1 Third Sunday in Lent March 4, 2018 Church News and Events Remember to spring forward on Saturday, March 10! Daylight Time starts at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, March 11. LENT Please note that Lenten services will be held each week at 6:15 p.m. in the sanctuary, preceded by chanting of the None (Ninth Hour) at 6:00. Please set aside this time for reflection. World premier TODAY! At the 11:15 service, Grace Chancel Choir will combine with Robert Stewart, violinist, violist Dan Joy, cellist Cathy Whitten, French hornist Ingrid Busch, flutist Barbara Sparks, and organist Joy Fournier to offer the world premiere of Robert Stewart s new composition, These Hours No One Sees. The work, celebrating the peace of God given in our darkest times, is not to be missed. Remember to pick up an ARK coin bank and a Lenten calendar to support Heifer International through Lent. We will collect the coin banks on Palm Sunday. Easter Food Baskets will be distributed on Saturday, March 24. We need lots of volunteers! We will meet at 8:00 a.m. to set up tables and tape boxes together. At 9:00 a.m. we will start filling over 200 boxes with food for 36 families. Families can pick up the food boxes between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. WE NEED YOU regardless of your age or vigor. Come join us. In this season of flu and viruses, please be aware of the possibility of spreading illness by shaking hands. It is advisable to use another means of greeting one another during the Time of Welcoming and the Passing of the Peace. Elbow and fist bumps or just standing and talking without contact are preferable. Thank you for helping protect those who are most vulnerable. Our Annual Women's Tea is scheduled for Sunday, March 18, from 2:30-4:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Light refreshments will be served. Bring a book you have enjoyed and would enjoy telling others about. And bring a friend! Please RSVP by March 14 to the church office or Donna Gurecki. Name Tag Sundays: Thank you for wearing a name tag! Pastor Larry and our newer folks appreciate this as it helps all in getting acquainted. Prayer meeting is held on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. (This is a change from the third Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.) The informal format includes scripture, time for meditation, music, and corporate and individual prayer opportunities. The next meeting is Thursday, March 15 at 6:00p.m. in the sanctuary. All are welcome - bring a friend!
2 Many thanks to all who have donated books for our Little Free Library. It is being actively used! Please bring any books to donate in small quantities now as our storage space is very limited. Learning Opportunities at Grace Children and Youth Sunday School: All classes meet at 10:00 a.m. The children meet in Jacob s Ladder (the room beside the nursery). Youth meet upstairs in the youth room (at the top of the stairs to the right). The adult Sunday School class will look at A Boatload of Trinitarian Heresies. How would our faith be different if these heresies had become the accepted belief? The class meets at 10:10 a.m. in Room 101 and all are welcome. Monday Morning Bible Study class has resumed come and bring a friend! Currently, they are studying the Gospel of John. Come join the Thursday evening Bible Study this year for a "stratified sample" of the Bible! Following the book, 3:16 Bible Texts Illuminated, written by Computer Scientist and professor Donald E. Knuth, we will look at verse 3:16 from every book of the Bible in no particular order, one book a week. The verse will be examined in detail, and it will be related to neighboring verses and the book as a whole. Feel free to pop by at 7:00 p.m. whenever you have a free Thursday night! Alpha Is Here: Thank you for your prayers and support for our venture into Alpha. It is an opportunity for folks with questions about the Christian faith to explore and consider it and if you are a Christian, to deepen your faith and help you become more comfortable with saying "Come and see" to friends or others who might be seeking more meaning in life. You may want to consider attending the fall course which will start in early September. To find out more and register for the fall, come Sunday, March 25, at 6:15 p.m. to our wrap-up party! Please RSVP to the church office or Alpha Team. Please keep all who are attending and all the team supporting it in your prayers. A Joyful Noise: First Harmony (for age 6 and up) rehearses from 3:00-4:00 p.m., Wednesdays. Ringspiration handbell choir rehearses at 5:00 p.m. during Lent; Chancel Choir at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome! What is OLSE? Other Languages for Speakers of English, a spontaneous outgrowth of our ESOL program. Currently, we have three ongoing classes! Spanish, taught by our very own Jeniffer Navarro, meets Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. in Room 101. Chinese, taught by native Mandarin speaker Lotus Wang, meets Fridays from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in Room 101. Korean class, taught by native speaker Aileen O Kada, meets on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. in Room 101. All are free and open to anyone, Grace member or not. Fellowship In case of emergency: Our office phone is not monitored outside of office hours. If you have a pastoral emergency, please contact Pastor Larry Boudon. 2
