1 The Magazine for Fulneck & Gomersal Moravian Churches JUNE 2015 Minister: Rev. Michael Newman The Parsonage, 38 Fulneck, Pudsey, LS28 8NT tel: Editor: Br. Christopher Shorten tel: Minister s Letter Dear all, This year we have been thinking about our Provincial Mission Statement and looking in detail at the five marks of mission. The fifth mark is that we commit ourselves to safeguard the integrity of creation, sustaining and renewing the life of the earth. That is why we will be celebrating Environment Sunday on the 7 th of June (a week later at Fulneck). Environment Sunday is the Sunday nearest to World Environment Day, which was established by the UN in 1972 and is on the 5th of June each year. At Gomersal, in our Lent Studies and in the Outreach Group we have been thinking about what we can do practically. Thanks to Sr Victoria Wright we will be collecting items in church to be recycled and to raise money for various charities through the Inner Wheel of Cleckheaton. The items are stamps, ink jet cartridges, mobile phones (remove SIM card), hearing aids (not digital), spectacles with cases, foreign currency, knitted items for children, blankets, first aid boxes and plastic crockery. The Outreach Group has also purchased a green bin to go in the kitchen so that it is easier to separate items to be recycled. At Fulneck, the Church Committee are applying for a grant to have an energy survey of the Church and Boys Brigade. I hope and pray that the services will inspire us all to play our part. There will be music, entertainment, children s activities, craft stalls, refreshments, local community groups and more. We hope to see you. 6 Heritage Open Day Saturday 12th September 2015 This year is an appropriate time to choose the life of Jan Hus as our H.O.D. theme. We will be displaying aspects of his life in Bohemia and the influence of his martyrdom 600 years ago on the development of the European Reformation. There will also be information on how he became the inspiration and forerunner of our Moravian Church in Europe and ultimately Fulneck. Br Malcolm Healey Br Malcolm Healey is being released from prison on licence on 23 rd June and will be returning to live in Pudsey. Following a meeting with his Probation Officer, the Provincial Youth and Children s Officer and the Principal of the School, an agreement has been drawn up which will facilitate Malcolm to worship at Fulneck and to receive support whilst safeguarding our children and young people. There will be some services and events that he cannot attend, and he must be accompanied at all times when in Church or in the settlement. If you have any concerns please speak to me. Br Michael Newman General Notices Yorkshire District Youth Group Sunday 21 st June, 7pm at Fulneck A treasure hunt around the settlement followed by refreshments. Meet in the Boys Brigade. HERE S HOW YOU CAN HELP WITH THE FIFTH MARK OF MISSION If you have any of the following items, please send them to Gomersal Moravian Church. Don t worry about them being in time for Environment Sunday, so long as they are received in the month of June. You will be supporting the following overseas charities: Stamps (with 1/4 inch border) for Leprosy Mission. Ink Jet Cartridges for Polio Plus Mobile Phones (remove SIM card) for Water Aid Hearing Aids (Not digital) for Sound Seekers Spectacles with cases for Zikomo Trust Foreign Currency for Leprosy Mission and LEPRA Knitted Items for babies, young children, including knitted teddies for Jacobs Well Appeal Knitted blankets, first aid boxes, plastic mugs and plates for Christian African Relief Trust Thank you for your support. I am grateful to Sr. Mary Smith for passing me the following recipe. If you are stuck for something to bake for a fundraising stall, or just fancy a treat, why not give it a go? Moravian Sugar Cake Originally made by early settlers, Moravian Sugar Cake is still a year round favourite. This is one of many old recipes. 1 pint milk 1 cup dry mashed potatoes 1 tsp salt 1 cake yeast dissolved in 1/21 cup lukewarm water Mix all ingredients and add sufficient flour to make a stiff sponge. Beat well and put in a warm place until very light. After which add: 1 or 2 eggs, well beaten 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup melted butter 1/2 cup melted lard mixed with butter Add a little more flour and work the sponge until blisters form and dough drops clean from the hand. Take some of the dough and put it into greased shallow pans and smooth out to 1/2 inch in thickness and set away to rise. When the cake is light, make holes in equal distances, filling each with a lump of butter and brown sugar. Dust over the entire cake plenty of brown sugar and a little cinnamon. Bake in moderate oven for 15 to 20 minutes. If you have a favourite recipe, story, prayer or poem that you would be willing to share, please send it to me for inclusion in a future edition of our magazine. kit@theshortens.co.uk 6
