3 Minute for Mission: We Will Be Fine The modest little stone chapel sits on a hilltop overlooking Centro de Actividades Nacionale Iglesia Presbiteriana-Reformada (CANIP), the national camp and conference center of the Presbyterian Reformed Church in Cuba (IPRC). The scene is one of devastation. Last summer s Hurricane Irma tore the roofs off most of CANIP s buildings (dormitories, dining hall and chapel), toppled many trees and wrecked the water and electrical systems. Sitting on crude benches in the mangled chapel, one can see lots of blue sky where part of the corrugated tin roof used to be. CANIP is very damaged, says the Rev. Edelberto Valdes, a pastor in Caibarién and general secretary of the IPRC. We are trying to change the style of the roofs, because every year we lose more. CANIP was founded in July 1994, during the special period following the collapse of the Soviet Union, which had been Cuba s main political and economic patron since shortly after the Castro revolution in Since then it has been used to host IPRC meetings and activities, children and youth camps, ecumenical gatherings and international church gatherings. The chapel that is home to the Presbyterian mission at CANIP was built in 1997 by young adult volunteers from CANACOM (the Caribbean and North America Council for Mission of what is now the World Communion of Reformed Churches). Reconstruction at CANIP is supervised by the Rev. Reile Marrero, pastor of the Presbyterian church in nearby Santa Clara in Cuba s central highlands. Marrero pastors one other church and two missions (small, informal congregations) in the area, including the CANIP mission. It is very important to have a mission here, because the people didn t have a place to meet, says Marrero. We have prayer meetings here every Saturday with house church services two other times a week, plus Bible study every week. Once a month, the mission serves lunch to older adults in the area. And we are trying to get a Sunday school started, Marrero adds. With Marrero stretched so thin, we are trying to train some new leaders for the mission, Valdes says, noting that a pastor who previously served the mission has now gone to a nearby church that has languished without a pastor. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Steadfast God, we confess that we are so busy putting up walls between ourselves and others, we cannot see the home you are building for all of us. We spend so much time noting the differences between us and others, while you are embracing everyone as your child. We run to welcome those who look, talk, and act like us, and you throw open your doors to the stranger, the alien, in our midst. Forgive us, Faithful Heart. By your grace, help us to see the household you are building for all people. The Church s One Foundation (Responsively) School supplies are needed for Church World Service (CWS) school bags and students who attend the Summer Lunch program. School supplies will be going on sale during June, July, and August, We are hoping will take advantage of those sales and purchase items on the list below so we can help many students this year. Last year we supplied 32 children in the lunch program with necessary basic supplies and put together 81 school kits for CWS. That requires a lot of supplies which we can only do with your help! 6 ANNOUNCEMENTS NURSERY CARE DURING WORSHIP is provided for infants and children through the second grade. Parents are asked to take their child (ren) to the nursery during the hymn just before the sermon. The nursery is found through the door to the left of the pulpit, down the hall on the left. Children who are in the third grade and older should remain with their families during the worship service. THE ECUMENICAL FOOD PANTRY continues to meet a growing need in the Ichabod Crane School district. They are grateful for all donations of non-perishable foods (that have a future expiration date) and are asking particularly at this time for tuna, cereals and hamburger helper. If you have any questions about the Food Pantry or how you might get involved, speak with Dorothy Johnson or Carol Matthews, our representatives on the Food Pantry Committee. The Finance and Stewardship Committee would like to remind everyone to keep up with their pledges and offerings throughout the summer. Our expenses do not go on vacation when we do. Please help us pay our bills on time by sending your contributions in before you go away or take a Sunday off. Thank you in advance! On Thursdays, July 12 and 19, Wednesday, August 8, Thursdays, August 16 and 23, there will be a Bible Study looking at some of the great Psalms of the Bible. There are books available for $10 each to go along with the study. We will begin at 6:30 pm. and end by 8:00 pm. so that it should still be light out. We will look at several Psalms; chapters 8,13,32,63 and 90. Join us for this respite during the summer to study psalms together. See Pastor Kathi if you would like to purchase a book. Do you have a few hours to volunteer this summer? Check out the Job Jar on the table at the back of the sanctuary and find a task you can do around the building Finish it this week and put the completed job in the other jar. Pastor Kathi will be on vacation July 23 - July 31 visiting with her daughter in South Dakota. Then she will be in Louisville, Kentucky at a conference on behalf of the Presbyterian Women of Albany Presbytery. She will be back home and in the office on Tuesday, August 7. Please call Elder Nancy Pienta, Clerk of Session, at if you have need of pastoral care and she will arrange for that. Pastor Kathi goes to Louisville, Kentucky August 1-5. She is going as the Voting Representative to the meeting for Albany Presbytery s Presbyterian Women. They meet triennially and will have their business meeting where they will vote on officers, new programs and of course, procedures and budgets. There is also a time for plenary gatherings with speakers and plenty of workshops. Every year there is a mission project and this year they are collecting gift cards from CVS, Target, Walmart and Walgreens to be given out to new mothers who have great needs and few resources through 3 different agencies. Pastor Kathi is collecting cards or donations if anyone would like to participate. There is a flier on the bulletin board across from the office if anyone would like more information. Please give your donation by check or gift card ($10 cards only please). Checks may be made out to: Albany PW and earmarked gift cards and given to Pastor Kathi by July 22. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. The Kinderhook Reformed Church is once again sponsoring a Rise Against Hunger meal packaging event on Saturday, September 8 from noon to 3:00pm. at the Martin H Glynn Building. The goal is to package 20,000 meals in that time. Sound impossible? It actually is done all the time but it takes 100 volunteers to make it happen, These are not meals we would recognize but are measured out to include vitamins, soy, rice and dried vegetables. Each meal costs just 29 cents each which means they have to raise $5, Our mission committee is sending a donation on our behalf but they need volunteers. Wear a hat or hair nets will be provided. The Our Daily Bread and The Upper Room devotionals are available on the table. Consider picking up a copy of these helpful devotionals and making it a part of your daily time of prayer and Bible reading.
