MUSIC NOTES This morning s closing voluntary, written by Virginiaborn organist David Kelley, comes from a suite of three pieces called An American Triptych. Each piece in this collection - respectively titled Mountain Majesties, Spacious Skies, and Alabaster Cities - evokes a particular line of the hymn American the Beautiful. The first two pieces extol our country s natural beauty, while the third (heard in church today) celebrates the bustling cities in which many of us live. Like any metropolis, the piece is clamorous and mechanical, but it is also brimming with excitement and activity. YOUNG CHILDREN & WORSHIP is a ministry of worship preparation for young children and their parents. Parents and their children who are age 4 or 5 by September 1, 2012, are invited to participate (this includes children in the Faith, Hope, Love, and Mercy Sunday School classes). This ministry is offered during both 8:30 and 11:00 worship services and meets in Room CW-110, which is located in the Children s Ministry wing. Please reference the worship bulletin to know when to exit the sanctuary. We ask that children who are attending for the first time be accompanied by a parent. OFFICER RECOMMENDATIONS The Nominating Committee for Church Officers is soliciting recommendations from the members of First Presbyterian Church for persons to be considered to serve in the offices of Elder and Deacon. CHILDREN S SUNDAY SCHOOL AND NURSERY Sunday School meets from 9:45 to 10:45 every Sunday. Guests can find assistance in locating a class for your child at the Welcome Desk in the Children s Ministry Wing (Age 3-6) and at the Welcome Cart at the top of C-Wing in Oak Hill School (children entering 1st-6th grades). Nursery care for children six weeks to age three is available during both worship services and Sunday School. Check in at the Welcome Desk in the Children s Ministry Wing. 6 MOTHER AND INFANT QUIET ROOM Mothers of infants who need a quiet place for nursing or calming babies are welcome to use the Quiet Room. An audio feed of the worship service is provided. Check in with Karen Fitts in the Nursery to see if the Quiet Room is available for your use. OFFICER PRAYER TIME Prayer requests for our congregation can be submitted to the church officers by filling out prayer request cards and depositing them in the Prayer Request Boxes, located in the narthex on the southeast wall and at the Welcome Center. Prayer request cards can be found in a rack attached to the Prayer Request Box. Officers meet each Wednesday at 4:30 P.M. in the Bryant Conference Room to lift up prayer requests to God. RADIO BROADCAST First Presbyterian s 11:00 A.M. worship service is broadcast each Sunday afternoon at 4:00 P.M. on WAMB 1200 AM. SERMONS preached at First Presbyterian Church are published weekly. You can log on to the church website ( to listen to an audio version or read a printed version of the sermon. Printed copies of the sermon can also be found in literature areas of the church (in the narthex and Welcome Center). ATTENTION: BUILDING ENTRANCE CLOSURE Construction to the Oak Hill school office has begun. The main school entrance, across from the flag pole, will be closed off for all regular comings and goings and may not be used for Sunday services until further notice. We are directing all school traffic to the West Porch doors behind the Library. NACOME FAMILY WEEKEND The FPC weekend camp this year will be August Our very own Todd Jones will be leading the Bible study. 7 THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY with Todd Jones will be taking a break during the summer. The class will begin again after Labor Day. THE JUNE RAMSEY CLASS will continue its potpourri of topics/speakers during the month of July. Class begins at 9:45 A.M. in the living room of the Cheek House. Everyone is welcome. July 7: Dr. John Lachs, renowned philosopher at Vanderbilt University, describes his topic for July 7 as follows: We lead longer, safer and richer lives than any previous generation. Despite this, we feel passive, insignificant and unhappy. How can we reconcile our comfort with this discomfort? Does religion help? July 14: We will watch a 9-minute video titled From Conception to Birth. Dr. Elizabeth Oldfield, an OB-GYN and member of First Presbyterian, will be with us to interpret the video and to answer questions. WONDERSTRUCK HAS BEGUN! A new a summer Bible study called Wonderstruck, by Margaret Feinberg, meets in Vance Hall on Tuesdays from 10:00-11:30 A.M. and continues through July 23. HOME PARTNER MINISTRY is a rewarding ministry that offers an opportunity for the joy of new friendships. A Home Partner is a volunteer who makes visits to a church member who lives in a retirement home or at home and is unable to regularly attend church services because of health concerns. A Home Partner is asked to visit one church member once a month and to extend the care and concern of our church. Home Partners have the joy of delivering an Easter flower and a Christmas poinsettia, on behalf of the church. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT SAFE HAVEN FAMILY SHELTER Looking for a volunteer opportunity to share with your family, a group of families or a group of friends? CHILDREN S MINISTRY AND NURSERY n Summer Sunday School Our summer Christian Education program for children is a relaxed, multi-age setting. Children who will enter Kindergarten in August, as well as younger children, will meet in the Children s Ministry Wing, CW-116. Children who will enter 1st through 6th grade will meet together in Grundy Hall. These groups will do their Bible Study in hands-on, age-appropriate ways. It has activities for both children and parents. n Thank You to our Vacation Bible School Volunteers Our great VBS volunteers showed hospitality and channeled lots of wonderful energy, helping the children learn to serve their neighbors. Check the First Edition for a full VBS report. n New Sunday School Class Opening in August for Parents with Young Children This class will be a perfect place for nonteaching adults who have children ages birth through six years old. Teaching veterans, Mort and Jami Hill, are creating a place for younger parents to be supported and enjoy study time around topics

9 like (The Power of God at Home: Nurturing Our Children in Love and Grace) or (Parenting Preschoolers Faithfully). Watch for additional details. n Nurturing a Heart of Servanthood Tweens who will be entering 4th, 5th, or 6th grade are extended the opportunity throughout the summer to serve as a baptism buddy to a baby who is being baptized during a worship service. During this special occasion in the life of a family, the Baptism Buddy stands with the baby and the family at the Baptismal font and participates in the worship service by reading Scripture or a prayer. This is a concrete way to fulfill the promise we make at every Baptism to help each other know and love Jesus and to remind the family that they are walking the journey of faith with their child surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. There are baptisms scheduled at either 8:30 A.M. or 11:00 A.M. throughout the summer. Easy and clear directions will be provided to you for your tween prior to the baptism. This worship service features in-depth Biblical teaching and contemporary worship music. Young adults go out to dinner together after the service. n FPC Young Professionals are young adults in their 20s and 30s who worship, learn, and serve at First Presbyterian Church. Young Professionals includes those who are single, married, and divorced, who do not have children, and who are either working in a career or studying toward a post-graduate degree. In the fall, there will be a NEW Young Adult Sunday School class specifically designed for Young Professionals. Our next social event is a brunch TODAY following the 11:00 A.M. service at Nero s (2122 Hillsboro Drive).

10 AGE-LEVEL MINISTRIES n Summer College Bible Study meets each Thursday night from 6:30-8:00 P.M. and includes a light supper. We will take a break on July 4 and resume July 11 at Scott Hearon s house (3504 Belmont Blvd ). n Young Adult Small Group (ages 22 to 35) meets Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00 P.M., at the home of Rachel and Lipscomb Davis (1124 Stonewall Jackson Court, 37220). The group is currently studying The New Testament from Scratch.
