2 All Things Presbyterian Do you know Lenten history? According to Jennifer Lord, a professor in homiletics and liturgical studies at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, the time of Lent came into being after Easter was decided upon as an annual celebration and that, early on, the Christians celebrated Easter, celebrated resurrection weekly. The Council of Nicea, in 325, set Easter as an annual celebration tied to the timing of Passover, a link to the Jewish tradition of following the lunar calendar. Easter is set for the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Lord says that the development of Lent was to prepare people to be baptized on Easter. At that time, baptism was for adults, and Lent became 40 days of baptismal preparation, counting the days from Ash Wednesday to Easter, except for the Sundays in Lent, because Sunday is always resurrection liturgically, Lord says. In the Christian tradition, the number 40 is significant, being this great number, used again and again 40 in the Old Testament always is signifying time beyond time, this extraordinary time. (Excerpted from In Focus, The Presbyterian Outlook, February 16, 2015) Do you know about today s Presbyterian presence in the Caribbean? Aside from the idealized world of travel images and all-inclusive resorts, the rest of the Caribbean is a place where people strive for employment, dignity and education for their children and struggle against rampant violence, inequity and poverty. The U.S. Presbyterian Church in the Caribbean has ministered alongside its church partners for more than 100 years. Until the Cuban revolution, the Presbyterian Reformed Church in Cuba was part of the Presbyterian Church in the USA s Synod of New Jersey. The present-day united church in the Dominican Republic the Dominican Protestant Church recently celebrated its 90th anniversary as an independent church. That denomination s Presbyterian, Methodist and Moravian roots are a product of nineteenth-century mission. The U.S. church s mission engagement in these countries today includes evangelism and theological education, advocacy for reconciliation across many barriers and addressing root causes of poverty. For information about specific projects, go to page 34 of the issue from which this article was taken. (Excerpted from Horizons, January-February 2015) LAFFS will not meet during Lent. Our next lunch get-together will be in May. The March Women s Bible Study is being cancelled so that those interested can attend the discussions at the church. We will meet in April at Connie Huntington's house to cover the final chapter in our book. Also at the April study, all are asked to bring ideas to discuss for our next study. Taizé Service: Taizé services this month will be offered at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6 th, at MPC and on Friday, March 20 th, at Hanover Presbyterian Church Schedule: These will be held on Wednesdays at throughout Lent. March 4 First Christian; March 11 Christ Episcopal; March 18 Trinity United Methodist; March 25 Madison Presbyterian; April 1 First Baptist. Here's your chance to help the Membership ministry! We're soliciting suggestions for decorating the border of the Church Family bulletin board in Fellowship Hall (seasonal theme? 200 th Anniversary related? Use your imagination!). Turn your ideas in to Tim Busching or them to tdbuschin@gmail.com. You re Invited: The Madison Performing Arts Foundation is pleased to present Mike Raley, trombone, and Starla Raley, piano, in recital on Friday, March 27 th, at at Madison Presbyterian Church. Mike is a professor of History at Hanover College and Starla is the organist at Christ Episcopal Church. The concert is free, and the public is warmly invited to attend.

3 Special Lenten Services MUSICAL NOTES One of my favorite aspects of Lent is the profound choral music appropriate to the time. The St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach is widely considered to be one of the greatest musical masterpieces of all time. Indeed, it is considered by many to be one of the greatest works of human invention. The piece takes approximately three hours to perform and features the passion narrative according to the Gospel of Matthew, sung in recitative (unmetered declamatory solo singing, usually presenting prose text following the rhythm of the words). The words of the crowd are presented as choral numbers. Then arias (metered solo singing, usually presenting poetic text) and choruses are interjected, presenting extra-biblical texts as emotional reflection upon the action contained in the narrative. Below you will find a link to the English translation of the libretto, along with a youtube video of the entire performance. I certainly don t expect you to listen to the entire thing, although there are worse things you might do with three hours. I hope you might enjoy sampling a little of what is the equivalent to musicians of Shakespeare s plays to a thespian or the Mona Lisa to an artist. The text is here: The video is here: You are in my prayers. Jonathan Window Restoration We all have been watching the scaffolding as it makes its way around the sanctuary. Ever wonder about what it takes to clean and repair our windows? Interested in some insights into our windows and their peculiarities? On Sunday, March 8 th, Rhonda Deeg will be with us at to offer information, answer questions and explain our window restoration. Enjoy some fellowship and then gather in the sanctuary for an informative workshop.
