3 Statement of Purpose Harvest International is a tri-fold ministry dedicated to the fulfillment of the Word of God, which commands us to be witnesses of His saving grace! 1. Acts 1:8 tells us to be witnesses to the remotest parts of the earth. Our mission field is Haiti, the poorest country spiritually, as well as physically, in the Western hemisphere. 2. Matthew 28:19-20 tells us to make disciples. Harvest International helps schools which are educating the children of Haiti spiritually, in order to give them a firm foundation and to make them disciples and then academically to help them build on that foundation. 3. Psalm 82:3-4 tells us to Defend the poor and the fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and the needy; rid them out of the hand of the wicked. We have set up programs to care for the feeding and clothing of the poor and the fatherless. We also minister to those who are afflicted with various diseases. We believe in: Doctrinal Statement 01. Thou shalt always demand more of thyself than of others. 8. Thou shalt prepare to serve those less fortunate than thyself. 9. Thou shalt not take martyr pills. 10. Thou shalt not forget to PRAY.

5 Preparing for Ministry acdefghijklabcde It is our desire that your trip to Haiti be one of the greatest events in your life, next to being saved. Because of our commitment to you in this area, we have devoted this section of our manual to help you achieve this goal. It is essential that you understand what is about to happen to you and the process which you are going to walk through. It has been our example that the areas that we have dealt with below are the areas God deals with in most people s lives as they submit to Him. Your first experience will be one of extreme brokenness before the Lord as you witness the plight of your brothers and sisters in the Lord who live in Haiti. Brokenness causes us to examine our devotion to God. A powerful example of wholehearted devotion to God is the prayer Jesus prayed on the Mount of Olives, Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done. (Luke 22:42) Jesus was facing extreme anguish as events were beginning to be set into motion which He knew would lead Him to a cross. In complete brokenness, He relinquished all the claim He had over His own body, and yielded it to His Father in obedience. Are we that devoted to our Heavenly Father? Have we abandoned whatever claims we hold on our own lives? Can we say we have obeyed the command of Romans 12:1-2 in offering ourselves as a living sacrifice? Brokenness convicts us in areas of weakness. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24) As our hearts begin to draw nearer to His by our desiring to be more devoted to Him, we will begin to feel convicted of certain areas in our life that need to be cleansed by the washing of the Holy Spirit. It is crucial at this point that we take a deep look at our walk with the Lord and at our testimony and honestly admit before the Lord tendencies to still walk in the flesh and not in faith. As He exposes motives and brings to light potential dangers in our life that could lead us to sin, we must, in prayer, yield these areas to the Lord. We need to ask for His forgiveness and for His strength to put aside these weak areas in our life. Brokenness creates in us a renewed desire for integrity. As the hands of the Master begin to root out the flaws and imperfections in our life, we will then begin to experience more of His peace and joy in our daily walk. This results in our desiring an even more intimate fellowship with Him. As this happens, our aim is now to walk closer to the Lord and to spend more time in prayer and in the Word. Our focus will be set on Him, and on fulfilling the dreams and desires He holds for our life. Our vision is narrowed down until only the cross is kept in sight. All other distractions and confusions in our life are brought under the Lordship of Christ. We reap many benefits from the promise that A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. (Psalm 51:17b) After experiencing brokenness, you will be humbled. Humility seeks to glorify God, and not flesh. In Luke 1, the angel Gabriel comes to Mary and informs her she has found favor with God and will give birth to His very own Son. Mary displays a wonderful example of humility to us all through the words she chose to answer Gabriel. I am the Lord s servant. (verse 37)

