1 Adams Lutheran Parish, Adams, ND The messenger JULY 2012 Pastor Susan Haukaas Cell phone: Parsonage: Adams Church: From the EaND Synod Secretary - Christine Grove Home: Church: amlc@polarcomm.com Sunday Morning Worship Summer Schedule 9:00am Hoff Lutheran 10:30am Adams Mountain From the Bishop A special thank you to all who have helped us transition from nd Avenue South to th Avenue North. Some things look the same and other things which cannot be the same. We hope that you will stop in and visit the University Lutheran Center the next time you are in Fargo. Thank you also for your patience as we have relocated. We are getting settled in and hope to be able to serve in the ways in which you have come to expect, working more closely alongside of one of our campus ministries at NDSU. Take time to welcome back Pastor Kari Bahe, as she has accepted a call to return to our staff as an Associate with the Bishop. We are grateful for Kari, already up and running: preparing for enhanced stewardship opportunities, working with Candidacy, and arranging more Congregational Leadership Academy (CLA) focuses to enrich the ministries you do on the ground as well as the ones we do together. Thank you for your work towards your own health and wellbeing. As a synod, we surpassed the 65% needed to once again receive the 2% discount for all congregations, in addition to synod wellness dollars. Stay tuned for ways in which these funds can help you in your life and ministry. As of June 15, I have begun my third decade as an ordained minister in the Church of Jesus Christ. The synod and the synod council have graciously granted a sabbatical for me. As I enter this fifth year of service as your bishop, I look forward to this time of renewal both personally and professionally. The sabbatical will run from July 16 through August 26. Pastors Terry, Kari, Keith, and the rest of the staff are more than prepared to assist you in my absence. Thank you once again for all of your prayers and kindness as I continue to adjust to my post-surgical life. I continue to seek to move towards health, balance, and the upward call of God in Jesus Christ. As you are well aware from your own call, it is not always easy, but it is always good to journey with God and God s people. Transitions are unavoidable, but they can be managed. May this summer be a time of healthy transitions for you as you move into God s promised future. Synod on the Move The Eastern North Dakota Synod is on the move, in more ways than one! The synod staff has moved to a new location, sharing office space with Lutheran Campus Ministry, NDSU. This is a physical move, but in reality, the actual synod itself is always on the move: just as the church is not a building, the synod is not an office, it is people. And God s people are moving in Eastern North Dakota (and beyond) in ministry with faith -filled relationships. We are a synod that rolls up our sleeves
2 From the Synod...for more information from their Newsletter go to Page 2 and gets moving. In this issue, we lit up several examples. ~ Rev. Kari Bahe, Associate w/ the Bishop, EaND Synod 96 Acres A phone call started it all. A longheld dream was set in motion by the caller s words: Pastor, would your congregation like to be a partner in a joint farming mission project? So, the partnering began: Ron DeWeered of the Food Resource Bank put us in contact with Bryan Nelson, a land owner from Grand Forks. The use of the 96 acres would mean that, as a congregation, we could raise funds for mission. It was reminiscent of our ancestors first acre giving. The land, the seed, and the work would translate into tangible mission support. Our council president, Mark Urness, hit the ground running looking at ways and ideas to bring more people into this mission ministry. He contacted the following businesses to join forces in Ministry: Peterson Farm Seed (for seed), Dow (chemical for spraying), Pioneer (for seed treatment), local fuel providers (for fuel), the Local Elevator (helped with coordination), and the NDSU Extension office to show us soil research for the plot and a display tube to hold dirt from the field for Rogation Sunday. This project has brought together many members and friends of Trinity, eager and willing to do God s Work, using Our Hands to support organizations locally, regionally, and globally. Those who will receive the benefits of this project include: Lutheran World Relief, Compassion International, Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, Red Willow Bible Camp, Bread of Life Food Pantry, and Pizza and Discussion. Undertaking this mission in ministry project is a great reminder of how if we listen when the Holy Spirit calls us to do something, we are only limited by the ideas we come up with to serve others in His name. ~ by Rev. Michael Jacobson, Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown, ND Hearts on Fire 2012 John Wesley's quote "Catch the fire with enthusiasm and people will come from miles to watch you burn will be a reality at our synod's Fanning the Flame Event on Sunday, August 26. Find more information about this inspirational event on the back page and in future communications. Congregational Leadership Academy The Congregational Leadership Academy (CLA) has been enthusiastically received and we are pleased that we will be offering more classes fall CLA is designed to equip lay leaders for more intentional leadership within their own congregations. We have focused on two areas of leadership: Evangelism and Stewardship. Participants have reported that the relationships which evolve in the Academy have proven to be fruitful in helping congregations with practical ideas to engage people more intentionally in ministry. Pastors are encouraged to think ahead of folks who would benefit from such leadership training. For more information, contact Pastor Kari Bahe at kari@eandsynod.org M & M s in the CAR We believe that God calls us into the world---together. And we believe that we can do more together, than we can as individual congregations. It is one of the reasons we function as synod (on a journey together). This synod is filled with people who believe that Jesus calls us to say yes to others. We know that Jesus calls us to care for others. And, we respond in a multitude of ways. Look below at the resulting movement ($56,333) from our work together in the M & M s in the CAR project. Thank you for caring, thank you for responding.thank you for being moved to make a difference. Village Education $12,957 Water Management $8,675 Emmanuel Health Clinic $8,675 Church Roofs $8,675 Seminary $8,675 Women's Center $4,338 Young Women's Scholarships $4,338 (see chart below) The Extra Mile Just over $23,000 has been raised and distributed to regional ministries through the Extra Mile. The ministries that benefited from the Extra Mile are Oak Grove Lutheran School, Red Willow and Park River Bible Camps, Luther Seminary, ELCA Colleges, North Dakota Campus Ministry, and Dacotah Oyate Lutheran Church, Tokio, ND. A word of thanks to the individuals and congregations who moved beyond the first mile in their giving and gave the extra mile to help these ministries.

4 Page 4 From the Church Office Dear Friends in Christ, For over 100 years the focal building in the city of Adams has been Mountain Lutheran Church. Its steeple can be seen high above the rooftops of other structures. The congregation is now facing a major repair to maintain its integrity. If the repair is not completed the building will have devastating deterioration in the next two years. The project will be to seal the cracks with an expandable sealant, repair where necessary, sandblast and paint. We are anticipating that Karr Tuckpointing will be here this summer to make repairs to the church. It is not too late to make a pledge or donation to the project! In fact we are still in need of funds for this important project. Thank you in advance for your generous contribution. We ask that you give prayerful consideration to a financial contribution. We have several from the annual meeting that have pledged support with financial dollars. The Council will also be visiting with members of the congregation. Would you consider one of the following? A one time donation A pledge over a one year period A pledge over a two-year period Any questions may be directed to Paul Boe at or Jeff Boe at In Christ s Love, Members of the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church Please detach bottom form and mail to: Adams Mountain Lutheran Church Attn: Building Project PO Box 79 - Adams, ND I would like to support the church by making a pledge towards the building project for Adams Mountain Lutheran church and have indicated below: A one time donation of $ A pledge over the next one year in the amount of $ A pledge over the next 2 years in the amount of $ Name Date
