 NIV) Deeply touching is the only way to describe a video that I found when scrolling through Facebook a day or so ago. The story was about five fifth grade boys, who decided to "adopt" a special needs kid who was in their class. They started by just acknowledging him - saying hello to him - letting him sit with them in the classroom. Then they began to include him in their group. They included him at lunch, joined up with him on the playground, worked on projects with him in the classroom And to their surprise, they learned from him as much as he learned from them. He was not only a sports enthusiast, he was an expert on all things to do with team sports. He kept notebooks on every college and major league team and knew their wins, losses, best players, coaches...all carefully recorded in notebooks labeled baseball, football, hockey, and basketball. He quickly became the group expert - the "go to guy" for all kinds of information to do with sports. When interviewed, the five boys said they just didn't like the way this classmate was being treated and didn't believe that it was right to exclude him because he was different. The teacher of the class said that she wished every class had boys like them and that school and life would be incredibly different if that were so. The single mother of the special needs child said that these boys had transformed her son's life. Instead of hating school and being afraid to go out on the playground or to the cafeteria because no one would talk to him, he now lived for school. He was physically stronger and more active, and even had a new basketball hoop in the driveway and friends who came over to play! As his strength, coordination and balance improved, his school work was improving too, dramatically, and Continued next page

2 The Traveling Preacher continued... he had dreams and hopes and plans for his life for the first time ever. In the final segment of the video the five boys shared that when they discovered their "sports nuts" friend didn't have a video game player, they got together and found a way to buy one for him. Not because they pitied him but because they wanted him to have it since he would enjoy it so much. My understanding is that pity comes from a place of superiority toward those in need of help. A king in ancient times might feel pity for those who stood outside the gates of the city and begged for bread. These were in the times when royalty and the wealthy might throw a few coins at the poor as they rode by. That's pity but it clearly isn't mercy. Mercy is rooted in compassion or empathy, which essentially means to have the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. How could a person of great privilege be expected to have empathy for the poor? How would they understand their situation on a "gut level" and know not only what it means to be hungry but how it feels to be forced to beg for daily food? Pity won't get you to that place of understanding but mercy breaks down the barriers between haves and have- nots, banishing differences and uniting people in common understanding that we're all beloved in God's eyes. Jesus, preaching to the people in the Sermon on the Plain, offered a lesson we call the "beatitudes" or the blessings. Blessed are those who..., he said. And people were amazed at his teaching because it was the first time they had ever heard anyone say that those who were merciful were "blessed". Mercy was an unfamiliar concept in the ancient world. Pity was known, but mercy was rare then, just as it's rare now. The news is full of stories about the merciless ways we treat one another; the prejudice, hatred, sexism, racism, culturalism, and all other "isms" demonstrate how easily we divide ourselves into categories that keep us from connecting with one another in any meaningful way. We may pity one another across our divides but we need relationships with one another to experience compassion and mercy for one another. Five fifth grade boys understand this reality. They could have pitied their classmate and done a few things that might have made them feel better about themselves. They could have "thrown a few coins in his direction" and gone on with their lives. Instead, they were merciful and got to know him, entered into his life and invited him into theirs. Mercy changed his life. Mercy changed their lives. None of those boys will ever be the same again because mercy is transformative. Pity is not. How humbling it is that the church of Jesus Christ has to follow the example of schoolboys in modeling what it is to express mercy! But I am reminded that Jesus taught his disciples this truth when he said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven." (Matthew 18:3) This summer many of us are asking, how will we combat racial violence in our nation? How will we stand up to discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, financial means, ability, country of birth? So far, even our national Presidential election dialogue is focused on who is included and who is not. This isn't a matter of political party, it's about whether or not we will be a nation of liberty and justice for all - or a nation of insiders and outsiders. It is time for the people of God to live out the merciful blessedness that Jesus taught. Mercy means getting to know those who are not accepted, not welcomed, not invited in. The example is right there in the fifth grade NY/CT Connector September 2015 Continued next page 2

3 The Traveling Preacher continued... classroom where five young boys changed everything for themselves and for the boy they now know as their friend. If we do that in our churches, in workplace, our schools, our communities - imagine what would happen there! So, are we individually and as congregations living into the teaching of Jesus to be merciful? Are we getting to know our neighbors, those who visit our churches, those who live on the outside edge of the community, those who stand at the gates of our society and ask for help? Our hope is in how we treat one another, how welcoming we are, how we offer to invite all who come into the fellowship of Jesus Christ. And so we can begin this fall season by asking: - How do we welcome guests to our church? Do we speak to people who visit or not? - Does a visitor feel welcome at our coffee hour or do they stand alone while we catch up with friends we could call or visit later? Do we judge our guests by standards that welcome some and exclude others? - How welcoming are we to people outside our doors who don't attend our church? - Are we resistant to welcoming those who look different, speak another language, or have special needs? - Is our mission about throwing coins - or is it about living as those who know God's mercy and offer mercy to others while changing lives, including our own? Have a great new beginning this fall and may God's blessings for the merciful be yours and your neighbors! Blessings, Betsy The New York Annual Conference through the grace of God embodies a beloved community of hope, building up a healthy Body of Christ, with heart-warmed United Methodists in mission for the transformation of the world. 8 New Grants for Parish Development The mission of the NYAC Parish Development Committee is to serve the churches of the conference by making loans and grants throughout the year. The funds assist churches with facility improvements, empower them to begin new ministries or continue fruitful existing ministries, as they seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ. The committee is making available two new opportunities with the district capital grant and ministry needs grant. Both programs presume a matching grant from the church applying for the funding. Details for both these new grants can be found on the conference web site at NY/CT: Co-Chairs: Michael Barry (Michael.Barry@nyac-umc.com), Julia Weidemann Winward (Julia.Winward@nyac-umc.com) Get your customized door hangers now! om/prodlist.cfm?catid =578 NY/CT Connector September
