1 February 2015 W A Y M A N G O O D H O P E A F R I C A N M E T H O D I S T E P I S C O P A L C H U R C H News of Good Hope The Pastor s Word We praise God for this month of February as we celebrate our heritage as African Americans during this Black History Month, and remember with pride and thanksgiving, the roads we have trod! And as we praise God, we are mindful of the fact that our joy is centered not only on who we are as Black Americans, but also on who we are as African Methodists celebrating our beginnings as the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Inc., and our Founder, Richard Allen who was born on February 14 th. It is significant that we celebrate this Black History Month at a time when it appears that many of the hard-earned civil rights for Black Americans are being overturned in courtrooms and are being negated in the face of brutality against young Black men. Moreover, we are witnessing a shocking resurgence of Black-on-Black OUR FOUNDER RICHARD ALLEN Every February, A.M.E. Churches celebrate Founder s Day in honor of Richard Allen, the founder and first Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Richard Allen was born a slave on February 14, 1760 on the Benjamin Chew estate. Deeply religious from an early, age, Allen was converted at the age of 17. He began preaching in 1780 and was ordained in Through thrift and industry, he and his brother worked at night to pay for their freedom. Despite his lack of formal medical training, Allen was a noted "Bleeder", the equivalent of our present day surgeons. Dr. Benjamin Rush, a leading physician of the time and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, gave praise to Bishop Allen for his services during the Black Plague in 1793 which took the lives of thousands of Philadelphians. In 1791 Allen established what was known as the Blacksmith Shop Meeting House when he purchased an abandoned blacksmith shop forma man named Sims and moved it to a plot of ground on 6th Street between Lombard and Pine Streets. This building was dedicated as a church in 1794 by Bishop Francis A. Asbury of the Methodist Episcopal Church. crime, and a blatant lawlessness in the Black community and even among many Black elected officials. And in spite of the fact that a Black man continues in his second term as the 44 th President of the United States of America, racism is rampant, gridlock in Congress in alive and well, and hatred against minorities is real. Thus, we are called afresh and anew to a refocusing of our minds; and to a clearer understanding of the truth of our real freedom; and to a more meaningful demonstration of who we are and whose we are as people marching under the Continued on page 2 From July 1805, Allen conducted services in the "Roughcast Church". This had been the first brick church erected on American soil by people of color. The African Methodist Episcopal denomination was organized in Philadelphia in Richard Allen was consecrated as its first Bishop at the General Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 10, In 1841 the red brick church was built to replace the old roughcast one, and remained in use until the present church (dedicated in 1890) was erected in its place on the original plot of ground. Allen was an organizer of the Free African Society, a group that fostered self-help and selfdependence. He established day and night schools, and was co-organizer of the first Masonic Lodge among colored men in Pennsylvania, African Lodge 459 in Philadelphia. From 1797 to his death on March 26, 1831, Allen operated a station on the Underground Railway for escaping slaves. This work was continued by B e t h e l C h u r c h u n t i l t h e Emancipation. Bishop Allen was married to Sarah Bass Allen. He was the father of six children- Richard Jr., James, John, Peter, Sarah and Ann. Page

2 The Pastor s Word (Continued from page 1) banner of Jesus Christ! Ours is a call to love, and to commitment, and to service; and we as a people need to begin to act as though we are aware of who we are and whose we are. First, as we proudly celebrate our heritage, we should remember that this month is not only a month for celebrations of our African American heritage in this country and the great legacy of Richard Allen, this month of February is also a month when we need to remember to lift up the reality of LOVE which will empower us to become one people committed to service, one family of Believers committed to stand proudly on the shoulders of our forefathers and foremothers, and one Church committed to God s mandates to make a difference in God s world! As Christians, we understand that the love we celebrate is not just the romantic love, but the agape love which Jesus lived and taught. And, we rejoice because love empowers! Secondly, we remember that the Scriptures abound with teachings of our connectedness to God and to one another. In John 15:5 we find Jesus words, I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I stay joined to you, then you will produce lots of fruit. But you cannot do anything without me. (CEV) Not only is this our Scriptural Thought for this Conference Year, herein Jesus speaks to the promised abundance of living connected to Him. Later, Jesus tells His Disciples, This is my command: Love each other as I have loved you. (15:12). Nevertheless, even as so-called seasoned Christians, we still ask the questions: How do we stay connected to Go so that we continue to grow in grace and in love? How do we learn and even teach our children to live in Christian love and peace with one another? How do we find the courage to truly make a difference in God s world? The Season s call is for us to develop a closer connection to God as we grow in walking in the light and love of God. Thirdly, the journey begins anew this month as we enter into the 2014 Lenten Season. This is that 40-day period of introspection, sacrifice, repentance, and recommitment a time when we ask God to search us and try us, and to take away anything in us that should not be in us. