2 PAGE 2 March 16, 2015 A Journey of Faith New Life and New Power Easter is the time of new life. It fits perfectly into the new life of springtime all around us. We have come through the season of Lent, when we spent six weeks exploring the question: What does the Lord require of us? We talked about the answer which Micah gives us, Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. (Micah 6:8) It seemed simple at first, but when we unpacked it, we realized it requires more than a new attitude, it requires a new way of life. We are going to need to die to the ways of life that encourage selfishness and greed. That is really the story of Holy Week. Jesus comes to Jerusalem to teach about love of God and neighbor. We all know the story of his arrest, trial, and crucifixion. On Good Friday it seems as though everything he has said and done has come to naught. Jesus is dead, the disciples are scattered, and it seems as though might has overcome the Gospel. Easter morning changes all of that. Jesus resurrection gives new meaning to life. It isn t just about the resurrection of the dead it is about the transformation of all people. Easter is the sign of God s intervention in our world. Love, peace and the Good News of Jesus Christ have overcome might. The Spirit of God has brought life where there was death. The same Spirit blows on us today. Changing us from who we used to be, to who God has called us to be. We can be the people who Micah envisioned. We can do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God. Peace to you and yours during this season of celebration! Pastor Ed Joys and Concerns We hold in our thoughts and prayers those with health concerns, including: Roger Acton; Barbara Backstrom; Lois DeSantis; Duane Dull s sister, Amy Filipczak; Ginger and Grant Gilderhus; Ginger Gilderhus daughter, Jennifer; Bruce Kramer; Perry Leenders father and Christina Leenders mother; Nancy and Deane Manolis; Barry McCool; Mike Meland; Steve Schultz s mother; Carol Smith; and Evelyn Hyams, who is in hospice. We remember the family of Terry and Davie Griffing following the death of Terry s sister, Shannon Osborne, in Georgia. We remember Dennis Jewett, former Minister of Music, following the death of his father.his mother is also in hospice care. We celebrate the birth of Smith Marlow Timmer to Andy and Shannon Timmer. Lynn and Steve Timmer are his grandparents. Families Moving Forward Sunday, April 12 Sunday, April 19 Good Samaritan is part of the network of faith communities that sponsor Families Moving Forward, a program of Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative. For many years, we have opened our doors, twice a year, for 7 days to 3 4 families experiencing homelessness. Families in the FMF program typically spend about 2 months moving to a new place each week until they are able to secure permanent housing. Every day our Families Moving Forward guests are here, we will need: Volunteers to prepare dinner. Evening hosts to play or do crafts with the children. Overnight hosts to ensure guests are settled for the night. Prior to the arrival of our guests, we will need a setup crew and at the end of the week, we will need a take-down crew. It s a big commitment, and it takes a lot of volunteers but Good Sam has always met the challenge. Sign up to help on the sheets on the table in the narthex or online at good.org (type FMF in the search box). Thanks for making a difference. Lisa Nelson, Miriam Rickert and Barb Verduci, FMF CO-COORDINATORS Samaritan Concert Series Sing Unto God: Songs of Celebration & Joy Sunday, April 26, 4:30 PM Join our Masterworks choir, soloists, and professional orchestra for a presentation of Ralph Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs and other songs of praise to celebrate the joyful Eastertide season.
4 D ustice Love Kindness Walk Humbly 2015 Easter Offerings The Good Samaritan Missions Committee has selected the following projects for our 2015 Easter offerings. Please indicate the amount you would like to give to a project and place your gift in the offering plate or send it to the church office. The Missions Committee wishes you a Happy Easter and thanks you for your generosity. Compatible Technology International (CTI) (International Outreach) Founded in 1981, CTI is a nonprofit organization that designs practical food and water tools that help farmers in developing countries use local resources to resolve their food problems. Small farmers in rural communities make up about 75 percent of the global poor. CTI empowers these farmers, many of whom are women, with affordable tools that improve their water quality, food production, and incomes. In 2014, CTI impacted 79,000 lives with water chlorinator tools and services that raised incomes, boosted food production, improved health and nutrition, and empowered communities. To read more about CTI s accomplishments, you can refer to their 2014 Annual Report using the link on their website. Emma Norton Services (ENS) (Local Outreach) ENS helps combat poverty in our communities by providing housing at two locations: Emma Norton Residence in St. Paul and Emma s Place in Maplewood. Both locations also provide support services and basic needs to women, children, and families with homelessness, mental illness, and chemical dependency issues. In 2013, Emma Norton Residence served 122 residents, and Emma s Place served 18 families with 80 children. ENS is a national mission of the United Methodist Church. Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) (International Outreach) FMSC is a non-profit Christian organization that utilizes youth and adult volunteers to handpack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. FMSC then ships these meals to nearly 70 countries around the world. In FMSC received its ninth consecutive Charity Navigator four-star rating, placing it in the top one percent of charities for trustworthiness. Additionally, in each meal produced cost just 22 cents, and 92 percent of the total donations were spent on feeding programs. (This includes the value of volunteer labor.) Finally, in FMSC produced 191,694,144 meals. Wesley Foundation (Local Outreach) Wesley is a United Methodist-sponsored campus ministry at the University of Minnesota that welcomes all people regardless of faith. Wesley serves as a safe, stable environment for students adjusting to college life, focusing on individual spiritual development, leadership development, and social justice. The students have participated in the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), led campus-wide bone marrow drives, served meals at homeless shelters, and reached out in support to their Muslim brothers and sisters, to list just a few accomplishments. Wesley is student-led and provides weekly worship, Bible study, book study, meals, and fellowship. A former student has taken a year of employment with ASP. A present student will attend seminary next year. Good Samaritans Larry Nielsen and Dave Knutson are members of the Board of Directors. Total Name (please print)

6 PAGE 6 March 16, 2015 Capital Fund Update Dear Good Samaritans, In 2012 Good Samaritan United Methodist Church began an important three-year campaign. The results are a reason to rejoice. We raised $1,050,000 or 98% of pledges and additional gifts of $20,000!! Proceeds were used to make three-years of required loan payments of $550,000, extra principal payments of $200,000, and capital improvements to the church property including partial payments for roof repairs, a new boiler, and resurfacing the parking lots. We have enough in the checking account to make the required $182,000 of 2015 loan payments, and to make an additional extra payment on principal ($43,000 so far). The extra principal payments made in 2013 will save us about $200,000 in interest expense during the life of the mortgage and shortened the maturity by almost three years (from April 2032 to June, 2029). Additional prepayments of principal will save interest expense and shorten the maturity further. Good Samaritan currently owes about $1,800,000 on its 5.15% mortgage and its 3% loan from Metro West Builders. Thank you for your generous support of the Capital Fund since its origination in 2003 to finance the $4,500,000 construction project and subsequent church improvements! Remember that all of the money given to the capital campaign in 2015 will be used to pay down principal. Your generosity is a gift to this congregation and a witness to your faithfulness. Cordially, Ed DuBose Senior Pastor Caroline Carlin - Church Council Chair Bill Beardsley Capital Fund Treasurer
