But remember that Christians do not take a vacation from God (what if He took a vacation from us?). Worship faithfully this summer and find true "re-creation" for body, mind and soul. If you are out of town on both Sunday and Wednesday, and cannot worship with us, go to or call the church office for times and locations of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod church services in the town where you will be vacationing. Work day at Grand Marais Life in Christ in Grand Marais is looking for help with some projects in and around the church. They are having a work weekend June There is space for RV s, campers and tents to stay overnight. There are jobs for every skill level, mowing, brush cutting, tree planting, landscaping and a couple of buildings to raze or salvage, exterior scraping, priming and painting, repairs. They are asking people to bring their own tools to work in the area you desire i.e. rakes, shovels, weed eaters, brush cutters for yard work. Painting equipment, scrapers, carpenters tools. If you would like to spend some time to help a fellow congregation and enjoy the beauty of Grand Marais please sign up on the office door. A couple of other churches in our district are putting crews together on the June dates. Together in Mission On Sunday July 19 th there will be a special guest preacher. Rev. Dr. Daniel Jastram will preach during the 9 a.m. service and give a special presentation on his and his wife s missionary work in Asia at 10:15 a.m. Please join us for what is to be an interesting morning and learn how you can support their mission work for the LCMS through the Together in Mission partnership. Pray for Rev. Dr. Daniel & Dr. Joan Jastram Rev. Dr. Daniel and Dr. Joan Jastram serve the Lord as career missionaries through The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) in northern Asia, based in 1 Tokyo, Japan. In this role, Daniel helps develop and implement a strategic mission plan for this area. He coordinates theological education opportunities and also supervises and evaluates theological educators throughout northern Asia. When needed, Daniel teaches courses at Japan Lutheran Theological Seminary, Tokyo. Daniel was born in Shibata, Japan, and raised overseas in an LCMS missionary family. His childhood congregation was Shibata Lutheran Church, Japan. He received a bachelor s degree from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, and both a master s degree and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. He received his Master of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind. Before serving in Asia, he was a professor of theology at Concordia University, St. Paul, St. Paul, Minn., and Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon. He also served as sole pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Forest Lake, Minn. In his free time, Daniel enjoys reading, hiking and bookbinding. Joan was born in Mitchell, S.D., where her childhood congregation was Zion Lutheran Church. She received both a bachelor s and a master s degree from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. She received her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Twin Cities, Minn. Before her missionary service in Asia, Joan worked as a clinical psychologist and plans to continue in this capacity. Joan enjoys reading, hiking and cooking in her free time. Please pray for Daniel and Joan as they serve in northern Asia. Pray for them as they transition to life in Asia, re-adapting their family s culture and way of life to these new surroundings. Ask God to give them renewed zeal to go out and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the individuals they encounter where they work and live. Please pray the hearts and ears of the people of Japan and northern Asia are prepared to hear and confess this Good News and the life that it brings. Ask God to continue to give strength and guidance to the missionaries currently serving in this area. Let us give thanks to God for the Jastrams who serve His children in this part of the world! 2 Summer Sunday Temptations! Early one gorgeous summer Sunday morning a local pastor decided to skip church. He called in sick to the head deacon and went fishing, pulling in a stringer of 6-8 pound walleyes in less than an hour! Never before had he enjoyed such success. Since the day was still young, he next went golfing and had an excellent round, the best ever! The pastor scored a couple of birdies, several pars and on the final par 3, experienced the thrill of a lifetime by hitting a hole- in- one. Now in heaven above Peter and Jesus were watching this pastor s day with great interest. Peter was obviously upset. Lord, this miserable excuse of a pastor is skipping out on church. Instead of smiting him, You have blessed him with a limit of walleyes and a hole- in- one! Jesus replied, But Peter, who is he going to tell? Yes, even pastors are tempted by gorgeous summer days. If Sunday morning finds you on the lake or the links, then remember your Lord s call to be faithful. Year round you have the opportunity to receive His Service not only on