3 In June of this year Bishop DiMarzio sent each parish a letter. The contents of the letter were really very clear and simple: we need to reconsider our Sunday Mass schedules. The majority of our parish churches celebrate Sunday Eucharist with congregations that fill only about half of the sacred space. Is it possible to reconsider how we celebrate? We have all had a chance to read Bishop s letter. So in the best tradition of the social sciences, I conducted an informal, non-scientific poll to discover what parishioners thought. Here is the predominant result: parishioners said, I go to (fill in the time slot) Mass and I will go wherever there is a (fill in the time slot) Mass. This response raises so many issues; however, the really important issues are two: where have all the Catholics gone? And where have all the priests to celebrate Mass gone? This leads us very nicely to this weeks dedication as National Vocation Awareness Week. National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to ordained ministry and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. Observance of Vocation Awareness Week began in 1976 when the U.S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for the celebration. It was later moved to Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in January. In 2014, after extensive consultation, the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations moved the observance of National Vocation Awareness Week to November to engage Catholic schools and colleges more effectively in this effort. So what does a person considering a vocation to the priesthood or religious life look like? Since 2009, the majority of women s and men s communities have at least one person in initial formation: 66% of women s institutes, 80% of men s institutes, 93% of all religious institutes have had at least one serious inquirer, and 79% of all religious institutes have had at least one formal applicant since So what are some of the characteristics of these candidates for the service of God and the church? The average age a person first considers a vocation to religious life is 19 years of age, fluctuating between years of age. Half are 18 or younger when they first considered a vocation. They are young men and women. The average age of entrance to religious life is 30. Additionally, almost half are 25 years old or younger. The average age of women and men making perpetual profession is 39 years old. The majority of those professing final vows are under age 39. In the Profession Class of 2016, only 5 percent were over the age of 60. Religious institutes that sponsor vocation promotion and vocation discernment programs directed toward college students and young adults are more likely to have new members than those who do not sponsor programs for these age groups. Men and women entering religious life are well educated and have worked or begun a career before entering a religious congregation. The profile for those entering diocesan seminaries is a little different. The average age of potential ordinands is 24 years old with the majority being ordained under age 35. In the Ordination Class of 2016, only 3 percent were over the age of 60. Yet in all of this there is one interesting fact: entrants lack familial support. Whereas in the past, religious and priests had family support, now they are influenced by a sense of call, example, and encouragement of others. Only 27% of mothers and 18% of fathers encouraged their son or daughter to consider a vocation to religious life prior to entering. Potential ordinands received slightly more encouragement with 42% of mothers and 38% of fathers encouraging potential ordinands to consider priesthood before entering the seminary. Families have misconceptions and worries about vocations, such as concerns that their child/sibling may be lonely, overworked, or unable to be with family. As the Domestic Church we are all called to pray for vocations. Although Catholics do not typically see it as their role to encourage vocations, women and men are nearly twice as likely to consider a vocation when encouraged by another person. People who are encouraged by three persons are five times more likely to consider a vocation than someone who was not encouraged by anyone. We all need to pray and support Vocations in the Church.

4 Saint Martin of Tours was born in in Savaria, Pannonia in either the year 316 or 336 AD. Just before Martin was born, Christianity was legalized in the Roman Empire and the bloody persecution of Christians soon came to an end. It was not the official religion of the State, but it could be practiced and proclaimed openly. The Gospel message soon flourished in ancient Rome, transforming the empire. Martin's parents were pagans, but at the age of 10, Martin chose to respond to the call of the Gospel becoming a Christian. As a young soldier, Martin encountered a beggar in Amiens. The beggar was unclothed and it was very cold. Martin removed his cloak and with his sword, he cut it in half. He gave this half to the beggar and dressed himself in the remnant. That night, Martin had a vision in which Christ appeared to him. The vision spoke to him, "Martin, a mere catechumen has clothed me." A catechumen is one who is being instructed in the Christian faith. In the early centuries of Christianity, that was a long process of instruction - and Martin was deeply dedicated to it. About the age of 20, Martin made clear to his superiors that he would no longer fight, following his formed Christian conscience. After bringing his mother to the Church, Martin then turned to confronting a growing heresy which was afflicting the faithful and sowing confusion. Martin's teacher Hilary returned to Tours from temporary exile in 361 so Martin traveled there to work and study. Hilary gave Martin a small grant of land where he and his disciples lived. Martin established a monastery which