1 OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Page 3 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a vibrant community of disciples who proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to all. LaCuesta s Quest Well, five weeks and nearly seventy verses later we ve come to the end of our journey through Chapter 6 of St. John s Gospel, the Bread of Life Discourse. Jesus has been saying a lot of things that are really tough to understand, difficult to wrap our minds around. The disciples did a good job of asking questions to try to get Jesus to clarify what he was talking about. But the more he talked, the more confused they became. Finally, they began verbalizing what many of them had been thinking all along: This saying is hard; who can accept it? "And they were right! After all, Jesus had been talking at length about being the Bread of Life and the importance of feeding on him and stuff like that. No wonder they were confused! On the surface, their question was pointing out their sincere difficulty in understanding what Jesus was saying. It wasn t so much that they were expressing their objections. Rather, they really were simply struggling to figure out what he was trying to say. If this was taking place today, I m sure the question we would be asking one another would be, Does anybody get what he s talking about?! Of course, this same question could have been asked by them in other encounters with Jesus. In reality, almost nothing Jesus ever said was easy. Almost everything he said (as recorded in Scripture) posed a challengea challenge to the way things had always been done, a challenge to the easy way out. And while many who encountered Jesus were more than happy to accept him as a friend or teacher, many were simply not prepared to get on board with everything he was saying. Sound familiar? You know, in many ways, we have an easier time accepting some of the incredible things Jesus said (or the incredible things our Catholic faith teaches) than we do accepting some of the more clear and direct things that came from his mouth. In other words, it s easier to accept things that don t seem to demand much from us. But accept things that actually make us act differently and think differently and see other people differently? Suddenly we re not as eager to get on board. Turn the other cheek Go the extra mile Give our second coat to someone in need Take care of the stranger in need (even someone we don t even like!) Forgive seventy times seven times Love our enemies It s funny. Most of us have little trouble in accepting the Incarnation, or the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, or the Trinity. In some ways, we can treat them simply as words, give our assent, and go on living as we always have. But don t hold grudges? Don t store up riches? Lay down our lives for our friends? C mon, Jesus couldn t possibly mean all those things he said, could he? These sayings are hard; who can accept them? (Continued on page 2)

2 Page Page 2 4 OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL (LaCuesta s Quest continued from front page) Today, we are invited to once again examine our commitment to being a follower of Jesus (or lack thereof). We re asked to take a long hard look as to whether or not we are really buying whatever it is that Jesus is selling. And this recommitment is something we must engage in over and over again. We saw an example of that in the First Reading (cf. Josh 24:12a,1517,18a) at Mass today in which Joshua, after leading the Israelites across the Jordan and into the Promised Land, wants to make sure their hearts and minds (their very selves!) are still committed to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It had been a really long and difficult journey. Joshua wanted to make sure that the people hadn t given up on God. Have we? That s a tough question, but one whose answer makes all the difference in the world. Is it too hard to forgive the unforgiveable? Is it too hard to give a lot when we have a little? Is it too hard to reconcile with those who have wronged us? Is it too hard to turn the other cheek love our enemies lay down our lives for others? My friends, may we have the faith and courage to not only echo what Joshua said long ago but mean it too: As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord! Fr. Don A. Many didn t believe. Jesus says, It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. To this St. Paul adds: The Spirit too helps us in our weakness. (Rom. 8:26) And so there were those who accept the Word of God who has the words of eternal life. When our faith weakens we should ask ourselves, Do I believe? Then we should turn to the Church, the Body of Christ who extends a kind welcome to those who are weak in faith. (Rom. 14:1) Watch for news from the Faith Formation Commission! The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite, either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day. The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the Faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, # ). Anyone conscious of a grave sin must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before coming to Communion. (CCC, #1385)
