2 PAGE 2 November 10, 2014 A Journey of Faith Rainbows. They ve been on my mind ever since I saw the most vibrant one in memory while driving the country roads of my hometown a couple weeks ago. Rainbows capture our imagination every time we see one stretching across the sky after a rainstorm. They are one of the first images our children seem to draw and color. Our elementary schools use their images in a variety of places and contexts. We sing songs about them; write poetry about them; and dedicate science classes to them. But even though science tells us rainbows are nothing more than reflections and refractions of light on water droplets in the atmosphere, they still seem to maintain a place of mystical awe and wonder in our lives and imaginations. As Christians, an image of a rainbow connects us to the famous or infamous story in our Bible of Noah and the Ark and God s promise to Noah to never flood the earth again. Seeing a rainbow in the sky is meant to remind us of that promise. Or at least, that s what most of us were taught in Sunday School. But the Noah story is a dark and complex story that as adults leaves us with more questions and uneasy feelings than a rainbow and a simple promise can appease. Joys and Concerns We hold in our thoughts and prayers those with health concerns, including: Lois DeSantis, Ginger and Grant Gilderhus; Dave Knutson; Bruce Kramer; Dick Lund; Nancy and Deane Manolis; Barry McCool; and Evelyn Hyams, who is in hospice. We are mourning the recent loss of three Good Samaritan members. Please pray for their families during this difficult time. We remember Alexandra Hagen following the death of her father, Peter Hagen, on Oct. 28. We remember the family of Carroll Sigurdson following his death on Oct. 31. We remember the family of Bonnie and Paul Gehring following the death of Paul on Nov. 2. What if, instead of our Sunday School version of the Noah story, every time we see a rainbow showing off its magnificent splendor across the sky, we think of a different passage in the Bible? A passage that connects us back to the poetic and mystical experience of our encounter with the Holy; a passage that better captures our experience of rainbows and holy promises for today: Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6 7). It was these words of Saint Paul that rang throughout my being a week and a half ago when that rainbow captured my imagination. Next time a rainbow captures your imagination, I invite you to hear this same holy promise, which is a promise of an abiding peace that transcends all thought, science, and rationale. It is a peace we experience to the very depth of our being in God. Pastor Amanda We are Good Samaritans Our Vision is: Inspiring joyful faith; Building a loving community; Serving neighbors near and far. If you have not already done so, you are invited to prayerfully consider how you can support the church and to return your pledge card to Good Samaritan soon. We have been abundantly blessed at Good Samaritan! Your generosity is appreciated. The next deadline for Samaritan articles is noon on Monday, November 17. That issue will be dated November 24. Please submit articles to rachel@good.org, mary@good.org, and marketing@good.org.

4 Advent & Christmas 2014: The Birth of the Messiah Have you ever been expecting a baby? Expecting a child to be born is one of the most exciting feelings in life. Waiting, hoping, praying, alert and anxious! Counting the days down until the baby is finally here! During the Sundays of Advent we will be exploring the Birth of the Messiah. Throughout history, the Church has used the Sundays leading up to Christmas as a time of great expectation. ( Advent comes from the Latin word that means coming. ) This Advent our Good Samaritan congregation will be talking about what it means to expect the Messiah in our own lives. In worship on Sunday mornings and in Bible Study during the week, we will unpack the meaning of the Christmas story for our lives. In December, S.T.E.P. will invite St. Louis Park families who qualify in to select Christmas presents for their children. The tree will be up and ready to go starting on Nov. 13 and all unwrapped presents should be under the tree by Wednesday, Dec. 10. Children s Council members will take the presents to STEP, but we would love additional help. Please contact Heather, heather@good.org, if you can help transport presents. Thanks for your support! My Health Speaker, Nina Jonson On Wednesday, Nov. 19, 6 7 PM, Nina Jonson will speak with parents on Learning to Speak Their Language: Texting, Social Networking and Cyber Safety. She will then meet with the W.I.L.D. Ones from 7 8 PM. The parent talk is set up to be for parents with 4th 6th graders, but all are welcome! Parents, please RSVP to Heather, heather@good.org, and see you there! Dir. of Families with Children: Heather Miller ext.226 or heather@good.org A HUGE Thank You to all of the kids, Sunday School teachers, and parents who helped to make our Sunday School Book Drive for BEST East School in Minneapolis successful! Our Good Sam kids brought in hundreds of books I honestly lost count and over $150 for the teachers to buy new books for their classrooms. This was such a successful book drive and it is all thanks to you for supporting this cause! The teachers of BEST East have an excellent start on their classroom libraries now, from Kindergarten to grade 5, and kids at the school can finally take books home to read! The teachers also offered their thanks and were overjoyed with the donation. Thanks, Good Sam kids, for making a difference! Christmas Pageant This year s Christmas Pageant will be, Live From Bethlehem! The Pageant will be performed on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 4:30 PM, followed by a spaghetti supper. Come and support our kids as they act out the Christmas story!
