1 Breaking Bread Our Mission is Growing Disciples of Jesus Christ The Newsletter of the Episcopal Church of St. Peter & St. Paul ~ April 2018 A Season to Rejoice! Alelluia! Christ is Risen! In this Easter season, build on the spiritual growth in Lent even as we celebrate our Lord s resurrection. Read further in Breaking Bread and you will find many opportunities to grow. My Sunday School class on the Why s of Worship will now turn to other Prayer Book services such as Confirmation, Marriage, Reconciliation and the Burial service. On May 6, Bishop Wimberly will teach a class on Ordination, and on May 13, George Chesnut will teach a class on the Hymnal and church music. There are other opportunities to grow as a Disciple of Jesus. A new Heroes of the Bible study has just started on Sunday mornings, and we are planning to Unplug and Connect at the annual Parish Retreat May 4-6 at beautiful Rock Eagle Conference Center, about 90 minutes from here. The retreat is for people of all ages, a great chance to connect with each other and with God. We are also asking for your prayers and your help in discerning where next God is calling us to serve Christ in the world. A Service Discernment Team has been formed, and we have some funds to help support new initiatives that draw more parishioners into relationship with those in need. Read the article inside, and speak with Peter Williams or Rachel Buhler to learn more. The season of Easter is the season of resurrection, where we celebrate the gift of new life in Christ. 3 3 Breaking Bread Parish Update On Sunday, March 4, we had two Parish Update Meetings to review 2017 and look ahead to Here are some highlights: 2017: 22 new households for 74 new members. Total of 974 Active Baptized Members from 411 households. Our average weekend attendance in 2017 was 359 (down in part due to snow days and New Year s Day). We had 3 Weddings, 12 Funerals, and 13 Baptisms, 26 confirmed or received. 136 children and youth and 275 adults were involved in some sort of Christian Education, including through 16 different programs for adults. Our parish is 24% Children & Youth, 12% Young Adults, 25% Middle Adults (40-59), and 39% seniors (60+). 30% of the parish has joined since 2011 (21% since 2014). We finished 2017 with an operating surplus of $59,490, due to higher than expected income and lower than budgeted expenses (several new hires happened later than planned). In January, we had 267 Pledges for 2018 for a record $1,042,945, a 6% increase since last year (+19% since 2014). The Carpenter s Work raised over $500,000 in pledges and over $300,000 in cash, completed Phase One (parking lot, carpet and HVAC), and paid a tithe to Church of the Holy Comforter. As we receive cash payments toward pledges, we will be able to implement projects in Phase Two. We have $13,767 to go to reach our pledge goal of $550,000. We welcomed new staff: Matt Martin (Youth Minister), Kayla White (Administrative Assistant), Susan Prout (Director of Newcomer s Ministry), and four Choir Section Leaders. We saw advancements in several ministries, in new members, and in growth in Bible Studies. We are now hosting Family Promise families, involving over 80 members of the parish. And we are maturing in our Christian relationships and supporting one another Vestry Goals Help discern & identify where God is calling us to serve Christ in the World (with a new Service Discernment Team) Support the Carpenter s Work Ensure that we have Vacation Bible School in 2018 Address long term Spiritual Growth of the parish: Depth of Christian Commitment and Christian Relationships Encourage and Support Evangelism Initiatives Encourage and Support Worship Initiatives Many of these goals will be accomplished by the Forums themselves, but the vestry will take an active role in encouraging and supporting that work. In many cases, there are also designated funds from restricted donations that can support these initiatives. For a more complete report from the meeting, contact the parish office.

4 Breaking Bread 4 Service Discernment Team Goal of the team To discern and identify where God is calling us to serve Christ in the world. The team will be praying, searching, watching and listening as to how God is revealing where His people are hurting the greatest. We as a Parish are collectively commanded to share our relationship with Christ and the many blessings we have in our lives with those around us who are in pain, at risk and suffering in many different ways. Members of the team Merilee Allen; John Bareham; Rachel Buhler; John Clark, Martha Davis; Mtr. Elisa Harres; Linda Koehler; Rudy Lind; Susan Prout; Keith Purser; Stephanie Runge; Peter Williams. The team was assembled to represent all parts of the church membership as well as include some with Service Forum experience as well as people not previously involved with the Service Forum. What is this about? The Vestry has commissioned this team to review the current and potential future Service ministries. The desire is to create a step change in the number of members in our Christian community of disciples who are able to serve others in the world. These expanded ministries must tie in with SPSP s mission and vision and could be an extension or rejuvenation of a ministry we are already involved in OR tapping into a program that already exists OR something entrepreneurial. We expect that the strategic plan will result in opportunities for multiple volunteers within the Parish to enable Service to be a part of the lives of a greater number of members at St Peter and St Paul (not a ministry of 1-2 people) The final proposal will lead to a sustainable ministry initiated by a seed fund given in order to start expanding St Peter and Paul's Service Ministries. Process The team has been assembled, and is entering a period of prayerful listening to God, talking to others in the community and the Parish, and will be very interested in hearing from you. We hope you feel invited to act most particularly if you are being led to increase your service to others or have ideas, insights and experiences you wish to share. We are forming three teams of four to support each other as we open ourselves up to this discernment process. Please hold the team in your prayers, and talk to those on the team you know, as a big part of their hearing God's call will likely be carried in the conversations with you, our fellow disciples. Next Steps Sunday March 4th Announce to the Parish Mid-Year meeting and invite participation and prayer Monday May 21st Report to Vestry on progress and share updates September Vestry Meeting Recommendations on next steps, with plans for inclusions in the Budget for 2019

