Praise the Lord, O my soul. 8 The Lord openeth the eyes of the blind: the Lord raiseth them that are bowed down: the Lord loveth the righteous: 1 I will praise thee with my whole heart: 2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. 3 In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul. 4 All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord, when they hear the words of thy mouth. 5 Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: for great is the glory of the Lord. 8 The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: ONE: Soul is limitless, infinite. 2 1 1 Leviticus 26:1 I am, 11, 12 1 I am the Lord your God. 11 And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. 2 Psalms 84:1, 11 1 How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts! 11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. 3 I Kings 8:27 will (to ;) 27 will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; 4 Acts 17:24, 25, 28 (to ;) 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; God, not a body, defines who I am, so I m just going to think about reflecting Soul tonight. That s more important than worrying about how other people, even my friends, think I look :11 12 God is infinite, the only Life, substance, Spirit, or 12 Soul, the only intelligence of the universe, including man : The Science of being shows it to be impossible for infinite Spirit or Soul to be in a finite body or for man to have an intelligence separate from his Maker. 21 There is no finite soul nor spirit :21 (only) 4 467:17 23 Science reveals Spirit, Soul, as not in the body, and 18 God as not in man but as reflected by man. The greater cannot be in the lesser. The belief that the Soul not congreater can be in the lesser is an error that fined in body 21 works ill. This is a leading point in the Science of Soul, that Principle is not in its idea. Spirit, Soul, is not confined in man, and is never in matter :18 Nothing 18 Noth- Soul and ing but Spirit, Soul, can evolve Life, for Spirit Spirit one is more than all else. Because Soul is immortal, it does 21 not exist in mortality. Soul must be incorporeal to be Spirit, for Spirit is not finite. Only by losing the false sense of Soul can we gain the eternal unfolding of Life as 24 immortality brought to light. The shield referred to in this passage is a small type of shield that was often strapped to the left arm to help protect the wearer during hand-to-hand combat. How is God a sun and shield in your life? IS A TABERNACLE the same thing as a temple? In the Bible, the Tabernacle was a tent-like structure set up by Moses as a sacred place to worship God. It could also be transported to wherever the Israelites traveled. Later, under King Solomon s reign, the Temple was constructed in Jerusalem as a more permanent place to worship. Both the Tabernacle and the Temple also housed the tablets of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 25:22; I Kings 8:3 9). abhor: despise; reject; cast away amiable: pleasant; lovely; beloved finite: limited; bounded SOUL AND BODY 2

3 2 5 Psalms 139:1, O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 6 Romans 8:5 they, 9 (to 1 st.) 5 they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. 7 I Corinthians 6:19 know, 20 glorify 19 know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God s. 9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.... Romans 8:9 New International Version It s so great you came! We ve never seen you have so much fun at a dance before! What do we learn about our true individuality when we turn to Soul? I stopped being self-conscious about how I looked when I started seeing all of us as expressions of Soul! 595:7 9 (to ;) TEMPLE. Body; the idea of Life, substance, and intelligence; the superstructure of Truth; the shrine of 9 Love; 7 477:6, Man is not a material habitation for Soul; he is himself spiritual. Soul, being Spirit, is seen in nothing imperfect nor material. Question. What are body and Soul? Answer. Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the re- 21 flection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love. Soul is the substance, Life, and intelli- gence of man, which is individualized, but not 24 in matter. Soul can never reflect anything inferior to Spirit. Man is the expression of Soul. Reflection of Spirit 8 280:25 30 Rightly understood, instead of possessing a sentient material form, man has a sensationless body; and God, 27 the Soul of man and of all existence, being perpetual in His own individuality, harmony, Sensationless body and immortality, imparts and perpetuates these qualities 30 in man, through Mind, not matter :16 20 The material body, which you call me, is mortal mind, and this mind is material in sensation, even as the body, 18 which has originated from this material sense and been developed according to it, is material. The so-called physical ego :16 20 The individuality of man is no less tangible because it is spiritual and because his life is not at the mercy of 18 matter. The understanding of his spiritual individuality makes man more real, more formidable in truth, and enables him to conquer sin, disease, and death :21 21 Man and woman as coexistent and eternal with God forever reflect, in glorified quality, the infinite Father-Mother God. fearfully: admirably; honorably; awe-inspiringly shrine: sacred or holy place for worship multifarious: various and diverse perpetual: endless; everlasting; unceasing tangible: substantial; evident; capable of being realized and understood formidable: impressive; tending to inspire awe SOUL AND BODY 3

