1 Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost, Sept. 16, 2018 Church News and Events Welcome to New Members Laura and Lucas Boudon, Nancybeth King, Jackie Rylander, Steve Turner, and Stan Wiles, who will be received today. Please take a few minutes after the service to welcome them. The Semi-Annual Meeting of Grace congregation will be held on Sunday, September 30, at 11:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will present the proposed budget for 2019 and introduce the new Council members. There will be a single service on this day and a light lunch will be available immediately following the service. We look forward to seeing you at this time. Children and Youth Sunday School classes have resumed at 10:00 a.m. Meet in Room 210 to find your class. Fall 2018 Alpha has begun! If you'd like to explore some questions about the faith, get to know some other folks better, or are just curious, you can still come tonight at 5:15 p.m. However, please contact Nancy Munro or Pam Williams to find out how to access the first two videos shown last week so you can view them before this evening's session. They are about Jesus and are foundational. The session will end at 7:30 p.m. After tonight, the course will be closed. Come and see! The next Fellowship dinner will be this Wednesday, September 19, at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Nurturing will provide the meal. Please invite a friend and come for a time of enjoyable companionship. Prayer meeting is held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. The informal format includes scripture, time for meditation, music, and corporate and individual prayer opportunities. The next meeting is Tuesday, September 18, at 7:00 p.m., in the sanctuary. All are welcome - bring a friend! The next Pet Fest planning meeting is Wednesday, September 19, at 5:00 p.m. in Room 107. We will be starting early so folks can attend the Fellowship dinner at 6:00 p.m. All those interested in participating are invited to attend. For more information, visit the Pet Fest website, contact Phil Stumbo or Chris Parton. Fleas for Pets Suggested items for our rummage sale include sporting equipment, children and baby items, pet items in good condition, decorating items, workshop and gardening tools, toys and games, linens/towels/curtains, kitchen ware (pots, pans, bake ware, utensils, placemats), dishes, silverware, glasses, good framed artwork, jewelry and books. PLEASE, NO clothes, computers, printers, scanners, DVDs, old TVs, VCRs, etc. Calling all bakers! Pet Fest Bake Sale is less than a month away. All types of quick breads such as banana, pumpkin, zucchini freeze well. Cookie dough can also been

2 frozen and baked the week of the sale. Canned goods such as jams, jellies and pickles are also welcome. Raaen Scholarships: Applications are now being accepted for the Raaen Scholarship. Application forms may be obtained in the church office. The applications must be returned to the office no later than October 31 st to be considered. The Administering Commission will review the applications and recommend those eligible for financial aid to Council for approval. If you have any questions pertaining to the scholarship, please contact a member of the Administering Commission. A Psalm and a Prayer: Grace is offering a new prayer opportunity at 7:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. The next session will be on October 2. We will explore different types of prayer that focus on being open to what God is saying to us. We will look at spiritual practices developed over the ages, such as centering prayer, contemplative prayer, Ignatian exercises, and Christian meditation. Many people find one or more of these types of prayer useful additions to their other spiritual practices such as daily prayer or praying for others. Each session begins with a brief study of Luther s commentary on the Psalms, offers some time for reflection, and ends with a period of prayer. The sessions will last about 45 minutes. They will be led by Judy Goans and held in the narthex. CALLING ALL YOUTH: Youth group meetings will resume this month, with new opportunities to engage with kids from other area Lutheran congregations. In addition to our own monthly meetings, we'll be coordinating activities with these churches. Plans are also in the works for us to attend the All TN Youth Gathering the second week of November. Youth group is open to those in sixth grade and up. For more information, contact Sharon Boudreaux. Grace Photography Group Forming: The new Grace Photographers Group will have its first meeting on Saturday, September 15 at 2:00 p.m. in Room 101. Anyone interested in learning is invited. At this meeting we will discuss tips for taking photos at the Pet Fest and Blessing. Meetings will be monthly on the third Saturday, subject to change if necessary. Since photography is developed through repetition, we plan to have a prompt each month to provide a level of direction. We will discuss our photos with the goal of becoming better photographers. Part of the time will be dedicated to how to questions about cameras, terminology, composition, and what to do with digital images after you take them. We may also view videos by professionals from time to time. For further information, please call Stan Long. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We did it! We saved the Food Pantry! Now, each month, we will only order what we can pay for (isn t that a unique idea). Thank you for your generous support of this ministry. Contributions of laundry soap and diapers are always welcome. Learning Opportunities at Grace Adult Sunday School resumes a study of Lose s Making Sense of the Cross, by David J. Lose. The overarching question is why God let Jesus die such a painful death. Meet in Room 101 at 10:10 a.m. 2

3 Monday Morning Bible Study meets Mondays at 10:00 a.m. in Room 101. The class is exploring Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again, by Rachel Held Evans. Copies of the book are available in the office. Join us next week! Come join the Thursday evening Bible Study this year for a "stratified sample" of the Bible! Following the book, 3:16 Bible Texts Illuminated, written by Computer Scientist and professor Donald E. Knuth, we will look at verse 3:16 from every book of the Bible in no particular order, one book a week. The verse will be examined in detail, and it will be related to neighboring verses and the book as a whole. The class meets at 7:00 p.m. in Room 101. A Joyful Noise: All rehearsals have resumed on Wednesdays. First Harmony (for age 6 and up) rehearses from 3-4 p.m., Ringspiration handbell choir at 5:45 p.m., and Chancel Choir at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome! Via de Cristo weekend, October 18-21! Experience an amazing weekend of God s wonderful grace, be fully immersed in God s love; laugh, sing, and fellowship with other Christians at the next Via de Cristo weekend. For more information, contact Janet or Rick Rawl, Nancy Munro, or Betty Ann Domm. And be on the lookout for more details closer to the weekend. What is OLSE? Other Languages for Speakers of English, an outgrowth of our ESOL program. Currently, we have four ongoing classes! Spanish, taught by Jeniffer Navarro, meets Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. in Room 101. A beginning Spanish class, taught by Adrianna Dominguez, has been added on Wednesday evenings from 6-7 p.m. in Room 101. Chinese will continue as a study group until our new teacher starts. Russian class, taught by Tatiana Krasovskaya, meets Mondays and Fridays, from 12-1:30 p.m. in Room 101. Good news: Korean has resumed and meets Mondays from a.m. in Room 107. All OLSE classes are free and open to anyone, Grace member or not. Please invite someone! Opportunities to Serve The grass is still growing and mowers are still needed! The signup sheet has been moved from the bulletin board in the hallway outside the kitchen to the back entrance. Thanks to everyone who has been mowing and keeping our grounds looking good! Contact Janie Hiserote or Rick Rawl with any questions. Blanket Workshop has resumed its usual schedule, meeting every first, third, and fifth Thursday of the month, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Bring a sack lunch and invite others to join you as we create quilts of comfort and love for God s people all over the world, as well as at home. Tyson House at UTK: Want to support our Lutheran campus ministry? Get to know interested students and staff? Please let Laura Boudon or any member of Proclaiming know if you d be interested in helping support our Lutheran-Episcopal campus ministry by assisting with a Sunday evening meal occasionally. You could either provide food or donate money. Join Pastor Larry and Laura, Riley and Margaret Cumberland, and Sharon Boudreaux in this rewarding ministry. (Continued on page 6) 3