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18 th. We will praise God on Sundays here at Wayman; and, then again on Wednesday evenings during Lent when we Worship with the Churches United for Christ Cluster (CUCC). Also, we will begin each Wednesday with our Lenten Season Prayer Line Call Series at 6:30 a.m. Additionally, Wayman Good Hope will embark on a special Lenten Season Spiritual Journey of Fasting, Prayer, and Study. Once again, we are calling for a Corporate Fast for the entire Wayman Good Hope Family fasting and praying during the 40 days of Lent specifically for our spiritual strengthening and for God s expanded blessings on our Church, our families, our community, our people, our nation, and our world. Finally, on Tuesday evenings and at special Saturday sessions, we will ask our members to study the Catechism of our Church so that we will learn more about who we are in Christ Jesus, and what we believe as Christians and as African Methodists. Tri-folds will be available in the Church Narthex with instructions, explanations, and schedules of Meetings for our 2014 Lenten Season Spiritual Journey. Tri-folds on the Discipline of Fasting, and Catechism Books will be available in the Church Office. Announcements will also be in the Sunday Bulletins during the Lenten Season, so that members can make a commitment to fully participate in 2014 Lenten Season Spiritual Journey. The Scriptures inform us of the benefits and the power of fasting and prayer. Moreover, from Genesis to Revelation, the Word of God reminds us that God created each of us for a purpose, and that our purpose is realized and activated through the disciplines of fasting and praying as we learn more about God through studying and making sense of God s Word. Thus, as we begin this month of February and as we embark upon this 2014 Lenten Season, let us remember God s love for us and our love for God and for one another, as we are empowered anew to commit to unity and to service. Let us celebrate our heritage and the spiritual legacy that is unique to us as people of color. Let us boldly embrace, once again, the spirit of Yes, We Can as we embark upon our 40-day Lenten Season Spiritual Journey. And let us continue to run with patience, this race that is set before us, always looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith Love, Joy, Peace, Pastor Poag-Ray How to Get Items Published in the Newsletter Submissions by (attachments) are preferred but not required. 4 The AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL Church was started in 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by a group of disinherited African Americans whose fore parents came from Africa. The leader of this group was a 27 year old African, Richard Allen. At that time, the word African was used to designate those persons whom we now call "American Blacks or African Americans. The movement to organize a church separated from the white people s church was started in response to the Africans need for opportunities for self-expression and fuller involvement in the service of the worship of God, and in society as a whole. It was the answer to a cry for social recognition as human beings, and the means through which a group of people started on a program which gave them a growing sense of dignity and self-respect. To foster this progress, Richard Allen considered it important to conduct night school classes in which his people could learn how to help themselves. Out of these night school classes has come the Church s philosophy of education with its strong emphasis upon self-help. To this day, this general emphasis has remained unchanged. In addition to the educational program of the local church, the AME Church operates eleven institutions of higher education. Most religious groups had their origin in some theological, doctrinal, ideological dispute or concern. But the A.M.E. Church originated as a protest against the inhuman treatment which the helpless people of the African descent were forced to accept from the white people belonging to the St. George Methodist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This fact says to us that the organization of the ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF THE A.M.E. CHURCH Reprinted from the Feb Newsletter A.M.E. Church was the result of racial discrimination rather than of any theological or doctrinal concern. The A.M.E. Church is a member of the family of Methodist Churches. Its founder and first active Bishop, Richard Allen, felt that no religious sect or denomination would suit the capacity of his people as well as did Methodism with its emphasis upon the plain and simple gospel which the unlearned could understand and its orderly system of rules and regulations which the underdeveloped needed. He felt that Methodism had what the African needed to encourage him to make progress, to worship God freely, and to fill every office for which he had the capability. The Africans who started the A.M.E. Church were very poor and most of them could neither read nor write. Yet, under the leadership of Richard Allen, they managed to buy an old blacksmith shop and move it to a lot at the corner of Sixth and Lombard Streets in Philadelphia, where they organized Bethel A.M.E. Church which stands today as one of the historic shrines of Philadelphia. In times, other African churches were started in Baltimore, Maryland; Salem, New Jersey; Attleboro, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, Delaware; and other places in the United States. In the year 1816, these churches came together and formed the A.M.E. Church, Inc. Richard Allen was elected to serve as the first active bishop. Today, the A.M.E. Church has 21 active bishops and more than two million members scattered through the 50 states in the United States of America, Canada, South America, Africa, England, the Caribbean, and India. OUR NAME - AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL The word African means that the church was organized by people of African descent and heritage. It does not mean that the church was founded in Africa, or that it was for persons of African descent only. The church's roots are of the family of Methodist churches. Methodism provides an orderly system of rules and regulations and places emphasis on a plain and simple gospel. Episcopal refers to the form of government under which the church operates. The chief executive and administrative officers of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination are the Bishops of the church. Motto of the A.M.E. Church "God Our Father, Christ Our Redeemer, the Holy Spirit Our Comforter, Humankind Our Family." The A.M.E. Church Symbol The Cross - The Anvil The cross symbolizes the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the power of Salvation, and God s abounding Grace. The anvil represents the blacksmith shop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where the founder, Richard Allen, with a few followers, established the first African Methodist Episcopal Church; the anvil is known as an indestructible object. It represents the enduring spirit of the founding fathers of the African American Church. And so it is with God. He cannot be worn down or broken. He is eternal. The anvil represents the beginning of the AME Church as well as the longevity and lasting strength of our Lord. Page 4

Scriptural Thought for the Conference Year Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in me and I in him shall produce a large crop of fruit. For apart from me you can t do a thing. If anyone separates from me, he is thrown away like a useless branch, withers, and is gathered into a pile with all the others and burned. But if you stay in me and obey my commands, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted! My true disciples produce bountiful harvests. This brings glory to my Father.