Manhood is its eternal noon, undimmed by a declining sun. 9 Psalms 90:17 17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. 10 Isaiah 40: Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. 29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. 11 Joshua 14:6, 7, 8 I wholly, 10 2 nd and now, 11 (to :) 6 Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh barnea. 7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh barnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart. 8 I wholly followed the Lord my God. 10 and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: 12 Psalms 89:15, 17 (to :) 15 Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance. 17 For thou art the glory of their strength: Undesirable records Except for the error of meas- 21 uring and limiting all that is good and beautiful, man would enjoy more than threescore years and ten and still maintain his vigor, freshness, and promise. Man, 24 governed by immortal Mind, is always beautiful and grand. Each succeeding year unfolds wisdom, beauty, and holiness :5 Men and women of riper 6 years and larger lessons ought to ripen into health and immortality, instead of lapsing into darkness or gloom. Immortal Mind feeds the body with supernal 9 freshness and fairness, supplying it with beautiful images of thought and destroying the woes of sense which each day brings to a nearer tomb. Love s endowment :25 1 A A material body only expresses a material and mortal mind. A mortal 27 man possesses this body, and he makes it harmonious or discordant according to the Sickness as only thought images of thought impressed upon it. You embrace 30 your body in your thought, and you should delineate upon it thoughts of health, not of sickness. You should banish all thoughts of disease and sin and of other beliefs 1 included in matter :13 15, 31 Immortality, exempt from age or decay, has a glory of its 15 own, the radiance of Soul. Eternal beauty The recipe for beauty is to have less illusion and more Soul, to retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure 1 in the body into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony. AFTER THE ISRAELITES ENTERED the Promised Land, they began to divide up the area for each of the tribes. At this point, Caleb reminded Joshua that God had guaranteed him certain land, as Moses had said (see Numbers 14:24 and Deuteronomy 1:36). fourscore: eighty countenance: face; presence threescore: sixty promise: potential; expectation of future accomplishments supernal: heavenly; divine delineate: portray; trace; sketch Joyful sound comes from a Hebrew word that can mean either a battle cry or the sound made by people shouting as they rejoice. 5 4 13 Isaiah 42:1 (to :) 16 1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: 14 Matthew 4:17 Jesus 17 Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 15 Matthew 6:22, The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 16 Psalms 18:28 the, the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. 32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. 72:9 12 As 9 As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so (in absolute Science) Soul, or God, 12 is the only truth-giver to man. Spirits obsolete :24 Divine 24 Divine Truth must be known by its effects on the body as well as on the mind, before the Science of being can be demon- The divine 27 strated. Hence its embodiment in the incar- life-link nate Jesus, that life-link forming the connection through which the real reaches the unreal, Soul rebukes sense, and 30 Truth destroys error :14 Christian Science demonstrates that none but 15 the pure in heart can see God, as the gospel Purity the teaches. In proportion to his purity is man path to perfection perfect; and perfection is the order of celestial 18 being which demonstrates Life in Christ, Life s spiritual ideal. As it relates to the eye, it also can mean good and able to fulfill its duty. elect: chosen one girdeth: encompasses; equips; clothes incarnate: having a human form celestial: spiritual; heavenly veritable: true; real; actual : Mortals must follow Jesus sayings and his demonstrations, which dominate the flesh. Man is the presence idea of Spirit; he reflects the beatific presence, illuming the universe with light. Man is deathless, spiritual. He 30 is above sin or frailty :22 26 The sinless joy, the perfect harmony and immortality of Life, possessing unlimited divine beauty and goodness 24 without a single bodily pleasure or pain, constitutes the only veritable, indestructible Immaterial pleasure man, whose being is spiritual. While a pinhole camera inverts an image, how does a spiritual perspective focus our thinking on the pure and upright nature of man? SOUL AND BODY 5

