June 10 th, 2018 Third Sunday after Pentecost Reception of New Members Welcome to this service of worship at Norfield Congregational Church on this Sunday morning. Please join us after worship for Fellowship in the Parish Hall. Ringing of the Bell Call to Worship Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Invocation All: PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all cell phones and other electronic devices. *All who are able, please stand in body or in spirit. On this Sunday, we come to worship God. We come, trusting God will speak to us; we come, hoping God will surprise us. On this day, like every other day, we seek to follow Jesus: We follow, believing Jesus will be with us; we follow, hoping Jesus will work through us. On this day, we lift our souls to God's Spirit: We open our hearts, that the Spirit may fill us; we open our hands, that we might be a gift to others. We have come to worship. Holy One, Surprise us! Lead us! Guide us! O God, in the midst of the world you call us deep into your mystery of love. You offer us precious time to immerse ourselves in your abundant life, and refresh us in your vision of wholeness for all. Meet us here and show us again the goodness of all you have made. Restore our hope and strengthen our courage to follow Jesus through both the ordinary and the wondrous moments of our lives. Amen. Jim Miller *Hymn No. 487 When Morning Gilds the Skies LAUDES DOMINI

Welcome and Announcements Pastoral Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS We give thanks for every step in your life s journey that brings you to this decision today. Let the power of God s Spirit rest upon you as you affirm your faith before this gathering. Do you profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and do you promise, by the grace of God, to follow in the way of our Savior, to resist evil, to show love and justice, and to witness to the work and word of Jesus Christ, as best you can? If so, please say I do. Candidates: I do. Do you promise to be a faithful member of the Norfield Church family, giving of yourself in every way, to fulfill your calling as a follower of Christ? If so, please say I do. Candidates: I do. (to Congregation) Do you promise to care for and support them as they grow in their relationship with God and this church family? If so, please say We do. Congregation: We do. Deacon: Let us all stand and affirm the covenant of Norfield Congregational Church: All: We promise to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and we take as our rule of life the words: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself. We take this church to be our church, and ever mindful of our fellow members, we promise to walk with them in faithfulness and Christian love. We promise that so far as possible we will attend the services of this church, share in its mission, and endeavor to make it a fruitful body of Christians. Let us pray. Eternal God, we praise you for calling us to be your servant people and for gathering us into the Body of Christ. Confirm in us the power of your covenant that we may live in your Spirit, share regularly in worship, and so love each other that we may have among us the same mind which was in Christ Jesus, to all honor and glory. All: Amen.

Children in Grades K 8 will leave at this time for an activity with Penny in the Norfield Room. *Hymn No. 492 Baptized in Water BUNESSAN HEARING GOD S WORD Scripture Readings read in unison Psalm ; 6-11 (NRSV) Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 6 Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them. 7 You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. Selah 8 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. 9 Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding, whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you. 10 Many are the torments of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the LORD. 11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart. Matthew 4: 1-12 (NRSV) Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. 3 The tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread. 4 But he answered, It is written, One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 saying to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, and On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said to him, Again it is written, Do not put the Lord your God to the test. 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; 9 and he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me. 10 Jesus said to him, Away with you, Satan! for it is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. 11 Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him. 12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. Sermon Faith through Ordinary Days Rev. Dr. Bernard R. Wilson

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Andrew, Hadley, & William Salem Dearly beloved, baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is through this grace that we become partakers of his righteousness and heirs of life eternal. Those receiving the Sacrament of Baptism through it, come into the fellowship of Christ's Holy Church. Jesus has expressly given to little children, a place among the people of God, a holy privilege that must not be denied them. Congregation: There is one body and one Spirit. There is one hope in God s call to us. QUESTIONS TO THE PARENTS: Parents: Parents: Parents: Parents: Elizabeth and Matthew, do you desire to have your children baptized into the faith and family of Jesus Christ? We do. Will you, Elizabeth and Matthew encourage Andrew, Hadley, and William to renounce the powers of evil and to receive the freedom of new life in Christ? We will with the help of God. Will you teach them that they may be led to profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior? We will, with the help of God. Do you promise, according to the grace given you, to grow with them in the Christian faith, to help them, to be faithful members, of the church of Jesus Christ, by celebrating Christ s presence, by furthering Christ s mission in all the world, and by offering the nurture of the Christian church so that they may affirm their Baptism? We promise, with the help of God. THE CONGREGATIONAL ASSENT Jesus Christ calls us to make disciples of all nations and to offer them the gift of grace in Baptism. Do you, who witness and celebrate this Sacrament, promise, as you are able, your love, support and care to these children about to be baptized, to live and grow in Christ? If so, please repeat after me: We promise our love, support and care. Congregation: We promise our love, support and care.

THE PRAYER OF BLESSING Pastor: This is the water of Baptism. Out of this water we rise with new life, forgiven of sin and one in Christ, members of Christ s body. Join me as we pray together. Deacon: Bless by your Holy Spirit, gracious God, this water. By your Holy Spirit, save those who confess the name of Jesus Christ that sin may have no power over them. Create new life in those baptized this day that they may rise in Christ. Glory to you, eternal God, the one who was, and is, and shall always be, world without end. Amen. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM What names are given to these children? Parents: Andrew, Hadley, and William. THE ACT OF BAPTISM Let us pray. Gracious God, you have filled the world with joy by giving us the gift of Jesus. You have filled the world of this family with joy by giving them these children. So bless these newly baptized individuals. May they be filled with joy; may they never be ashamed to confess a personal faith in you. May they always show gratitude for the life you have given, by loving and caring for their parents. Bless the parents, give them courage, strength and patience for the task of parenting. Bless all your faithful people. Unite them with the peace of Christ and the company of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE CONGREGATIONAL WECOME (unison) We receive Andrew, Hadley, and William as new people in Christ. We offer our understanding and support as they experience life. We enfold them in our love, seeking together to grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and all people.
