Worship is the arena in which God calibrates our hearts, reforms our desires, and rehabituates our loves. Worship isn t just something we do; it is where God does something to us. Worship is the heart of discipleship because it is the gymnasium in which God retrains our hearts. - James K. A. Smith Finish, then, thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be: Let us see thy great salvation Perfectly restored in thee. - Charles Wesley Please turn off or silence all communication devices. 3 Worship October 28, 2018 Reformation Sunday Preparation for Worship The Greeting Leader: People: The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Call to Worship God calls His people to worship PSALM 46:1-2, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea. Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Hymn of Praise We praise our glorious God A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD HYMN 92 2

Invocation We seek the Lord s presence among us Doxology We respond in praise OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below. Praise him above, ye heav nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Call to Confession Romans 3:9-20 Confession of Sin We acknowledge our sin O God, our Father, Forgive us for our many sins. Like Adam and Eve, we are easily captivated by the objects that our eyes desire. We fall so often, and when we do, we run and hide in shame instead of running to you to confess our sin and find joy and forgiveness in the cross. You have given us your most cherished treasure, yet we sometimes prize many other things more highly than Christ. Give us the kind of heart that serves you with peaceful abandon, unconcerned about our own welfare and reputation, submissive and quiet before you. Cause us to cherish Christ above all our other desires, so that we will be satisfied in him for all eternity. In his name we pray, Amen. 3

Assurance of Forgiveness The promise of good news ROMANS 3:21-25 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. Hymn of Response We trust in Christ alone In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My Comforter, my All in All Here in the love of Christ I stand In Christ alone, who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save 'Til on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live 4

There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the power of Christ in me From life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No power of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand Till He returns or calls me home Here in the power of Christ I'll stand Words by Stuart Townend; Music by Keith Getty Copyright 2001 Kingsway s ThankYou Music Confession of Faith Westminster Larger Catechism #70 Q. What is justification? A. Justification is an act of God s free grace unto sinners, in which he pardons all their sins, accepts and accounts their persons righteous in his sight; not for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but only for the perfect obedience and full satisfaction of Christ, by God imputed to them, and received by faith alone. Offertory Prayer 5

Morning Offering We offer our gifts Children are now dismissed for KIWI (Kids in Worship Instruction) KIWI Children (4 year old-kindergarten) Room 211 KIWI Jr. (first and second grade) Room 209. Pastoral Prayer Jacob Tilton The Reading of the Word Genesis 18:22-33 (page 13 in pew Bible) The Preaching of the Word Pastor Ryan Moore THE LIFE OF ABRAHAM: THE NEED TO INTERCEDE: WHAT GRACE DOES TO US 6

The Need to Intercede: What Grace Does TO Us Genesis 18:22-33 Q. Is our record all that we have to go on? 1. The dilemma Abraham faces as he intercedes. 2. The principle Abraham learns as he intercedes. 7

Communion Prayer of Thanksgiving The Encouragement Pastor: People: Pastor: People: Pastor: People: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Words of Institution The Confession Pastor: People: Pastor: People: Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast. The gifts of God for the people of God. Statements for Communion: The body of Christ for you. The blood of Christ for you. You have new life in Christ. You have full forgiveness in Christ. (We do serve wine in the communion trays but you can also find grape juice in the center of the trays.) 8

Understanding Holy Communion For Christ our passover has also been sacrificed for us, therefore, let us celebrate the feast. 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 Because we believe the Table belongs to the Lord, it is vital that you come this morning on His terms: 1. You must be in communion with Jesus Christ by faith and repentance, trusting Him alone for your salvation. 1 Corinthians 11: You must be in communion with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Matthew 5:23-24; Ephesians 4: You must be in communion with the church (any Bible-believing church) as a baptized member in good standing. Matthew 18:15-18; Hebrews 13:17 4. Because we seriously heed Scripture's admonition in 1 Corinthians 11:28-29, We invite children who are ready to make a public profession of saving faith to complete the Communicants Class materials available at the book table, arrange a meeting with the elders, and thus become regular communicants at the Lord s Table. "But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 1 Corinthians 11:

Prayers for Those Not Communing For those searching for truth: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me the ability to follow you no matter what it might cost me. Give me an understanding for you that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the life that you promise. Amen. For those who desire to profess faith in Christ: Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead and are now representing me at the Father s right hand in heaven, I turn from my sins and receive you as my savior. Amen. A prayer for those struggling against sin: Lord Jesus, give me the ability to see in you the fulfillment of all my needs and desires, and help me to turn from every false source of satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely to me, and run with perseverance the race that you have set before me, looking only to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. A prayer for covenant children who have not yet made a profession of faith: Lord Jesus, thank you for giving me the opportunity to grow up in a Christian family where I am surrounded by the good news of the gospel. Help me to grow in my understanding of who you are and what you have done for me on the cross. Help me learn what it means for me to turn from my sins and trust in you alone for my salvation. Teach me what it means to follow you as one of your disciples. Amen. 10