6 5 17 Psalms 141:8 mine 8 mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute. 18 Psalms 119: The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. 19 Luke 4:14 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 20 Luke 18: And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging: 36 And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant. 37 And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. 38 And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. 39 And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou son of David, have mercy on me. 40 And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him, 41 Saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight. 42 And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee. 43 And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God. What does Soul allow you to see that the material senses aren t able to show you? 21 85:2 It is the illumination of 3 the spiritual understanding which demonstrates the capacity of Soul, not of material sense. This Soul-sense comes to the human mind when the latter yields to the 6 divine Mind :11 16 Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever 12 manifested through man, the Master healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the lame, thus bringing to light the scientific action of the 15 divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving a better understanding of Soul and salvation :23 26 Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are 24 eternal. They cannot be lost. Their reality and immor- tality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter, hence their permanence. Permanent sensibility :6 Exercise of Mindfaculties 6 There is more Christianity in seeing and hearing spiritually than materially. There is more Science in the perpetual 9 exercise of the Mind-faculties than in their loss. Lost they cannot be, while Mind remains. The apprehension of this gave sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf cen- 12 turies ago, and it will repeat the wonder : Science reveals the glorious possibilities of immortal man, forever unlimited by the mortal senses. destitute: empty; in need; lacking illumination: act of supplying with light; inspiration attributes: qualities apprehension: understanding; conception; comprehension SOUL AND BODY 6

7 6 21 Psalms 86:4, 11 (to :) 4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. 11 Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: 22 II Corinthians 3:17 where 17 where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty :19 As the individual ideal of Truth, Christ Jesus came to rebuke rabbinical error and all sin, sickness, and death, 21 to point out the way of Truth and Life. This ideal was demonstrated throughout the whole Rebukes helpful earthly career of Jesus, showing the difference between 24 the offspring of Soul and of material sense, of Truth and of error. 23 Romans 12:1, 2 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 24 Matthew 15: And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there. 30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus feet; and he healed them: 31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel. 2 Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect. Romans 12:2 Good News Translation beseech: beg; earnestly request; encourage maimed: injured; disabled rabbinical: related to the teachings of the rabbis (Jewish religious teachers) mutations: changes; alterations ambiguities: uncertainties; concepts not clearly defined... where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. II Corinthians 3: :14 16 (to 2 nd.), 24 Discerning the rights of man, we cannot fail to fore- 15 see the doom of all oppression. Slavery is not the legitimate state of man. God made man free. Standard of liberty 24 Citizens of the world, accept the glorious liberty of the children of God, and be free! This is your divine right. The illusion of material sense, not 27 divine law, has bound you, entangled your free limbs, crippled your capacities, enfeebled your body, and defaced the tablet of your being :2, 24 Look away from the body into Truth and Love, Thoughts 3 the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and are things immortality. Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these 6 into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts. Immutable identity of man 24 Breaking away from the mutations of time and sense, you will neither lose the solid objects and ends of life nor your own iden- 27 tity. Fixing your gaze on the realities supernal, you will rise to the spiritual consciousness of being, even as the bird which has burst from the egg and preens its wings for a 30 skyward flight :6 6 Denial of the claims of matter is a great step towards the joys of Spirit, towards human freedom and the final triumph over the body :23 27 Christian Science explains all cause and effect as men- 24 tal, not physical. It lifts the veil of mystery from Soul and body. It shows the scientific relation of man Causation to God, disentangles the interlaced ambiguities mental 27 of being, and sets free the imprisoned thought. 9 BY MARK Lessons from competitive running DURING MY YEARS IN HIGH SCHOOL I GREW to enjoy running so much that toward the end of my senior year, even though I wasn t the best runner on our team, I was among the better middledistance runners in the state in the division in which my school competed. Underpinning my budding athletic career was a study and prayer routine I had launched at the start of my freshman year. I began considering how the truths I was learning in a Christian Science Sunday School shed new light on my studies and athletics. Using a Bible Concordance, I selected passages from the Bible that related to running and looked potentially helpful, wrote them down on index cards, and carried them with me to each cross-country and track meet I participated in. Before each race, I would separate myself from the other runners to pray to listen for what God was communicating to me, and to affirm that it was God s presence, strength, and glory in which, with which, and for which I was running. It was God s presence, strength, and glory in which, with which, and for which I was running. On many occasions, I asked a Christian Science practitioner to prayerfully support me