6 My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant... for the Mighty One has done great things for me- holy is His Name. (Luke 2:46-49) Mary s focus was intent on glorifying God, not on exalting her own self. She was given the honor of bearing the Savior of the world, yet she did not respond in self-adulation. Humility sees the need to trust in the Lord, and not in the flesh. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 74:26) Our trust in the Lord should not rest on how comfortable or secure we are in our circumstances. Haitians do not have money which enables them to buy food and store it for several weeks. Even if they did have the money, there is little or no electricity in the rural areas of Haiti so they do not have refrigerators. Think of how often groceries are brought into your home. You never have to really pray that God will provide- it s so easy to take it for granted that groceries always have been there for you. Christian Haitians do not have this luxury. They realize that Jesus Christ is their only provider and supplier of all their needs. Daily they ask for His provision and trust that He alone will be their portion- even when they have no food. Humility is selfless giving, and emptying one s self in utter abandon. The humility of Christ is what every Christian is commanded to imitate. Philippians 2 is a wonderful example of selfless giving. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient to death on the cross. ( vv. 5-8) How can we incorporate this type of humility into our daily lives? It is possible through obeying the commands of the One Who so lovingly set the ultimate example of true and unselfish humility. Read the following verses and ask the Lord to show you how you can incorporate such true humility in your life and heart. Romans 12:10 Galatians 5:13 Ephesians 5:21 Philippians 2:3 1 Peter 5:5-6 Brokenness and humility will produce a servant s heart. A servant s heart is pure. The dictionary definition of the word pure is a state of being free from foreign elements. As Christians, things of the world that are not pleasing and honoring to the Lord are things we should consider foreign elements. Scripture warns us of having nothing to do with these foreign elements that can pollute our minds and stain our hearts. Romans 12:2 says, Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. When we take Philippians 1:8 to heart, we are able to renew our minds and keep our thoughts centered on Christ. When that happens, our heart will display a purity that is not tainted or tarnished by any unclean thing. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. A servant s heart is holy. As daughters and sons of the King, we are commanded by the King Himself to be holy. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy. (1 Peter 1:15) A holy heart is a sacred heart. It is separated or set apart for the Lord and for His service. God s eyes are too pure to look upon sin and tolerate any impurity

7 in our hearts (Habakkuk 1:3). Knowing this should push us to continually strive to be more like Christ, Who is the perfect example of holiness. There are specific things that the Bible lists when referring to the person who lives his life for human desires. 1 Peter 4:3 gives just such a list. Perhaps there are things in your life that are not on that list but that are just as displeasing to our Heavenly Father. Below is a guideline for prayerfully considering any area in your life that the Holy Spirit may be convicting you of: = Is it helpful- physically, spiritually and mentally? 1 Corinthians 6:12 = Does it bring me under its power? 1 Corinthians 6:12 = Does it hurt others? 1 Corinthians 8:13 = Does it glorify God? 1 Corinthians 10:31 A servant s heart is compassionate. The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. (Psalm 145:9) Compassion is a deep feeling of mercy and grace that moves us to extend a kindness to another. Compassion is feeling the pain of another willingly. Compassion usually involves a certain amount of self-sacrifice. Time, talents or possessions must be given if comfort, encouragement or healing is to be received by the person who is in pain. During the three years of Jesus public ministry on earth, we are told in the Bible that He was often moved with compassion on the crowds. Matthew 9: 36, When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. See also Matthew 14:14; 15:32. Jesus was moved not only by crowds but also by individuals. (Matthew 20:34) In Haiti, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the crowd of people who are in such desperate need. Pray for the ability to look at each individual as a person and focus on the needs of the individual, instead of the multitude at large. When you have dealt with each of the areas above, the results are that you will be as of one mind with the other members of your team to Haiti. This will make you a more useful vessel to the Lord. The issues that we have dealt with in this booklet are things that you should strive to incorporate in your daily walk as you interact with family, co-workers, friends and brothers and sisters in Christ and also with those whom the Lord might lead into your path. Prayer is a vital part of your spiritual preparation. Spend lots of time alone in prayer before your Heavenly Father. Talk to your immediate family and ask them to pray for you. Give them specifics as the Lord reveals them to you. Seek your pastor s counsel and ask him to pray for and with you. Ask also for prayers of the church body where you worship. Get brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for you while you are gone. A few things they can pray for are: = Filling of the Holy Spirit = Boldness = Relationships with other team members = Protection for those at home = Travel logistics = Spiritual, emotional and physical health acdefghijklabcde

