5 MUSIC NOTE Today s hymns were written in three different centuries by clergymen from three (or perhaps four) different Christian traditions. The Presbyterian minister Henry van Dyke wrote the words to Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee in the early 20th century; Frederick William Faber, an Anglican who became a Roman Catholic priest, wrote There s a Wideness in God s Mercy in the mid-19th century; and Charles Wesley, the Anglican priest and co-leader of the Methodist movement, wrote You Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim in the mid-18th century. In spite of doctrinal differences and the passing of time, we Christians are united in our praise of the living God.
