Berthier Stand ONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (1 John 1:8,9) P In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen P God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus hrist, our Savior and Lord. P Amen Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. 3

4 Kneel/Sit Silence for reflection and self-examination. P Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus hrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus hrist was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of hrist, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 6 FIRST READING Job 38:1-11 (John 1:1-5; olossians 3:16) A A reading from Job chapter thirty-eight. At the end of the book of Job, after Job and his companions have argued about the cause of the great suffering Job endures, God finally speaks. These verses begin that speech, which is a grand vision of creation, describing God s ordering of the cosmos and inviting Job to marvel at its beauty. Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: 2 "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. 4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? 8 "Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? 9 when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10 and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, 11 and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped'? A The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SEOND READING 2 orinthians 6:1 13 A A reading from 2 orinthians chapter six. Paul and his fellow workers experience great hardships and even rejection while carrying out their missionary work. Nevertheless, Paul continuously proclaims that God has not rejected us but is graciously working for our salvation. As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says, "At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you." See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! 3 We are putting no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, 4 but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5 beatings, 6

7 imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 6 by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, 7 truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8 in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; 9 as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. 11 We have spoken frankly to you orinthians; our heart is wide open to you. 12 There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. 13 In return I speak as to children open wide your hearts also. A The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Stand GOSPEL ALAMATION (John 6:68) GOSPEL Mark 4:35-41 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the fourth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus calming of the storm on the sea reveals his power over evil, since the sea represents evil and chaos. The boat on the sea is a symbol of the church and invites us to trust God amid life s turbulence. 35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side." 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, do you 7

8 not care that we are perishing?" 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" P The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O hrist. HYMN OF THE DAY Precious Lord, Take My Hand ELW 773 (Red Hymnal) SERMON WHEN GOD SLEEPS Text: Mark 4:35-41 APOSTLES REED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus hrist, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERESSION (1 Timothy 2:1,2) A With the whole people of God in hrist Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation. Kneel/Sit for a brief silence of reflection. A We pray for the church. Still its storms, calm its fears, and make it an evangelizing witness to your power and justice. God of mercy, 8 hear our prayer.

9 A We give you thanks for the blessings of your creation. Help us find ways to reverse the damage we have done through carelessness and inattentiveness. God of mercy, hear our prayer. A We pray for all who desire peace but experience conflict, and for those who hope for faith in the middle of the whirlwind. God of mercy, hear our prayer. A We give you thanks for fathers and for all who provide fatherly care and love. Bless and keep them, now and always. God of mercy, hear our prayer. A We pray for all those in need: the hungry, the homeless, those in prison, the oppressed, victims of war, and the sick and dying (especially). God of mercy, hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. A We pray for this assembly, its presence in this community, and its connections to the world. God of mercy, hear our prayer. A We give you thanks for all who have shared the gospel and cared for its language (especially Onesimus Nesib, translator and evangelist, whom we commemorate today). Strengthened by their witness, help us to share your saving story. God of mercy, hear our prayer. P Loving God, you are near to us when we cry out to you. Into your embrace we commend all for whom we pray, through hrist and by the power of your Spirit. Amen SHARING OF THE PEAE (Matthew 5:23-24) P The peace of hrist be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of hrist's peace, and may say, "Peace be with you," or similar words. OFFERING 9

GREAT THANKSGIVING (Psalm 136) THE PREFAE (Spoken by the Pastor) P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: (Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9) 10

11 WORDS OF INSTITUTION (1 orinthians 11:23-26) P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Do this for the remembrance of me. THE LORD'S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9-13) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. 18 SWAMPED There is a beautiful, simple French prayer that translated into English implores: "Holy God, protect me. The ocean is so big and my boat is so small." The world is big and overwhelming. The material possessions we gather around us for protection are clearly inadequate and often add to the problem. We are bombarded by information. We shiver at the word "terrorism," because we have seen what it can do. We are accessible to others every minute of the day because of the mobile devices. Finding an escape, finding peace, is becoming more and more challenging. Where is the cushion in the bottom of our boats where we can lay our heads and sleep in full faith of God's presence and protection? Instead we panic. Then Jesus commands the storm, his disciples, and us: "Peace! Be still!" (Mark 4:39). Suddenly, all around us is "a dead calm." Well, if there is anything that frightens us more than stormy seas, it is a dead calm. Now what? How am I supposed to sail my little boat with no wind? We've all said it. Someone asks us politely how life is going. We roll our eyes and sigh, "I'm swamped!" Being swamped is proof that we are important, indispensable. Our time is precious. Our calendars are full. The socially acceptable response to that is a matching eye roll and sigh, "I know what you mean." The caring response can be, "Tell me. What is it that is swamping you?" What is battering your little boat? We can be that cushion of faith and caring for others. We can say, "Peace, my friend. Be still. God loves and protects you. I am here to bail water with you."
