2 From the Editor: 2 15 United Reformed Church Worship When I am writing this Tim and his family are on holiday so it falls to me to write the Minister s Letter! It is over twelve months now since I started compiling Contact. At first I had no idea how to do it but with the help of Alan, my son, Lesley (our previous editor), and Matthew and Luke at the printers the Contact has continued. I have done many things during my life, as no doubt, all other 70+ veterans have. Some of these things include being a library assistant in the Glasgow Public Libraries and Lancashire Public Libraries, becoming a Mum, being a nursery assistant in a couple of schools, and then coming to Wolverhampton and being a Lady of Leisure! During all this time one thing has been central to my life and that is attending church on a regular basis and getting involved in some job or another. This being my latest job! My Dad was the Sunday School Superintendent in the local Church of Scotland when I was a child so Church has always been very important in my life. I believe Jesus has been with me through it all and is with me right now and also with you. Wherever you are in your life focus on His presence, bring all your cares and concerns to Him. Ask Him to help you to trust Him even when life gets tough. He loves you. Another constant in my life has been my love of baking, as no doubt many of you know. When I have any spare time I usually end up in the kitchen with the recipe book out and looking in the cupboards to see what ingredients I have available to bake a cake. At the back of one of my recipe books I found the following poem. The recipe book was compiled by the members of Hillside Methodist Church, Brinscall, Lancashire in I was a member at this church and was the first lady steward to serve in that church from I hope you find the poem thought provoking. Please bring your own lunch. The first Tuesday of each month will concentrate on the mission and outreach of our churches. For more information contact Joy Dipple Tel One day, I saw a sign that read "Heaven's Grocery Store". As I got a little closer, the door swung open wide, And when I came to myself, I was standing right inside. I saw a host of angels. They were standing everywhere, One handed me a basket and said," My child, shop with care." Everything a Christian needed was in the grocery store, And all you couldn't carry, you could come back the next day for more. First, I got some PATIENCE; LOVE was in the same row. Further down was UNDERSTANDING; you need that everywhere you go. I got a box or two of WISDOM, a bag or two of FAITH. I couldn't miss the HOLY GHOST for it was all over the place. I stopped to get some STRENGTH and COURAGE to help me run the race. By then my basket was getting full, but I remembered some GRACE. I didn't forget SALVATION for SALVATION is free, So I tried to get enough of that to save both you and me. Then I started up to the counter to pay my grocery bill, For I thought I had everything to do my Master's will. As I went up the aisle I saw PRAYER and I just had to put that in continued over.
4 4 For I knew when I stepped outside, I would run right into sin. PEACE and JOY were plentiful they were on the last shelf. SONG and PRAISE were hanging near so I just helped myself. Then I said to the angel," Now how much do I owe?" He just smiled and said, "Take them everywhere you go." Again I said, "How much do I really owe?" He smiled again and said, "MY CHILD, JESUS PAID YOUR BILL A LONG, LONG TIME AGO!" CHURCH FLOWERS THANKYOU TO JOAN! Many thanks to Joan for arranging the flowers so beautifully in Church since I injured my arm and shoulder. She has made the Church look lovely every week for the last 18 months. THANK YOU, JOAN, VERY MUCH. Sylvia. (I am sure we would all like to say a big thank you to Joan and welcome back Sylvia! 5 12 Our Father we thank you for our Church where we can meet to worship you. We so easily take for granted the Church building, the people that keep the Church running smoothly, the lights, heating, cleaning and plumbing and all the other things it takes to hold our worship services each week. Help us to realise that while it may not be what we consider to be an exciting cause it is one that is important to YOUR cause. Let us therefore be generous in the giving of our time, talents and money. AMEN 5 The New Start Group will be meeting on Saturday 9th September, at 4 Chatsworth Gardens at 6.30pm for a social evening and to discuss plans for future meetings and events. 7 10 7 Be Thou Strong and Be Courageous When the task ahead seems daunting When the road seems rough and steep When beset by demons, haunting Waking thee from restful sleep Be thou strong and be courageous: What God promises, He ll keep! Joshua, like us, was frightened By the job he had to do; But his faith in God was heightened By God s words both wise and true: Be thou strong and be courageous Have not I commanded you? God has said He ll stand beside you He will guide you by the hand He ll be there whate er betide you Gainst the pow rs of Hell He ll stand Be thou strong and be courageous Till you reach the promised land. Welcome The country inn at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds was popular with both cyclists and ramblers. The elderly vicar of the church nearby asked if he could put up a notice welcoming them all to visit his church. The innkeeper said yes, and obligingly pinned up the notice: This year we will celebrate our Harvest Festival on Sunday 1st October. Volunteers are needed to decorate the Church windows for Harvest. Saturday 30th September. If you are able to help please speak to Margaret Reece or phone her on or or e.mail margreece1@gmail.com These are part of my favourite prayer:- But I thank You Lord that I believe., I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers. For each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes, that they are out of debt and all their needs are met. I pray that everyone knows that there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight. I pray that these words be received willingly into the hearts of everyone. And this is my prayer. In Jesus' name. Amen. Best wishes and blessings Kathy Pitcher
8 8 2 Corinthians 4 6 For God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. We all know of St Francis of Assisi, but only on a recent visit to Italy did I realise that in the next generation (early 1200s) a second saint came from Assisi as well Clare of Assisi. She was born into a wealthy family, but under the influence of Francis s preaching she left her home to become a member of a contemplative community. First she joined the Benedictines, but eventually founded her own order, popularly known as the poor Clares. The order chose to live in utter poverty or, as Clare would put it, in utter dependence on God. She was the first woman to write a Rule of Life for a religious order, and through her inspiration her order was (and is) run on democratic rather than authoritarian lines. In Italy today her order is still key to the Church s working amongst the poorest in society, not from a benevolent charitable attitude, but from a position of equality with the poorest. The order s convents are places of refuge for the dispossessed, the refugee, the unlucky and the foolish. All are welcomed with simple hospitality. Today s Bible passage surely Paul at his best reflects a similar dependence on God. Paul did not surrender all his worldly wealth in the same way as Clare, but he was very aware of his own fragility and that of his followers. Like Clare he saw that the very fragility which is so often frustrating to those who wish to run effective religious institutions, is in fact their greatest strength. It is in the fragility that utter dependence on God is found. It is in the poor clay jars of his dispirited followers that Jesus himself is found. In the United Kingdom and across the Western world, churches are very keen to develop effective evangelism strategies, and to use some of their wealth for the purpose. Perhaps Paul and Clare can teach us rich Western churches a thing or two. The best evangelism strategy might just be, like Clare, to jettison our wealth and use our poverty for the purpose instead. Their experience is that it is a far better strategy for evangelism than anything money could buy. Exert from URC Daily Devotions 11/08/17 9 Read the following through carefully and then read it again from the bottom up. It may impact your life and may help you to share your faith with anyone who says they are an atheist. An Atheist's View on Life I will live my life according to these beliefs God does not exist It is just foolish to think That there is a God with a cosmic plan That an all-powerful God brings redemption and healing Is a comforting thought, however It Is only wishful thinking People can do as they please without eternal consequences The idea that I am deserving of hell Because of sin Is a lie meant to make me a slave to those in power "The more you have the happier you will be" Our existence has no grand meaning or purpose In a world with no God There is freedom to be who I want to be But with God Everything is fine It is ridiculous to think I am lost and in need of saving. A Christian view on life A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, 'I'm drawing God.' The teacher paused and said, 'But no one knows what God looks like.' Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, 'They will in a minute.'