8 Clothing Requirements Our desire is to be a witness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ while we are in Haiti. In order to do that to the best of our ability, you need to be aware that there are a few things in the Haitian culture different than in our own. Dress is one of those things. In the Haitian culture, the way a person dresses says a lot to the people. Keeping that in mind, we would ask you to follow a few simple rules of dress while we are guests in Haiti. We ask that all women wear modest clothing. Shorts are okay as long as they are of a modest length. For the men, T-shirts or hats with any kind of questionable advertising is strongly discouraged, i.e., beer, or other ads that are not honoring to the Lord. When in doubt, leave it out. Since Haitian men do not wear earrings, we ask that our male team members do likewise. For Medical Teams: If you have any scrubs please bring them! Keep this in mind: Dress as if you were meeting with Jesus! Everyone: Comfortable for travel day. Sweater/light jacket. (Evenings are cool in the mountains) 4-6 changes of clothes. (Clothes which you can mix and match) Sleep wear Underwear Hand Sanitizer / Wet Wipes Each person is required to pack a box of latex gloves, 1 bottle each of betadine and peroxide. (For medical teams only) Ladies: You will need some comfortable walking shoes for your trip. Tennis shoes are the best for the terrain in Haiti. You may want to leave the shoes in Haiti after the trip so bring an extra pair to wear home. Shoes and socks are to be worn to prevent blisters. Sandals may not offer protection from environmental hazards, but are allowed for travel days and evenings. A hip pack is almost a necessity. You will not have anywhere to leave your personal belongings such as your passport, money or other items, so a hip-pack is perfect. A modest, one piece swimsuit is required at the project site for bathing. There are no shower facilities at most sites where we work. Leave your jewelry at home. You will need one nice dress for church on Sunday. Men: Your dress must also be modest. Jeans are always acceptable and preferred if you are going to be on a medical trip. Tennis shoes are the best for the terrain. Socks and shoes are to be worn to prevent blisters. A hip-pack is also highly recommended for men. A swimsuit for bathing is required. You will need one nice shirt and one pair of long pants for church on Sunday.

9 Luggage Requirements Baggage regulations change frequently so please check with your carrier for current restrictions. All of your luggage will be inspected by Customs officials upon arrival and is a part of the procedure at the airport in Haiti. Please make sure you have your luggage claim check available as you leave the airport as they will check to ensure that you have the correct bag. All of your luggage may be inspected by a Customs official upon arrival in Miami as well. There are certain food items which you may NOT bring back to the U.S. Check with team leader before you purchase any food items to bring back home. Necessary Items To Pack Bible (Journal & Pen) Passport (required for entry into Haiti) Medicines (any that you feel you will need while on the trip...ie: aspirin, dramamine ) Flashlight (extra batteries for flashlight) Waterless Hand-Sanitizer or Wipes Snacks (see foods) Plastic water bottle Camera (extra batteries for camera) Sunscreen/Suntan lotion Deep Woods OFF or Skin so Soft (or other mosquito repellent) Towels, wash cloth, plastic bag (for wet stuff and laundry) Toiletries (shower shoes, liquid soap, toothpaste and brush, travel size kleenex packs work well in place of toilet paper, personal items) Cash - $50.00 to $ for souvenirs and gifts. Work Gloves (building teams only) Remember that you must carry in all needed items. There are no guarentees you can pick up/ replace supplies in country.

