1 As followers of Jesus we are commissioned to go and make disciples. (Matthew 28:19). However, we don t often talk about what it means to be a disciple. As we move beyond just being members of the church to grow more fully into being disciples of Jesus who lead others to become disciples we have the opportunity to see where we are on the journey as individuals and as a congregation. The Real Discipleship Survey is a simple way to see where we are in each of six dimensions of discipleship: A Life of Worship A Life of Hospitality A Life Opening to Jesus A Life Obeying Jesus A Life of Service A Life of Generosity It will be most beneficial for you and for Riverside if each of us take this simple survey. It takes about ten minutes and you will receive a report indicating where you are on the path to maturity for each dimension, possible next steps for growth, and suggested resources for personal development. As a congregation we will receive a matrix giving the percentage of persons identifying themselves in each of the levels of maturity for each dimension. (We will not see your personal results.) This matrix will help us plan an intentional discipleship process to help us as individuals and as a congregation grow as disciples. Your participation in this survey and making use of the resources that will be shared with you will help us to equip ourselves for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:12-13). To take the survey online go to or click here. Enter Your address. Enter this code: gzmtli. Enter your name and Riverside UMC. You will see a matrix with six colors and four columns. Read each of the squares of ONE COLOR and select the one that best describes where you are. When you click on your selection the squares of that color will turn grey indicating you have completed that dimension. If you do not have access to a computer you can contact the church office ( ) and make arrangements to come in and take the survey here at the church on our computers or to take the survey on paper and we will process it for you. Thank you for being a member of Riverside who is willing to move toward maturity as a disciple of Jesus by taking this survey. Shalom in Christ, John Riverside United Methodist Church Ignites Faith Invites Others Involves Service Page 1
2 Proposal for Major Repairs to Church Building Major repairs are needed to preserve our church building and to make it safe. These are not cosmetic repairs or facility upgrades. They include the following with estimates that need to be updated for current pricing. Complete repair of east entrance which has caused water damage to basement wall and steps that are crumbling and unsafe (this may go higher when the drainage problem is uncovered): 47,900 Re-caulking windows in education wing: 19,800 Removal and replacement of retaining wall on north and east side window well: 78,500 Fascia and soffit of old building repaired or replaced: 6,260 Main entrance door repair: 2,500 Repair of plaster in sanctuary, prayer room, Tom s office, and fellowship hall: 2,700 Subtotal 157,660 Parking Lot repair and sealing? New heater/air conditioner in room 103? Given these major concerns The Endowment Committee at its April 11, 2018 meeting recommended to the Governing Board that principal from our Riverside endowment be withdrawn and used to make major repairs to our church building. Section H of our Riverside Endowment Document states, Undesignated Account principal may be withdrawn only in extreme and overwhelming circumstances, bordering on the survival of The Church. Any withdrawal of principal must be approved by a majority vote of the Endowment Committee and a three-fourths (3/4) vote of the Charge Conference of Riverside United Methodist Church at which a quorum is present. The undesignated account principal is approximately $431,000. It varies with the stock market. The Governing Council at its April 23 rd meeting recommended that we move forward with the Endowment Committee s recommendation and call a church conference to encourage broader participation by members of the church. This will extend the vote to all professing members of the local church present at the church conference. The facilities team will recommend and prioritize the repairs to be made and obtain current bids then we will request the district superintendent to authorize a church conference. Notice of time and place of the church conference shall be given at least ten days in advance by two or more of the following: from the pulpit of the church, in its weekly bulletin, in a local church publication, or by mail. We will give such notice once the church conference is scheduled. If you have questions or concerns contact Darwin Keyton, Governing Council Chairperson; Larry Souders, Facilities Team Chairperson, or Pastor Young. Baptism and Church Membership, Pentecost Sunday, May 20 If you would like to profess your faith in the Risen Christ through Christian baptism and/or join the United Methodist Church and/or this congregation please contact Pastor Young, or john.young@inumc.org no later than Wednesday, May 9. We will be receiving new members on Pentecost Sunday, May 20. Riverside United Methodist Church Ignites Faith Invites Others Involves Service Page 2
3 2018 Spring Habitat Church Workdays Riverside has committed to assist Muncie Habitat with its mission to eliminate poverty housing in Muncie, Indiana. We are committed to work on Friday and Saturday May 4 & 5. We will be working on a rehab at 1616 S. Elm Street. We are to provide 12 people. The work day will be from 9 to 3 with lunch at noon. We are also committed to provide lunches each day. If you have questions contact Joe Speece at church or or jmspeece@aol.com. If you would like to help with the lunches please contact Nancy Campbell at church or or campbell1322@att.net. The signup sheet is located at the Mission bulletin board. Joe Speece FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR Do you have hidden musical talents? Do your children or grandchildren play an instrument or sing in their school s choir? Would they be willing to share their musical talent with Riverside Church this summer? I am looking for help with special music during the months of June, July and August. If you or someone you know might be interested please contact the church office or rebeccadorn@yahoo.com and let us know. Just remember that Psalm 95:1-2 states, Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord... Let us come before him with a song of praise, joyfully sing out our psalms. And Psalm 98:1 reads, Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done marvelous deeds. We sing because our hearts are bursting with joy, and mere speech cannot do justice to what we feel. We raise our voices in song to God in thanks for all he has given us. I do hope that you can help me with our special music for our summer months. If not you, maybe someone you know will be interested. Rebecca M. Dorn How important it is to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes. Maya Angelou Festival of Motherly Love Sunday, May 13 th Our Festival of Motherly Love is a celebration of the many ways women demonstrate Christ s love for those who have needed someone a mother, an aunt, a sister, daughter, or caring friend - in a time of uncertainty. Does someone immediately come to your mind? Do you have a she-roe? Please invite her to join us for worship on Sunday, May 13 th and tell her how she has blessed your life. We will have treats for the ladies, and it promises to be a very special day of worship. We hope to see lots of ladies there! Festival of Fatherly Love - Sunday, June 17 th Men are often the quiet heroes in our lives. Is there one that has really been there for you? Maybe he listened to your concerns when you felt lost, or maybe he celebrated your smallest victories with you? Laughed (or cried) with you, protected and prayed for you? Maybe all of those things? We will celebrate the men who have been there for us during our Festival of Fatherly Love on Sunday, June 18 th. If you know someone who has made a difference in your live, invite him to join us for worship and a sweet treat, and let him know what a blessing he is!
