1 Saint John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy part of Saint Robert Lawrence Catholic Academy Trust The Friday Letter Edition No 151 Friday 17 June 2016 [Follow us on and on We pray for all whose lives have been touched by tragedy, whether by accident or a deliberate act. For those who mourn, immerse them in your love and lead them through this darkness into your arms, and light. For those who comfort, be in both the words they use and all that's left unspoken; fill each heart with love. We ask this through Jesus Christ, whose own suffering brought us life, here and for eternity. Amen John Birch Dates for your Diary Academic Year Monday 27 June Inset Day 5 Tuesday 26 July Break up for Summer Holiday (Early finish at 12.30) Academic Year Monday 05 September Inset Day 1 Tuesday 06 September Inset Day 2 Wednesday 07 September Students Return (Term 1) Sports Success at Saint John Houghton Congratulations Freya Congratulations to Freya Barry in Year 7 who returned to school on Monday with her silver medal she won at the European Deaf Tennis Championships. Despite the forecast of rain, we arrived to sunshine and warm temperatures. We began the week with teambuilding and orienteering activities which took place in the local area. Tuesday to Thursday students took part in a range of outdoor education activities including canoeing on Derwent water, climbing and abseiling at Wodens face, gorge scrambling in Honister as well as completing Via Ferratta at Honister slate mine. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, all students camped out for the evening in a midge invested campsite. They cooked their evening meal and either assembled their tent or took it down. The week finished with a small awards ceremony with night prayer and short affirmation.

8 All boy s Act of Worship On Thursday the 16 June, we had an 'All boys' Act of Worship to try and address some of the issues as to why boys are underachieving in school. We were lucky enough to have Mr Devine as a guest speaker. Mr Devine is a parent to a pupil in Year 9, but is also a physiotherapist at Nottingham Forest Football Club. He told the boys about his former career as a professional footballer; his role as a physiotherapist and gave them an insight to what it is like to perform at the top level. The Act of Worship highlighted the importance of hard work and will hopefully inspire the boys in our school to work to the best of their ability and be a great success. Chaplaincy Department Let us pray together: Lord God, we are all Learners in your kingdom. Help us as we journey together to support one another, to share our lives, and to work to see your kingdom come, In Jesus' name. Amen. Oasis Team Rachel would like to thank Year 9 for their wonderful manners in Act of Worship this week. Please accept the invitation to become part of the Saint John Houghton Oasis Team, you need to write a letter to Rachel saying why you want to be on the team, what experience you may have and you will need a reference from an adult, the deadline is Wednesday 22 June 2016 at 1.15pm. Please see Rachel if you have any questions or concerns. Rachel would like to thank you for listening and reacting to the 'make a splash and save water' Act of Worship. We have given over 200 raffle tickets away, find out if you have won a bottle of water in next week s Friday Letter.
