Mk 1:14 Living the Liturgy Repent and believe in the gospel! This is the message that is found on Jesus' lips after forty days in the desert. As the forty days of Lent come before us, we are asked to create a desert experience in our lives so that we can learn anew the ways of God. Our daily cares and concerns can distract us from truth and cause us to become absorbed with the world and secular priorities. Lent is an opportunity to free ourselves from illusion and focus us on what really matters. In doing so, we open up new possibilities for our relationship with God, others, our world, and ourselves. Readings for the Week Monday: Lv 19:1-2, 11-18; Ps 19:8-10, 15; Mt 25:31-46 Tuesday: Is 55:10-11; Ps 34:4-7, 16-19; Mt 6:7-15 Wednesday: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19; Lk 11:29-32 Thursday: 1 Pt 5:1-4; Ps 23:1-6; Mt 16:13-19 Friday: Ez 18:21-28; Ps 130:1-8; Mt 5:20-26 Saturday: Dt 26:16-19; Ps 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8; Mt 5:43-48 Sunday: Gn 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18; Ps 116:10, 15-19; Rom 8:31-34; Mk 9:2-10 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: First Sunday of Lent; Rite of Election; Rite of Calling the Candidates to Continuing Conversion; Rite of Sending Monday: Presidents Day; Julian Calendar Lent Wednesday: St. Peter Damian Thursday: Chair of St. Peter the Apostle; Washington s Birthday Friday: St. Polycarp; Abstinence Intention President Trump and USA Rolanda Shafer Ann Orlik Roger Jerde Mary Lou McConnaughey Dorothy Thomson indicates deceased Why do we always go to the desert? We see this example in Scripture time and time again. The Israelites wandered in the desert. King David and prophets were driven into the wilderness. And now Jesus is in the same place. Lent after Lent, we too are invited into a barren, desolate place. Why do we always go to the desert? Throughout Scripture, the desert is a place of testing. It's also a place of hiding and withdrawal. In the Old Testament, David fled into the wilderness to hide from Saul, Elijah from Jezebel, and Jonah from God! In other words, the desert is a place of "retreat." In Christian circles, we use the word to describe a spiritual weekend away. But its meaning comes from warfare, as we well know. To retreat means to draw back, to separate oneself from the fighting. Of course, a military retreat brings its own kind of "battle" the internal assessment of why the fighting went so poorly. As we enter into this Lenten season, we are invited to retreat into the desert with Jesus. Attending a day or weekend of reflection is a wonderful spiritual practice. This "desert spirituality," however, can fill all forty days. We can fulfill our Lenten resolutions with a purpose writing daily notes to family and friends can inspire new gratitude, every time we pass up that specific food item can be cause for intercession for deeper sufferings and privations of others. The Gospel tells us that "the Spirit drove him out into the desert." In other words, God wants us to be here. What feels uncomfortable is actually part of our spiritual journey. To be stretched, to be challenged, to confront our own areas of weakness these things are essential in our walk with God. This Lent, will you go to the desert? Becoming Catholic Sacraments of Initiation Are you wondering what life is all about, perhaps asking yourself, What is my purpose, or Why am I here? You are welcome to seek answers with us! While we offer seasonal Connection to Christ groups to all adults, the Rite of Christian initiation of Adults (RCIA) group is the process by which the unbaptized and baptized Christians of other faith traditions, are invited to explore Catholic spirituality in community, deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ. Our group meets weekly on Sunday mornings, year-round. The faith journey is unique to each person, and is often characterized by an awakening, or conversion of the heart, that leads one to desire an authentic life of Christian discipleship. Through the foundational sacraments of initiation Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist we encounter and participate fully in the mystery of Jesus Christ s life, saving death, and Resurrection. God wants us to know His love and fulfilling plan for our lives! We welcome all inquiries and look forward to accompanying you soon. Please Lee Hulburt, RCIA coordinator, at lee@saintbrigidparish.org or call her at (858) x117. 4

For more information, Contact Katie Brown at (858) What is FHMB? Friends and Helpers of Madre Berenice began with a 2003 mission trip to Ecuador. Another visit followed in 2004 to learn more about the Guasmo, Guayaquil parish of Reina Del Quinche and its needs. The parish was served by its pastor and the Sisters of the Annunciation of Columbia. They had begun building a hospital (Hospital Madre Berenice) and day health clinic to serve nearly 300,000 of the poverty stricken people in the Guasmo area. In 2005, six missionaries from Saint Brigid Parish traveled to Ecuador with suitcases filled with items needed. By the end of that year, a non-profit foundation was established. Since that time, FHMB has been instrumental in providing many appliances and items for the soup kitchen, as well as donating high-tech medical machines and supplies, which were greatly needed in this poor community. Here s what a parishioner who has been blessed by serving FHMB has to say, Since the first visit in 2003, many lives have been changed, especially ours. We will never be the same we don't want to be. We hope you'll join us on one of our missions, through supporting our events, making a donation, and spreading the word about our work. Get inspired and learn more at

Friends, I invite you to participate in the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal for the Diocese of San Diego, Sharing God s Gifts. As disciples, we are called to use the gifts we have received from the Lord in service of others. As Catholics, we are many parts but all one body. United with 96 other parishes throughout the diocese, we can make a tremendous impact as we strive to carry out the mission Jesus entrusted to us! The Annual Catholic Appeal provides an opportunity to share our gifts beyond our parish boundaries, in support of programs that serve San Diego and Imperial Counties. ACA packets, which detail the groups supported by the appeal, are being mailed to all registered parishioners this week. Our parish goal this year is $76,000. I am confident that, with your help, we can exceed our goal! Funds collected beyond our parish goal will go to our new parish young adult ministry endowment fund which will aid in providing outreach, formation, and support to young adults in all stages of their journey single, engaged, married, and parenting. Thank you for your support as we participate in living the Church s mission to be witnesses of compassion and mercy to those in need.