6 Breaking Bread 6 by Matt Martin, Youth Minister Leading Change & Sarah s Story Youth Highlights - April 2018 As the school year enters the final stretch, the Youth Ministry is beginning to focus more on planning and preparing for the Middle School Beach Trip in July and the High School Mission Trip to Puerto Rico in June. I have also been praying and thinking through the vision and theme for next year and what God is calling us to focus on as we recruit volunteers and make plans for another great year of youth programming. One question keeps coming to mind: how can we fully embrace a vision for developing student leaders? One recommendation in Leading Successful Change is to create a story of what you would like to see. Sarah s Story is a fictional story of what could happen in the years to come at St. Peter and St. Paul if we fully embrace this vision for developing student leaders and growing disciples of Jesus Christ. Sarah s Story Sarah was in 8 th grade at Hightower Trail middle school when Ashley invited her to go to church with her at St. Peter and St. Paul. Ashley and Sarah were in the same class together and talked every day. Lately, Ashley noticed that Sarah seemed down because her parents were getting a divorce. Sarah s family rarely went to church, so she was a little scared when Ashley invited her. But Sarah agreed, because Ashley was a good friend and seemed to really enjoy going to church. As soon as Sarah walked in the doors to the youth area, adults and students welcomed her and seemed really friendly. Sarah was blown away by how nice people were. The walls were brightly decorated and there was cool music playing. Ashley grabbed a donut while Sarah helped herself to the bagels and fruit before heading into the Sunday school room. The Sunday school room was divided up into sections, each with a circle of chairs for small groups to meet. Sarah sat in on Ashley s small group and played a fun game that made them all laugh a lot. Then they spent time reading and talking about a passage from the Bible and how it applied to their life. As they talked, Sarah realized that the other girls were going through problems similar to her, but there was something different about them; they had hope and God in their life. Later on, Sarah told Ashley that the worship service was a little weird but also kind of cool. These people really care a lot about God, she thought. Because she had such a great time and everyone was so nice, Sarah decided to keep going back to church with Ashley and even joined the small group of girls that meets during Sunday school. After a few weeks, Sarah began to think about why the other students at church seemed so genuine and caring. They weren t like most of the kids at her school who only cared what she wore and who she hung out with. Sarah began asking questions about God and faith and how she can have hope like they do. Some of the student leaders gave Sarah a Bible and explained how to read it for herself and how to start praying to God about her problems. She didn t even know that she could do that on her own. They encouraged her to try and they even offered to meet up with her after school to talk more about what s going on in her life and how they could encourage her. Ashley started writing Sarah encouraging notes with inspirational quotes from the Bible.

7 7 Breaking Bread Reading the Bible and praying was hard at first. Sarah didn t even know if she was doing it right. One day at lunch, she told Ashley about something she read in the book of Palms. Ashely laughed and explained that it was the book of Psalms and not palms. But the more Sarah read and prayed the more she wanted to learn about God and living a life of faith. Certain words and stories began to stand out to her and she felt encouraged as if God was saying it to her. She looked forward to reading her bible and praying every day. She even started journaling down her thoughts and questions. As she shared her thoughts with her girl s small group each Sunday, she could feel God was becoming real in her life. In the small group, Sarah also began to open up about her parents divorce and the struggles she was having at home. The other girls listened and shared encouraging words to her about how much they care about her and how much God cares about her too. For the first time she began to feel hope in a hopeless situation. She began to see that her circumstances weren t a reflection of how God felt about her. She knew God wasn t punishing her and that her parent s divorce wasn t her fault at all. Her heart grew warm and she began to feel God s love for her. She began to realize that she was special in God s eyes. She knew God cared because her small group was a reflection of God s heart for her. In the next few months, Sarah couldn t help but tell everyone she knew about God s love for them. Before school each day she prayed that God would use her to reveal His love to someone that day. At lunch and in the hallways, she spent time talking to those who felt left out and overlooked. Ashley chuckled when she noticed that Sarah started quoting things Jesus said. Sarah s face beamed with joy even when things didn t go her way. Other students began to notice and they wanted to know more about why she had so much joy. Sarah spent a lot of time listening to others about their problems and spiritual questions. As Sarah was getting ready to start high school at Pope, one of the adult leaders at St. Peter and St. Paul noticed how much Sarah was growing and also that she had potential to be a small group leader. The adult leader began to encourage Sarah to join the leadership team, which was like a small group just for leaders. Sarah was excited about the opportunity but also really scared. What would people think of me? she wondered. Sarah objected that she didn t know enough about the Bible or how to help people. But the adult leader knew that Sarah had experienced God s love and explained that the heart of a good small group leader was wanting other people to experience God s love too. Ashley and Sarah started leading their first small group together and were amazed that the other girls had a great time. They laughed a lot and even opened up during the prayer time. Emma shared that her parents were getting a divorce. Sarah knew how Emma felt, and Sarah also knew God s heart for her. Sarah prayed for Emma and encouraged her to keep coming. Sarah knew she was right where God wanted her, and she was so thankful that Ashley took the risk to invite her to church. Youth Group Resumes to its normal schedule for April! Come for fun games and discussions on faith and life. MS 5-6:15 Dinner 6:15-6:45pm HS 6:45-8pm
