1 Spirit Lake United Methodist Church 1812 Gary Ave. Spirit Lake, Iowa February 2018 Issue 2 United Methodist News I was recently reading an article by Brian Rose titled, 20 Unavoidable Requirements for Vision Breakthrough, and as I read it occurred to me that many of the requirements are closely related to what we will be seeking as a church and as individuals throughout the upcoming season of Lent. Lent is a time to renew and refocus our faith and our commitments and a time to seek a vision breakthrough for what God is calling us to do and be. Let me share with you some of these unavoidable requirements : But vision breakthrough requires change. And in just a few short weeks, the warm, hopeful desire for vision breakthrough will stand toe-to-toe with the cold, hard reality of the sacrifice demanded to achieve change. Only what we are truly committed-to, and convicted-of, will remain standing. For most of us, spending another year talking about what should be different will be as effective in this year as it was in the last. There is profit in all hard work, but endless talk leads only to poverty. Proverbs 14:23 It might seem obvious, but healthy change and Biblical growth will not just happen without work. Lasting breakthrough takes, Effort, Money, Time, Risk, Courage, Prayer, Truth, Reality, Collaboration, Humility, Understanding, Patience and Immediacy, and Jesus. We are so blessed to have people like you who support the work we are doing to care for the children and families of northwest Iowa. In the first summer of Camp Autumn, we served over 140 children during week-long day camps, with the majority of children attending multiple weeks. As Camp Autumn grows, we aim to serve more children and provide new opportunities for them to develop new skills. Your contributions will help to make that happen! 4 MISSION OPPORTUNITIES SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY - Sunday, Feb. 4th Help us make a touchdown against hunger and win the game by bringing cans of soup to church and placing it in the grocery cart. Every item you bring provides someone with a hot meal! DISCOVERY HOUSE The Discovery House is a rewarding opportunity to serve others in our community. We can show the gift of hospitality the first Monday of each month by sharing a meal with our friends at Discovery House. Prayerfully consider this ministry, as we use our gifts in the service for others. The signup sheet and guidelines are on the Connections Table. BACKPACK PROGRAM The school has a backpack program to send food home, and our church helps with this. This program is ongoing. There is a bin in the Narthex for your donations. *Monetary contributions are appreciated as it enables the pantry to buy food and items as they are needed.* MITTEN TREE Thanks to everyone who donated to the mitten tree. We received lots of nice, warm, winter apparel to take to the school. It was much appreciated! Many hands make light work and we couldn t have done it without you all! We love our newly updated nursery and can t wait to share God s love with our littlest members. Our Baby Room for ages 0-2 year olds and our Littles Room for ages 3-5 year olds is available every Sunday from 10:15-11:35. We will always have two teachers and two helpers in the nursery. COMING SOON: keep any eye out for the What s Happening in our Nursery bulletin board. This will be located outside the nursery and will have information for Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers. 5 Women s Bible Suffering & Sovereignty (The books of Job, Lamentations, and Ecclesiastes) ing the books of Job, Lamentations and Ecclesiastes will give us glimpses of God s glory and goodness in suffering. We aren t called to like suffering, but we are called to love God. God is good even when life is not. God is there in the midst of suffering. Few of us escape the pain of this life. But we all have the hope of a Savior who heals our hurts. Beginning January 4 Choose a time that works for you! Thursdays: 2:00 PM Or Fridays: Or Mondays: 6:00 PM NO book purchase necessary. Just bring your favorite Bible. SLUMC SNIP ITS Sunday School for youth meets every Sunday at 9:30 AM. Wonderful Wedndesday includes a community meal at 5:30 followed by kids and youth classes.