during my meets, and Mary Baker Eddy s statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action (p. 454), was a constant source of inspiration. This interest in running continued throughout college. At the start of the outdoor track season of my junior year, I committed myself to training twice a day in an effort to further lower my times and possibly improve, or even win, in the conference championships or set a school record. But despite the extra effort, I showed only modest improvement, felt sore or hurt much of the time, and didn t obtain the hoped-for goals. I continued to pray, quietly listening for divine inspiration that would shift my focus and make my running more God-centered, and what unfolded was genuinely helpful, beautiful, and strengthening. Prior to my senior year, four significant goals came to thought, none of which depended on my running a specific time, earning a certain place in a race, or setting a record. One: I would work hard when I needed to work hard. Two: I would rest when I needed to rest. Three: I would be grateful to God for the opportunity to run, for the freedom I felt, and for the beautiful scenery that surrounded me as I trained. Four: I would be grateful to God for those whom I ran with, rather than against, including not only my teammates and coaches, but also those from other schools. In addition, I continued a practice that came to my thought earlier in collegiate running. Before races, instead of saying, good luck to fellow participants, I would say do well, because I felt that, spiritually speaking, each of us is resourced by our Father-Mother, God, and our efforts are not merely human. We had divine support. Soon I felt renewed and filled with hope. During the cross-country season, I won two races my first victories in that sport and went on to qualify for the national championships. Then, in the indoor track season, I set two school records. Eventually we reached the two-day conference championships at the end of the season. Our head coach told me I needed to run the mile, but said I could choose my second event. I asked him for an hour to consider his offer, feeling that I really needed to ask God for guidance. As I prayed, I reasoned that our Father-Mother doesn t favor one of His children over another. He doesn t pigeonhole us, selecting only a chosen few for the A-grade. He is only good, and His infinite abundance is manifested in the spiritual nature of each of us. Rightly understood, we are His spiritual reflection, and are therefore free from the ignorances that would limit us to a merely material perspective on life. As I jogged that day, I resolved not to let the false goal of personal glory deter me from being rightly motivated. I considered the four goals that had come to me the preced- SOUL AND BODY 9

10 ing summer, none of which was dependent on any specific place gained as to whether or not I would call the season successful. Up to this point, I had kept those goals intact, and in this last meet of my indoor collegiate career, I wasn t going to change my motivation, which remained to glorify God. I chose the two-mile, even though I had run it only once during the season. I reasoned that because it was the longest race, I would have the most time to enjoy it more time to spend with God. With complete peace of mind, I told my coach what I d decided. He questioned my choice, but didn t ask me to change it. Our school was hosting the championships, so I felt free to go up to our locker room and write one of my favorite quotes from the Bible on the blackboard there. It was Isaiah 40:31, which describes how God strengthens our endeavors. Little did I know that over the next several days a lot of information lane assignments, heats, splits, messages would be added around that quote. Although I didn t fully realize it at that time, what has subsequently become clear to me is that the work we do well now is what prepares and enables us for future successes. It s so important for us to always act up to our highest understanding of God s requirements, and rest assured that He is guiding us right now. This moment, well handled, gives us the confidence to meet the test of future moments, firmly supported by our loving Father. On the Friday afternoon of the preliminaries, I qualified for the finals in both the mile and the two-mile, setting personal records in both races. The next afternoon, after a few laps of physical and mental warm-up, I went with quiet confidence to the start of the mile. In a lively, close race, I won in a photo-finish, improving on my best time from the previous day. I was truly grateful for the experience, and especially for the keen, fair competition with the other runners. That sense of gratitude carried over to the two-mile event, which came later. With about 300 yards left in the race, and running second, though well behind the leader, I was passed by another runner. Instantly, I responded mentally: I will not feel sorry for myself. I know why I chose this race. All sense of fatigue dropped away, and I began to sprint. I passed the runner who had just passed me and continued fast and strong until the end, overtaking the leader near the finish. Each of my four goals for the season had been fulfilled! When I returned to our locker room after the meet, nothing remained on the blackboard except the words from Isaiah I had written there two days earlier. Whenever I think of that experience, I am grateful to God for His unfailing support: They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (Isaiah 40:31).