3 Opportunities to Serve Flower Calendar 2018: Thanks to all who have signed up to provide altar flowers this year. We now have flowers for the first 6 months of the year. Please take a look at the calendar located in the hallway above the mail folders and find a date that you would like to give altar flowers in the time period between July through December. If you have coupons from KARM and would like to donate them to the church, please put them in Judy Joy s folder. The Prayer Shawl Ministry has weekly working meetings on Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., in the narthex. Anyone interested in crafting a prayer shawl in the company of others is invited. All who want to learn how to knit or crochet are also invited. There is plenty of yarn to use, but you will need to bring knitting needles or a crochet hook of the appropriate size. Please contact Dore Busch or Barbara Sparks if you would like more information. In addition to prayer shawls, the Prayer Shawl Ministry is starting a project to make scarves to be donated to a Knoxville church that brings scarves to the homeless in Knoxville. They could also be given to other locations, such as shelters or Ronald McDonald House. Suggested dimensions are approximately 7-9 inches wide and 60 inches long. Any pattern could be used, but open-weave or lacy patterns might not be warm enough. We are hoping to have scarves ready by October for next year s cold season. If you would like more information, please contact Barbara Sparks. The next Men's Group meeting will be on Saturday, March 10. Coffee will be ready by 7:30 a.m. with breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Our speaker is Leon Klatt. His presentation "Woodworking Hobby or Converting Perfectly Good Stock into Scrap" will give background on his interest in woodworking, show key pieces of equipment, show some examples of his work including challenges in construction, and discuss the different styles of wooden bowls. Two bowls will be given to attendees at via a random name drawing. All men of Grace are invited to attend. If you have questions or need information, please contact Phil Stumbo. We look forward to having you join us. The Men's Group will not meet in April. Instead, we will focus our efforts on providing breakfast for all on Easter Sunday, April 1. We will start serving around 7:45 a.m. after the 7:00 a.m. sunrise service and continue up until the traditional service at 11:15 a.m. A signup sheet will be posted on the bulletin board on the ramp outside the kitchen for the me to use to indicate what you plan to bring and when. A signup sheet from last year will be attached for your information. We need hot dishes, pastries, coffee cakes, bagels, fruit, juice and milk, etc. We also need volunteers to serve after and during each service. In addition, we need help setting up Room 101 on Saturday afternoon and help cleaning up after breakfast on Sunday. We look forward to having you join us. If you have questions, please call Phil Stumbo. 3 (Continued on page 6)

An updated directory is now available. Members may request a printed or electronic copy from the office. Lights Out, Please! Lights are being left on, especially in the upstairs hallway and the old stairwell. Please double check to be sure all lights are off if you are the last to leave a room or section of the building. Thank you! If you have bulletin board announcements, check with the office about where and how to put them up. Please date all bulletin board announcements. Items will be left up until the date of the event being announced. If the item is not about a particular event, it will be left for several weeks then replaced or moved. If bulletin boards are not changed periodically, they lose their effectiveness and people are less likely to pay attention to them. Want to win a gift card? Find the hidden shamrocks in your March LIGHT. Find three of the shamrocks like the one shown on Page 24, hidden in this issue. Please send the page numbers where you find them to Pat Hope by March 31. Only or text messages accepted. Prize to be awarded in early April. 6
7 Grace s Mission Statement: Love Jesus and Help Others Love Him, Too. We are on a spiritual journey together. Although we have all traveled different roads, God has met each of us on the way.
