1 Dr. Cindy Parker, Pastor Ginger Willetts, Editor Volume 48, No. 6 Greetings, Beloved! As I write this article I am preparing to watch my youngest daughter walk across the stage and receive her high school diploma from Sedona Red Rock High School. It is difficult to believe this is the same child who, a little over a year ago, left her friends and everything she knew in PA to travel over 2000 miles to live in Sedona. I don t think any of us could have imagined how much her life would change or how much she would change. Her journey has transformed her from a high school student to a student ambassador for the United States! She is ready to begin a new chapter in her life which will take her to unknown lands where she will meet new friends and celebrate new experiences. I m sure she will be transformed yet again by her time in Sweden and I will hardly recognize her when she returns to Arizona next year. Transformation is not something that just happens, but it is a gift of God according to the Rev. Dr. Barbara Lundblad. I love that! How often are we afraid to try something new because we are afraid? Afraid of failure, afraid of judgment, afraid of losing what we hold dear? I can t tell you how many things I haven t tried in the course of my life because I was paralyzed by the fear of failure. What about you? Fax: Website: address: info@churchoftheredrocks.com JUNE 2018 The same is true for us. When we experience Jesus through the Scriptures, or through praise, or through prayer, or through the love of another, we too are transformed. We cannot stay the same. All because we are beloved by GOD! What is God calling YOU to do? What is God calling US to do as God s church? For the sake of the gospel? So that others might experience Christ? Travel to foreign lands? Meet new friends? Stay here in Sedona and build new homes? We just might find out we are the ones who are transformed! Your partner on the journey, Pastor Cindy Change is necessary in life for growth. We can t grow without change. The same is true in the church. Barbara reminds us, Christian traditions are filled with stories of change-not change for the sake of change, but for the sake of the gospel. For the sake of the gospel we are called to change, to transform. When people in the Bible meet up with Jesus they are transformed-it is impossible to stay the same once Jesus has touched you, or taught you, or healed you, or even talked to you.

Your delegates were: Pastor Cindy Parker, Larry Parker, Joy Stouder, Ed and Melanie Voboril. Pastor Cindy, Larry and Joy attended the Faith Rooted Organizing Workshop on Thursday, April 19 th. Rev. Alexia Salvatierra led this biblical-based workshop that explained how to not only give direct help to the needy, but also how to organize for Community Development and Advocacy for broader system change. She reminded them of the divine purpose of government (Psalm 72) and taught them two main strategies to organize for change. The strategies were serpent power and dove power (Matthew 10:18). Both strategies are useful, but dove power really engages spiritual power. On Friday they broke into various workshops. Pastor Cindy, Ed, Melanie, Larry, and Joy each attended different sessions. The workshops included Discerning your Kairos Issues, Spirituality of Activism, Seven Proven Ways to Increase Giving, Resolutions Q & A, ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) Training, Grassroots Resistance and our Congregations: Bridging the Gap, and Widening the Welcome. Our delegates enjoyed a banquet Friday night where the teens who had attended the March in D.C. were honored. The worship sessions on both Friday and Saturday morning included a meaningful time of communion.

