Becoming poor [in spirit] strips us of our inner divisions, including the spiritual masks we ve worn in the exhausting holiness game we ve been playing We do literally fall into wholeness and holiness when every aid we ve used to hold ourselves up is knocked out from under us. Cecil Frances Alexander Please turn off or silence all communication devices. Courtesy walker and wheelchair are available at the main entrance. 3 Worship July 31, 2016 Preparation for Worship The Greeting Leader: People: The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Call to Worship God calls His people to worship PSALM 95:17 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he make it, and his hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. 2

Invocation We seek the Lord s presence among us Doxology We respond in praise MESSENGER Praise and glory to the Father, Praise and glory to the Son, Praise and glory to the Spirit, Ever three and ever one. Confession of Sin We acknowledge our sin Most holy and merciful Father; We acknowledge and confess before You; Our sinful nature prone to evil and slow in good; And all our shortcomings and offenses. You alone know how often we have sinned; In wandering from Your ways; In wasting Your gifts; In forgetting Your love. We confess our sins against our brothers and sisters; The blindness and hardness of our hearts toward those suffering and in need; Our indifference toward justice and mercy; Our arrogance and all the evil ways of our selfishness and pride. 4
Have mercy upon us, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies blot out our sins. Create in us a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within us. Cast us not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from us. Restore unto us the joy of Your salvation; And uphold us with Your free Spirit; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Silent Confession Hymn of Dependence We wait upon the Lord Father, I Stretch My Hands to Thee Father, I stretch my hands to thee, No other help I know; If thou withdraw thyself from me, Ah! whither shall I go? What did thine only Son endure, Before I drew my breath? What pain, what labor to secure My soul from endless death! Surely Thou canst not let me die; O speak and I shall live; And here I will unwearied lie, Till Thou Thy Spirit give. Author of faith, to thee I lift My weary, longing eyes: O let me now receive that gift! My soul without it dies! Words by Charles Wesley ; Tune: MARTYRDOM, CM; Hugh Wilson,
Assurance of Forgiveness The promise of good news COLOSSIANS 2:1315 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Hymn of Thanksgiving We delight in the love of God When Love Came Down to Earth When Love came down to earth And made His home with men, The hopeless found a hope, The sinner found a friend. Not to the powerful But to the poor He came, And humble, hungry hearts Were satisfied again. What joy, what peace has come to us! What hope, what help, what love! 6
When every unclean thought, And every sinful deed Was scourged upon His back And hammered through His feet. The Innocent is cursed, The guilty are released; The punishment of God On God has brought me peace. Come lay your heavy load Down at the Master's feet; Your shame will be removed, Your joy will be complete. Come crucify your pride, And enter as a child; For those who bow down low He'll lift up to His side. Stuart Townend Copyright 2001 Thankyou Music Morning Offering We offer our gifts Children are now dismissed for KIWI (Kids in Worship Instruction) KIWI Children (4 year oldkindergarten) Room 211 KIWI Jr. (first and second grade) Room 209. Teachers will meet the children in the foyer to take them to their classrooms. 9 Pastoral Prayer Pastor Ryan Moore The Reading of the Word Psalm 51 The Preaching of the Word Pastor Ryan Moore GRACE TO CHANGE: WHY GRACE MUST BE AT THE CENTER OF HOW WE CHANGE 8
GRACE TO CHANGE: WHY GRACE MUST BE AT THE CENTER OF HOW WE CHANGE Because Jesus justifies us(we don t justify ourselves), all change in our life must reflect HIS work, for his glory. I. How Grace Does This I matter, but I m not the point. II. What David Asks For New Creation III. How David is Made Clean Blood, but not from bulls. Conclusion: As it turns out, we are not only made right (justified) by grace, but we change (are sanctified) by grace too. Singing this Psalm reminds me that Grace keeps Jesus, not myself, at the center of everything. 9
Communion Prayer of Thanksgiving The Encouragement Pastor: People: Pastor: People: Pastor: People: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Words of Institution The Confession Pastor: People: Pastor: People: Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast. The gifts of God for the people of God. Statements for Communion: The body of Christ for you. The blood of Christ for you. You have new life in Christ. You have full forgiveness in Christ. (We do serve wine in the communion trays but you can also find grape juice in the center of the trays.) 10