Sunday, but also on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Weekly worship is not just a suggestion it is God s command: Remember the Sabbath day be keeping it holy. And the New Testament also exhorts us: Do not give up meeting together [in worship] as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching (Hebrews 10:25). Yes God created this beautiful world and by all means enjoy it. But as beautiful as it is, even creation needed a Redeemer to release it from bondage to sin. I love the outdoors, but no squirrel has ever prayed for me and no sunset has ever offered me the forgiveness of my sins. I ve never sent a missionary or trained a pastor by paying for a round of golf. Only in the Divine Service does God offer us the gift of redemption as He speaks His Word into our ears and spreads the banquet table of Holy Communion to satisfy our deepest hunger. Why worship this summer? Because We are a part of that beautiful creation that Christ redeemed from sin with His precious blood; We need to feed and nurture our spiritual life; We belong to Christ s Body, the Church, from which we draw encouragement and strength; and As we worship and work together, the Lord can multiply our gifts and magnify our impact on His kingdom work. Finally, it is important that we faithfully support the Lord s work with our financial offerings during the summer months on a regular and consistent basis. God s gifts and blessings do not stop during the summer and neither should we stop returning thanks to Him. I love summer the opportunity to bike, barbecue, fish, golf, and best of all, to be served by our Lord in His House! See you there! Pastor David Schoessow 2

Motion Carried Adjournment: Lord s Prayer Respectfully Submitted by: Sharyn Vengrin Stewardship We give Thee but Thine own, Whate er the gift may be; All that we have is Thine alone, A trust, O Lord, from Thee. May we Thy bounties thus As stewards true receive And gladly, as Thou blessest us, To Thee our first-fruits give! (LSB 781:1 2). In many congregations these stanzas are sung every Sunday when the offerings of God s faithful people are received. It s a sung reminder of who God is and who we are in relation to Him, of what God does for us and gives to us, and how we respond to His generosity. We are stewards of God s varied grace to us. As stewards we acknowledge that God owns all things and that everything in heaven and on earth belongs to Him (1 Chron 29:14; Ps 24:1; Ps 100:3; 1 Cor 4:7; 1 Cor 6:19). Even we ourselves all that we are and all that we have are His. We are His because He created us, preserves us, redeemed us, and sanctifies us. As the stewards of what He has done for us and given to us, we give of our first fruits to Him and His Church. And the Lord receives them and presses them into a use all His own. He sanctifies it. He hallows it. He uses it to ensure that the Word of God is still preached among us. He uses it to ensure that there is water for Baptism, bread and wine for His Holy Supper. He uses what He gives to you and what you give back to Him for your good. Everything that happens in the church is purchased with the giving of the saints from what God has provided them. Holy giving from holy people pressed into holy service. But there s more. For our giving does not just make the liturgical life of the church possible. It s not just the necessary means by which the vessels and sacramental

5 elements, the hymn books and pastors are made available. The giving of God s stewards is part of the liturgy itself, part of the Divine Service. It is one of our responses within the liturgy where we, not just with words spoken or sung, but with deeds declare, live out and live in, the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Pet 2:9). Our offerings are part of God s sanctifying work that He has us do in the Divine Service for the life of the world. That s what makes our stewardship so precious and significant. God hallows what we give and employs it to sanctify us and others. And that is why we sing: And gladly, as Thou blessest us, To Thee our first-fruits give! Tuesday Community Outreach Visits Members of the congregation are invited to join Pastor in making neighborly visits in our community on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 5:30 p.m. (During the summer we will not go every Tuesday. Thus, the chief purpose of LCMS U is to encourage, support and aid students, faculty and staff in their response to these challenges to the truth of God's Word. Please pray for ail who are engaged in campus ministry throughout the Synod: O God, source of all abiding knowledge and truth, who through Your Word and Spirit both enlightens the minds and sanctifies the lives of the faithful; we implore You to look with favor on the campus ministries of Your church, and grant that they may faithfully proclaim Your Gospel on the campuses of our nation; that Your Word may shine both upon the minds and hearts of students everywhere and that these may be drawn by Your grace and calling to salvation through Christ Jesus our Lord, who Iives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen.
