3 May the Lord bless the people with peace! (Ps. 29:11) Philadelphia Presbytery has hosted International Peacemakers for two consecutive years, and the impact of these visits has been profound. In 2014 the peacemaker was James Ninrew from the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan. Last year the peacemaker was Rami Al Maqdasi from Iraq. These two countries, though continents apart, have both suffered the burdens of war. Each has experienced mass displacements of 2015 International Peacemakers people from their region, and some of those who have sought refuge have found it in the Philadelphia area. Members of Ivyland Presbyterian Church, impacted by these two peacemakers visits, decided it was time for their church to do something. Pastor Sarah Weisiger writes, In large part due to our having reflected on this issue when Rami and James were with us, our session stepped up. When an immediate need arose, we called a meeting, and the session voted unanimously to help sponsor a refugee family. Even the local ministerial association, having heard from our two peacemakers, started talking about refugee resettlement. We ended up with six congregations stepping up to help the refugees. It has been darn awesome. A Season of Peace begins today and continues until October 2, World Communion Sunday, when the Peace & Global Witness Offering is received. During this time, individuals and congregations are encouraged to focus on peacemaking and to step up as peacemakers. Resources available include daily reflections, Peace Cards for children, a fivesession adult Bible study, and a five-session lesson plan for children. Deal radically with our tarnished souls which were meant for brighter things. Forgive all that you find fallen, reclaim that which is rebellious, expel that which is alien, and strengthen that which is sane, loving and beautiful. 5 ANNOUNCEMENTS NURSERY CARE DURING WORSHIP is provided for infants and children through the second grade. Parents are asked to take their child (ren) to the nursery during the hymn just before the sermon. The nursery is found through the door to the left of the pulpit, down the hall on the left. Children who are in the third grade and older should remain with their families during the worship service. THE ECUMENICAL FOOD PANTRY continues to meet a growing need in the Ichabod Crane School district. They are grateful for all donations of non-perishable foods (that have a future expiration date) and are asking particularly at this time for canned ravioli, tuna, pasta and spaghetti sauce. If you have any questions about the Food Pantry or how you might get involved, speak with Dorothy Johnson or Carol Matthews, our representatives on the Food Pantry Committee. If you would like to honor someone or make a gift in memory of someone, consider giving flowers for a Sunday worship service. A sign-up sheet is in the back of the sanctuary for you to give the information necessary for the bulletin and a form to fill out and put in the Secretary s box. You may bring any flowers you want from the garden or store arranged. We all appreciate the beauty of creation! The September issue of The Upper Room and Our Daily Bread devotionals are on the table at the back of the sanctuary. Please feel free to take one or both to use in your own daily devotional practice. If you haven t done that, give it a try; you will be glad you did. PLEASE TAKE NOTE!! NEXT SUNDAY worship begins at 11:00am. Saturday, September 10 at 11:00am. there will be worship and a Celebration of Life for Elfriede Jacker. There will be no calling hours, so the reception following the service is the time for folks to greet the family. The Pulled Pork Bar-B-Q will be Saturday September 17. Holy are you, Redeeming God, So, as we come to the Table of grace and hope, we remember that mystery we call faith: Christ died, having counted the cost. Christ was raised, the foundation of resurrection being set in place. Christ will come, refreshing our hearts for all eternity.