Understanding Holy Communion For Christ our passover has also been sacrificed for us, therefore, let us celebrate the feast. 1 Corinthians 5:78 Because we believe the Table belongs to the Lord, it is vital that you come this morning on His terms: 1. You must be in communion with Jesus Christ by faith and repentance, trusting Him alone for your salvation. 1 Corinthians 11: You must be in communion with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Matthew 5:2324; Ephesians 4: You must be in communion with the church (any Biblebelieving church) as a baptized member in good standing. Matthew 18:15 18; Hebrews 13:17 4. Because we seriously heed Scripture's admonition in 1 Corinthians 11:2829, We invite children who are ready to make a public profession of saving faith to complete the Communicants Class materials available at the book table, arrange a meeting with the elders, and thus become regular communicants at the Lord s Table. "But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 1 Corinthians 11:
Prayers for Those Not Communing For those searching for truth: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me the ability to follow you no matter what it might cost me. Give me an understanding for you that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the life that you promise. Amen. For those who desire to profess faith in Christ: Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead and are now representing me at the Father s right hand in heaven, I turn from my sins and receive you as my savior. Amen. A prayer for those struggling against sin: Lord Jesus, give me the ability to see in you the fulfillment of all my needs and desires, and help me to turn from every false source of satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely to me, and run with perseverance the race that you have set before me, looking only to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. A prayer for covenant children who have not yet made a profession of faith: Lord Jesus, thank you for giving me the opportunity to grow up in a Christian family where I am surrounded by the good news of the gospel. Help me to grow in my understanding of who you are and what you have done for me on the cross. Help me learn what it means for me to turn from my sins and trust in you alone for my salvation. Teach me what it means to follow you as one of your disciples. Amen. 12
Closing Song We respond in faith and song The Lamb Has Overcome The Lamb has overcome, the Lamb has overcome. The battle s done and the victory is won. The Lamb has overcome. No grave could hold him down, no grave could hold him down Up from the ground, He is risen! was the sound. No grave could hold him down. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain! Glory be unto His name! Worthy is the Lamb who was slain! Glory be unto His name! At God s right hand is He, at God s right hand is He. Our Perfect Plea as he lives to intercede, At God s right hand is He. The day is drawing near, the day is drawing near. He shall appear and will wipe away each tear. The day is drawing near. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain! Glory be unto His name! Worthy is the Lamb who was slain! Glory be unto His name! The Lamb has overcome, the Lamb has overcome. The battle s done and the victory is won. The Lamb has overcome. Words and music by Luke Morton 2011 Cardiphonia Music 13
The Sending The people of God are sent into the world For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 People: Thanks be to God! Ascription of Praise God blesses his people as they go Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:

Christian Education Sunday Mornings at 9am New Members Class If you re interested in becoming a member or have questions about what Presbyterians believe, this class is for you. Led by Pastor Jordan Room 205 Walking with God through Pain and Suffering Our culture today teaches us that we should avoid suffering at all costs or at least minimize it so it affects our lives as little as possible. But is this a Biblical approach? Is this how Christ calls us to live? How do other cultures understand suffering? Can suffering serve a purpose in our lives? When suffering can't be avoided what is the best way to approach it for ourselves and others? These are just a few of the many questions we will be attempting to answer in this 12week study on pain and suffering. We will begin by trying to understand suffering and our attitudes about it through cultural, philosophical, and theological lenses. Next we will look at how Christians should face suffering. And finally we will see how God walks with us through our hardest times. This study intends to lay a foundation of intellectual and theological understanding and build on it with practical application based on real experiences. Led by David Welch & Johnny Tassin Lecture Hall 16
