Covenant Covenant Lutheran Church VOLUME 19, ISSUE #8 August 2015 Thanks to the heat, the sun, and the lengths we go to to keep everything hydrated in August, the EPA has called it Water Quality Month, to encourage us to think about how our actions influence our water supply. We might also take a moment this August to think about how our water supply affects us. When we are baptized, we proclaim that God is present in the ordinary water we use, in part because it is the ordinary stuff of life. There is nothing special or unique about the water we use for baptism. In the book of Acts, the Ethiopian Eunuch on the road to Gaza asks, What's wrong with this water here? Can I be baptized in it? and Phillip does so. Saul/Paul is baptized in Damascus, and Cornelius is stationed with his family in Caesarea, not near the Jordan river. Even though I brought home water from the Jordan River, we use normal tap water for baptisms here at Covenant. The quality of the water itself isn't a part of the rules or requirements for welcoming someone into the family of the church. In our baptisms, we proclaim that ordinary water turns ordinary people into something special, not by our own effort or work, but because God is present in that water, and because God is working in and through us. The quality of our water is secondary to the quality of our lives, renewed in water and word as followers of Jesus. Spend some time this August thinking about water. Give thanks for the water we have, and what it means to us as children of God. Pastor Joshua

2 COVENANT LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES July 9, 2015 Call to Order: Meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm Devotions: Devotions were led by Nancy Lubeck Roll Call: Reed Elmquist, Pastor Joshua, Jim Lockwood,, Shelley Sterling, Lloyd Koerwitz, Nancy Lubeck, Terry Lubeck, Connie Thomas, CA Thomas, Reno Taylor, Jennifer Bruns, Absent: Beth Morris, Sarah Jesse, Dawn McKee, Rich Bohm, Marge Scholten. Additions to Agenda: Under new business: Find a replacement for Dorothy on the council as well as new council for Sunday school. Thrift Store: We approved removal of the vent in Grandma's Attic provided that the inside and outside of roof will be repaired. Lloyd moved and Connie 2 nd. Receipts Assistance Ending Ck Bal Ending Sav Bal Thrift Store $8, $ $4, $6, Grandma's Attic $1, $3, NA Correspondence: Project Safe sent information about The Color Dash. The event will be August 29 th. Jim had a few fliers about Thrivent Events. They are posted on the bulletin boards. Reports: Secretary: Reno moved and Nancy 2 nd to accept the minutes. Financial Secretary: Connie moved and Reno 2 nd to approve the report. Treasurer: Pastor Joshua gave the report. It was moved by Jim and CA 2 nd to accept the report. President: No report given. Elders: Connie thanked everyone again for being able to fill in where needed. Trustees: CA gave an update on the electrical work being done from the nursing home. Pastor: Report was given and posted on bulletin board.

3 Committee Reports: Education: VBS was well attended and lots of pictures taken. Sunday school for fall is in the works. It will begin August 23 rd. Youth: No report given. Stewardship: Jim reported July 19 th is the Stewardship program following the church service. Sandwich makings will be available and if anyone would like to bring a side dish or dessert they may. Worship: The Green Harvest Festival is August 23 rd and the Praise band will have a concert that day. It is also the day of the blessing of the backpacks who bring them to church that day. Women of ELCA: No report. Hospitality: We will organize a meal for Dorothy Lockwood's service. Rodocker's farewell is in the works. Men of Covenant: No report. The next breakfast will likely be at the pancake breakfast for the parade at Wells Fargo drive up. Outreach: Things are going well. Altar Guild: Continuing as normal. Landscape: Jim gave a report. Old Business: Connie mentioned getting a committee together for the columbarium. There will be a meeting August 18 th at 7:30. Anyone interested please attend. Going to a town council meeting will be discussed. New Business: Reno brought up the Better Together Fund, part of the Rocky Mountain Synod. It has been tabled for further discussion. Tony & Sarah Rodocker Avery, Austin, and Owen Wyoming Conference Opportunities: Poker Run: All Wyoming Conference Congregations are invited to attend the first annual Poker Run from Lander to Buffalo. The route will go from Lander through Riverton, Thermopolis and Worland,and over the Bighorn Mts, to Buffalo, so the scenery will be breathtaking. The cost is $100 per entry (individual or team) and the winner will receive 10% of the pot with the rest going to Motorcycles for Madagascar. Since pastors in Madagascar have to travel from congregation to congregation, this will allow them to ride instead of walk. The date is Aug. 29, with the starting time in Lander at 9 am. Hotels and camping are available in Lander and Buffalo for those who wish to lengthen the trip. Breakfast will be served in Lander and dinner in Buffalo for all participants. Faster Pastors: Pastor Brenda of Grace Lutheran in Casper will be running the Colorado Ragnar with a team of 'Faster Pastors' on Aug These pastors are also earning money for 'Motorcycles for Madagascar.' If you are unable to attend the Poker Run, of if you wish to make an individual donation, make checks out to 'Rocky Mt. Synod' and write 'Faster Pastors' in the notation line. 6 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The hard but undeniable fact of deeply embedded racism in American society has come to the fore in painful ways this past year through high-profile occurrences of racial discrimination, hatred and violence including racially motivated killings. As Lutheran Christians, what should be our response and witness? As members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, how are we called to confront the sin of racism? We need to talk and we need to listen, but we also need to act. As one important step in this process, I invite you to join me and William B. Horne II, an ELCA lay leader and member of the ELCA Church Council, for a live webcast conversation on the complexity and implications of racism on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 8 p.m. (CDT). Through our church s social statement Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity, and Culture the ELCA collectively has expressed its calling to confront racism and advocate for justice and fairness for all people. You can read this social statement here. In addition, I have made several public statements on behalf of the church recently on this subject. Those statements are available here. God s intention for all humanity is that we see the intrinsic worth, dignity and value of all people. Racism undermines the promise of community and fractures authentic relationships with one another. As Christians, though, we live in the conviction that the church has been gathered together in the joyful freedom of the reign of God announced by and embodied in Jesus. That reign has not come in its fullness, but the message of God s yes to the world breaks down all dividing walls as we live into that promise. I urge you to deepen your involvement in and commitment to this important work to which we all are called. I believe our live webcast on this topic on Aug. 6 is one useful way for us to pursue this together, and I hope you will view and take part in it.