10 Food A continental breakfast and one dinner each day will be provided. You are responsible for your own snacks ie: crackers, peanutbutter, energy bars and nuts, ect. Ensure that your snacks will sustain your energy and are able to be sealed tightly. There will be no refrigeration. We will supply all the drinking water you will need for the entire trip. It is suggested that you bring flavor packets which you will be able to mix. Haitian coffee (quite strong) will also be available in the morning, however you may bring instant coffee or tea of your choice. Hot water will be available. The Haitian children don t eat everything we eat. They do like to peek and look at what we are doing. You may want to bring a bag of lollipops or small boxes of raisins to pass out to them sometime during the trip. Be sure and check with the missionary in charge before giving out food or gifts so as not to draw a crowd of people. Children also like bubbles, balloons, barrettes & hair accessories and any other trinkets you would like to share with them. Do s Do carry your own personal medication Do wear sunglasses, a straw hat, sun lotion, and chap stick. We will be in a hot, bright climate. Do remember that the KEY WORD in Haiti is FLEXIBILITY. Life goes on at a different pace and goods are not always readily available. Consequently, things do not always go as planned. Above all, be gracious. Do feel free to call on someone to help you share your faith with those we will come in contact with. Do get to know members of the team. Don ts Don t brush your teeth, or rinse your toothbrush with tap water. Culligan water is available. Don t eat any food that has not been approved by a team leader. Most places that Harvest personnel will take you to eat in Haiti have been approved by the staff and are safe. Check with your team leader or missionary before you eat anything. Don t forget to PRAY, as often as possible, for the Lord to work in the team as well as in the people of Haiti. Don t give anyone your home address or phone number. We have had occasions where people you meet will call you collect and ask you for money. If you want to bless someone on a continuing basis, notify one of the Harvest staff, and we will share with you how to bless that person. Don t promise anyone anything you cannot do at that very moment. In Haiti a phrase such as Let me think about it or I have to check is construed as being a done deal. To avoid any embarrassment or hard feelings, don t promise anything you can t do at that very moment. Guidlines for Relationships Between Young Men and Women As young men and women, your desire should be to represent the Lord in a manner that would bring honor and glory to Him. In that regard, we would ask that you refrain from any romantic relationships or physical contact with other team members or new Haitian friends that might be offensive to the other members of the team or to the Haitian community. No young men are allowed in young women s rooms. No young women are allowed in young men s rooms. As witnesses for Christ, the Lord Jesus calls us to be like Him. Harvest International does not want to misrepresent Christ to the Haitian people in any way.

13 Obligations of Foreigners in Haiti Article 23 Every foreigner entering the national territory of Haiti will present a disembarkation card on his arrival, containing the necessry information for his identity, according to the procedure requested by the Immigration Service. These cards are supplied by the agent of the air or sea carrier. Article 24 The officer of the Immigration Service will attach a stamped copy of the disembarkation card mentioned in article 23, to the passport of each visitor admitted to the country. This identity paper will be kept during the stay of the visitor in Haiti and returned to the immigration officer at the moment of departure. Article 25 Every foreigner admitted as a visitor must possess the transport tickets paid to the next destination or a return ticket. Also, his passport must be valid for a period of six months. Article 29 Whatever type of visa the foreigner possesses he shall present at the moment of embarkation his currently valid passport containing a Haitian visa issued during the preceding ninety (90) days. Article 30 Within fifteen (15) days from his arrival on the national territory, the foreigner with resident status shall request a Residence Permit. He will also specify the hotel, guest-house or private house where he is staying. Article 44 The duration of an authorized stay for a visitor shall not exceed three (3) months, except where stated otherwise and in writing by the Immigration Service. Article 45 The foreigner admitted as a visitor, who due to circumstances for appraisal to the Immigration Service, cannot leave the country within the allotied time, will apply for prolongation within 24 hours before the expiry of his first allowance of time. Article 46 The foreigner staying temporarily in Haiti and bearing 2 visitor s visa is not authorized to indulge in any commercial activity during his stay. Commerical representatives, however, with established agents in Haiti, are not subject to this restriction. Article 48 Generally, the foreigner who is admitted to Haitian territory by virtue of whatever visa, shall conform to the prescriptions of Haitian laws, refrain from perturbing public order and present his identity papers or travel documents to officials fo the Immigration Service or to forces of public order whenever requested. A foreigner who refuses to produce his papers, with the refusal duly certified by a report or written statement from an authorized official, shall be invited to leave country. Article 59 Every foreigner subject to the visa formality who disebarks without thsi visa shall purely and simply be returned to his port of embarkation at the costs of the air, sea or land carrier company. In every case the transport company concerned will be liable for a fine of five thousand gourdes (Gdes 5,000.00) to be imposed by the correctional tribunal, Immediately and without postponement or turns.