would be inhabited by the Benedictines. In 371, the city of Tours needed a new bishop and the people decided to call Martin to the office. As a bishop, Martin established a system of parishes to manage his diocese. He made a point to visit each parish at least once per year. Martin died in Gaul in National Vocation Awareness Week Did you know that in our country, compared to 50 years ago, there are 20,000 fewer priests and 130,000 fewer religious sisters? At the same time, the Catholic population has continued to grow steadily. Many factors have contributed to the decline: growing secularism, a lengthened period of adolescence, attitudes about celibacy, etc. During Vocation Awareness week, please pray that young people in today s society will hear and respond to God s call. And do your part to encourage them to consider the priesthood and religious life. St. Fidelis Food Pantry is asking for donations of nonperishable food items. Please bring all donations of food to the vestibule of the church and place them in the food pantry basket. Thank you for your generosity in a time of need Situated south of the city of Poitiers, the Abbey of Ligugé has twenty monks who live faithfully by the rule of Saint Benedict. The historical heritage of this monastery is extraordinary with Saint Martin settling here in 361 at the request of the bishop Saint Hilaire de Poitiers. It would have been after the episode of the shared coat in Amiens, but before becoming bishop of Tours where he entered into the glory of God. The Benedictine brothers share their times of prayer, fraternal living, study and manual labor. A museum of the monastic life is here as well, presenting the monastic life from the 4th century to today with objects and photographs THE MVP S AND VIP S New Members Always Welcome!! Holy Trinity has always been a most welcoming Parish to my family. We have been Parishioner s Corner worshiping here since my wife Giselle and I moved into the neighborhood 17 years ago. I have served as a catechist for the last several years. Catechesis is a challenging call to answer, but doing so has made my faith stronger. Together with our children, Christopher and Eva, and under the pastoral care of Fr. Joe and the direction of Ms. Donna, we humbly strive to continue to grow in the grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Desires, feelings, emotions, what the ancients called the passions, all have an impor tant place in married life. They are awakened whenever another becomes present and part of a person s life. It is characteristic of all living beings to reach out to other things, and this tendency always has basic affective signs: pleasure or pain, joy or sadness, tenderness or fear. They ground the most elementary psychological activity. Human beings live on this earth, and all that they do and seek is fraught with passion As true man, Jesus showed his emotions. He was hurt by the rejection of Jerusalem (cf. Mt 23:27) and this moved him to tears (cf. Lk 19:41). He was also deeply moved by the sufferings of others (cf. Mk 6:34). He felt deeply their grief (cf. Jn 11:33), and he wept at the death of a friend. These examples of his sensitivity showed how much his human heart was open to others Experiencing an emotion is not, in itself, morally good or evil.140 The stirring of desire or repugnance is neither sinful nor blameworthy. What is morally good or evil is what we do on the basis of, or under the influence of, a given passion. But when passions are aroused or sought, and as a result we perform evil acts, the evil lies in the decision to fuel them and in the evil acts that result. Along the same lines, my being attracted to someone is not automatically good. If my attraction to that person makes me try to dominate him or her, then my feeling only serves my selfishness. To believe that we are good simply because we feel good is a tremendous illusion. There are those who feel themselves capable of great love only because they have a great need for affection, yet they prove incapable of the effort needed to bring happiness to others. They remain caught up in their own needs and desires. In such cases, emotions distract from the highest values and conceal a self-centredness that makes it impossible to develop a healthy and happy family life.

7 The 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal, Live in Faith Give in Love, reminds us that the work of the Church is shared by all believers in response to the gifts of faith and love. In Holy Trinity parishioners participated in the Appeal! To date, 174 parishioners (12.62%) have responded to the 2017 Appeal. Our goal is $54,035. As of November 2, we have pledged $49,420 with $49,541 received. This represents 91.68% received. Last year, your generosity exceeded our goal and allowed us to place the returned money into our Renovation Fund. The entire staff asks you to pray and consider if you have the faith, trust, and courage in our Diocese to respond again this year. We realize the sacrifice that this entail; many still respond to the Generations of Faith Appeal. We thank you for your time, talent, and treasure in service of the Church. ACA $54,035 $50,970 God our Creator, Giver of all good gifts, We praise and glorify you. Teach us to acknowledge always, And with enduring gratitude, The many blessings your infinite love has showered upon us. Widen our vision and enliven our generosity, as we seek to support the pastoral and charitable works of our diocese in Brooklyn and Queens. All loving Father, Fountain of Mercy, We honor and adore you. Open our hearts to welcome the Holy Spirit, Who enables us to live in faith and give in love., So that the joy of the Gospel may penetrate every heart in our local communities. Open our eyes and stir up in us your compassion, So that all may come to know your Son, Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, Now and forever. Amen