4 Library Corner The EDGE Every Friday morning in Classroom A at 10:15 am. Beginning on June 1 "The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World" By the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and Douglas Abrams Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships or, as they would say, because of them they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. This book offers a rare opportunity to experience Archbishop Tutu and the Dalai Lama's astonishing and unprecedented week together, from the first embrace to the final good-bye. Listen as they explore the Nature of True Joy and confront each of the Obstacles of Joy from fear, stress, and anger to grief, illness, and death. They then offer us the Eight Pillars of Joy, which provide the foundation for lasting happiness. Throughout, they include stories, wisdom, and science. Finally, they share their daily Joy Practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives. This group is open to anyone that would like to join them. The CRR Book Club meets the 3 rd Friday each month at 1:00 p.m. Sunday School & Nursery 9:30 a.m. Children will begin time in the Sanctuary, then join Ms. Shandra for time in the Nursery and Sunday School Rooms. For some, it is the beginning of a new season, a chance to reshape their vision and see where they are with their new year's resolutions. What better time is there than the middle of the year to take stock! June is the month of changeover in real physical climatic terms too. In the Northern hemisphere, summer has begun while the Southern hemisphere winter has begun. DID YOU KNOW On the 6 th of June in 1872, one woman, Susan Anthony charted the way for the development of one of the most fundamental rights that any citizen is able to exercise. Most of us take it as a given. Some of us do not even exercise it, yet some people fought hard for it...the right to vote. It was a time when women were not legally permitted to vote, but Susan Anthony brought together a group of women to test their status as citizens by voting in the same manner as men. Although they were arrested and fined for it, that initial step paved the way for the recognition of women's right to vote! June's birthstones: pearl, alexandrite and moonstone Birth Flowers: rose and honeysuckle Zodiac signs: Gemini (May 21 - June 20) Cancer (June 21 - July 22) CHURCH LIBRARY ----->Things to Know: Coming soon...book Spinner will display selections from the church's book club. 7 Education Opportunities COMMUNITY TALK at THE CHURCH OF THE RED ROCKS Bible Study beginning on June June Community Talk & Potluck Dinner Thursday, June 7 Potluck begins at 5:30 p.m. (Note times!!!) Presentation begins at 6:15 p.m. The Naked Truth Triumph over Trauma Speaker: Zushka Biros "I wasn't supposed to be here," Zushka said, as we sat at a little table in the corner of Macy's Coffee Shop in downtown Flagstaff, Arizona. "There's literally no reason why I should be alive." Zushka Biros is a recovered anorexic, a survivor of rape and abuse, but her story doesn't end there. "Trauma comes in all different flavors," she goes on to tell us. "It isn't immune to economic status, your ethnic or religious background. It doesn't care what type of family you come from or how rich or poor you are." She goes deep into exposing her demons, her blunt honesty is impressive. She doesn't sugarcoat anything. What is surprising is that Zushka has processed her tragedies in a unique sort of way - through photography. "I picked up a camera 6 months ago. After modeling for a few years, I decided I wanted to be on the other side of the lens. Starting with landscapes and posed models, my addiction for photography began. But then, something unexpected happened." Join us at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 7 th for The Naked Truth - Triumph Over Trauma. Pastor Cindy will be leading a Bible study this summer on the book of Esther. Esther is the only book in the Bible not to mention the name of God. But that is not to say that God was absent! God s presence permeates so much of the story of Esther. Why don t you join us for encouragement on the ways God continues to be present in our lives as well! This study will be offered at The Church of the Red Rocks (in Painted Cliffs Hall) on: Thursday mornings beginning June 7 th at 10:00 a.m. The study will also be offered at Sedona Winds Independent Living on: Tuesday mornings beginning on June 5 th at 11:00 a.m. All materials will be provided and there is a schedule available in the church office. SUSI is the Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars on Religious Pluralism and Democratic Values in the United States" which is sponsored by the US State Department. The Dialogue Institute, which is housed at Temple University in Philadelphia, is the organization managing the study. Eighteen scholars will be in Sedona as part of their study of U.S. history, society, and institutions through the lens of religious pluralism in the US. The SUSI program s objectives are to: 1) Increase understanding of democratic principles and religious liberty in the United States 2) Deepen comprehension of the varied landscape of U.S. religious belief and practice 3) Enhance appreciation for the strengths of a religiously pluralist society and develop awareness of creative responses to its challenges 4) Teach participants the principles and practices of inter-religious dialogue 5) Create a context of rigorous academic engagement that supports participants in the enhancement of their own teaching and scholarship, including any study of the United States. The scholars will be from several different countries and represent many different faith traditions. One venue for support is special collections. We do four collections annually for denominational purposes, for example One Great Hour of Sharing and Neighbors in Need. We also do several for local causes like the collection in May for Verde Valley Caregivers. By the way, you contributed over $2,000. Thank you. In addition to special collections, The Church of the Red Rocks has a broad mission outreach. In case you are not aware, the church has a Mission Endowment Fund and the proceeds are used to support various organizations locally, nationally, and internationally. For 2018, the allocation from the Mission Endowment was just over $20,000. Additionally, $11,000 is included in the church s annual budget, giving us a total of approximately $31,000 for mission outreach. The recipients of mission monies are determined by the Faith In Action Ministry. So far in 2018 we have allocated just over $20,000 to the following organizations. Abide Maternity Home Bwindi Community Program CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for children) Coalition Against Human Trafficking Community Suppers Habitat for Humanity Ministerial Discretionary Fund Old Town Mission PFLAG Precious Stones Preschool There is approximately $11,000 remaining to be allocated this fall.
