1 Page 3 MAY 27, 2018 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a vibrant community of disciples who proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to all. LaCuesta s Quest Do you ever wish life was simple? I certainly do. So much uncertainty so many choices so much work required to keep relationships healthy so much worry so many things that can go wrong so many unknowns. Yes, I do wish life was simpler! Do we wish the same of God? Have we somehow made God too complicated? Now, those of you who have at some point in your life read or studied Catholic theology might remember that theologians often talk about God as being simple. However, they are using that word in a much different way, a way that refers to the unity and indivisibility and integrity of God. When Catholic scholars call God simple they are trying to emphasize that God can t be divided up into parts or that the attributes of God aren t really different thingsthat sort of thing. God simply is. But what I m talking about is something different. Maybe the word I m looking for is simplistic. Do we have a simplistic understanding of God? Do we believe that what we know or understand about God gives us a complete picture? Do we talk about God as if he acts and thinks just like us? Is God simply another being among all the other beings in this world? Is this really who we believe God to be? Or is this even who we want him to be?! Maybe you ve really never thought about it. We often do that with things which are really hard to wrap our minds around. But today, Holy Trinity Sunday, invites us to do precisely thatto consider what we truly believe about God, to reflect on and reexamine how we see God, to contemplate who we understand God to be. The word simplistic doesn t even come close. There are two things that are important for us to remember and accept as we struggle to articulate who God is (and what he is not). First, everything we claim to know about God, every small understanding, every peek into the life of God, is possible ONLY because God has chosen to reveal himself to us (through creation, or Sacred Scripture, or the Church, or most perfectly in the person of Jesus Christ). God always speaks first. Anything we come to know about God is because he allows and desires it. Without this self revelation (on the part of God) we would be in darkness. And secondly, as creatures, we will always be limited in what we can know about God particularly in our use (Continued on page 2)
2 Page Page 2 4 (LaCuesta s Quest continued from front page) of language to express the inexpressible. Our words will always fall short, will always paint an incomplete picture of God. We should never be so bold to presume that our words adequately explain who God is. There is always more. GOD is always MORE. And yet, we try. And we shouldfor our attempt to know God is an act of faith. The better we understand who God is, the better we will understand who we are, and understand what constitutes a Godcentered life. Put simply: knowing God helps us become more Godlike. God became like us so that we could become more like him. That s the kind of God we have! You know, as a child I used to always make sure I didn t eat too much of the main course at dinner. I always wanted to make sure I left room for the best partdessert. Of course, Mom had a rule that we had to finish our dinner in order to have whatever sweets she had for us (which meant that I had to be creative!). I would spread the food out on my plate or spill some over the edge or take as little as possible, making sure I had room for whatever wonderful stuff was waiting for us. This may seem like a trivial analogy, but I think it can help make my point: Whatever we say about God, however we understand him, whatever beautiful ways we try to describe something beyond all understandingwe must always leave room, always allow for God to continue to reveal himself to us (through circumstances and other people, through the world around us and every created thing in it, and in the silence of our hearts). Knowing God is a lifelong journey, one that begins at conception and continues through life and on into eternity. Friends, the best part is always waiting for usgod inviting us to know him more deeply, love him more completely, and serve him more faithfully. And so we keep the mystery that is God as we struggle to find the words when talking about him. And we give heartfelt thanks to GOD the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Amen. Fr. Don A. Moved by the Holy Trinity, do we express this discipleship in a spirit of evangelization by welcoming home our brothers and sisters who have left the faith, and those who do not know Christ? The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite, either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day. The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the Faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, # ). Anyone conscious of a grave sin must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before coming to Communion. (CCC, #1385)
5 Page 3 5 A Prayer for OLMC Graduates Heavenly Father, Surround those who are graduating with your grace. Bless them with hope so that they move into the future with eager and open hearts. Help them to put the knowledge, skills and insights gained through their education to use for the good of all humankind. Inspire them to believe in the goodness of life even when faced with challenges and difficulties. As they commence with their lives, may they grow ever more grateful and wise. All of this we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen. Congratulations Class of 2018! Food Pantry Our emergency food pantry is in need of restocking. Can you help with any of the items listed below? Please leave your donation on the pew by the Parish Offices. Shampoo & conditioner Tooth paste & tooth brushes Deodorant Canned meats (tuna, beef, chicken) Pasta sauce Spaghetti noodles Canned fruit Packaged potatoes Boxed rice Jelly Tomato soup Mushroom soup Baked beans Canned ravioli Mac & cheese T hen Jesus approached and said to them, "All p o w e r i n h e a v e n a n d on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Mt 28:18-19 Memorial Day On Monday, May 28, the Parish Office and the Religious Ed Office will be closed for the holiday. You are invited to join us for the 9:00 AM Mass, where we will pray especially for those who died defending our lives, our liberty, and our pursuit of happiness. OLMC St. Vincent de Paul Thank you for all you do to support us in so many ways. Below is a recent list of the people in our community that we were able to help in the last two weeks through your generosity. OLMC St. Vincent de Paul was able to help a woman whose husband recently had a stroke, and at this time is unable to return to work. Assistance was given in the form of a gas card, a food gift card, food from OLMC Emergency Food Pantry and help with two bills. One of the home visiting teams recently assisted a woman living in an apartment with no refrigerator or stove. She already had a microwave. The OLMC SVDP team was able to purchase a dorm size refrigerator for her. They also assisted her with a partial payment towards her rent so she could use her money to obtain the necessary documents she needed to claim her widow benefits. Another home visiting team recently assisted a lady and her nine yearold son. She needed help with her past due electric bill. In order to get back on a payment plan that she could afford, OLMC SVDP was able to pay the down payment she needed to be placed on that payment plan. Catholic Services Appeal We re off to a good start. This past week 51 parishioners pledged an additional $10,775! Between these first two weeks and additional gifts made online, we are at $25,369, still leaving over $63,000 to make it to our goal. Looking at the total is a bit intimidating, but if every parish household made a pledge or gift, we can easily reach our goal. Please prayerfully consider your gift today. If you did not received your 2018 CSA pledge card in the mail, please stop by the Hospitality Table at the back of church after Mass or call the Parish Office, Again, we remind you to be mindful of the pledge card s new design, and please DO NOT SEPERATE your pledge card. We need you to RETURN THE ENTIRE CARD.
