2 Page Two ST. JOAN OF ARC PARISH Dear Sisters and Brothers, Living in the present is a very difficult thing to do. It s easier to live in the past or in the future because the present always calls us to make decisions. The past and the future are always shaped by the choices we make in the present. How do we recognize God s presence in our midst? In our first reading from Isaiah 61:1-2, 10-11, the prophet says that we know God is with us when we work to free the captives, when we strive to establish justice; we nurture the garden of earth. We know God is with us when we are doing the work of God. In our Gospel from John 1: 6-8, 19-28, John the Baptizer puts his finger on the tragedy of unbelief. There is one among you whom you do not recognize. Christ is not some distant historical or heavenly being. Christ is the presence and the power of God among us. We often pray as if God were far away. We imagine God in the heavens, looking down from on high at our struggling world. But the truth is that God is right here, with us, in the struggle. Faith takes on a different look when we imagine Christ as a powerful presence in our lives. His living presence fills every moment of our lives. The couple must also meet with a priest or deacon at least six months prior to the proposed wedding date. SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK: For anyone experiencing chronic illness or preparing for medical treatment, surgery, long-term care, etc., please call the Parish Office to arrange an appointment with a priest. Also celebrated in the communal form on the 1st Saturday of each month at the 9am Mass. Walk for Life January 21, 2012 San Francisco - Join us on Saturday, January 21, 2012 as we continue to peacefully proclaim that life is the best choice. Each year we have greater numbers. Last year more than 40,000 people joined in solidarity. We gather to challenge the belief that abortion is a good choice for women. Hello everyone, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your wonderful donations of sweat suits, towels, toiletries, etc. It was a truly incredible gesture on everyone's part. Today was the opening day of St. Mary s shelter and we took the first of a large amount of donated items there. If you've never visited a shelter before let me tell you it immediately makes you want to thank God for all that you have. All of life s stresses and worries disappear in an instant when you see truly needy people. I encourage everyone to visit St Mary's and to support this organization. It is located in a very poor part of Oakland, where seniors can come together for food, companionship and shelter. The counselors and care providers are truly doing God's work on earth. The Catholic Sisters asked me to pass on that they so appreciated everyone's donations. JOAN OF ARC PARISH Religious Education Telephone: CHRISTMAS PROGRAM If anyone is interested in being a part of our Christmas program at the Children s Mass on Christmas Eve, please send an or contact the RE Office. We need lots of angels, shepherds, sheep, cows, and kings. We need children of all ages to help out with this program. We will have one practice on Monday, December 19 at 4:00 pm. ROCK and BLAST meet together this Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00. We will be wrapping gifts for those who are less fortunate than we are. This is mandatory for any volunteer who works with children in the diocese. Please check with the RE Office to pick up a form before you go to have this done. We have 9 adults who will be welcomed into the Catholic Church and completing their Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. You will be seeing them usually at the 9:00 am Mass where they will be dismissed after the homily to break open the word for further study. Please keep them in your prayers.

JOAN OF ARC PARISH December 11, Third Sunday of Advent Gaudete Sunday The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted - Isaiah 61:1 The Lord God has anointed all of us through Baptism and He has sent each of us on a mission. Each of us has been given unique gifts and talents so that we can help fulfill God s mission here on earth. All of the people in today's readings - the prophet Isaiah, the Virgin Mary, St. Paul, St. John the Baptist - seemed to understand clearly and rejoice in what God was calling them to be and to do. In the midst of our preparations for Christmas, we are reminded to stop and spend time rejoicing for what God has done for us. In his letter to the Thessalonians, Paul reminds us as the Christian Church to rejoice always. We are called to rejoice, proclaim and, as stewards, to use the many things God has given us our time, our talents, and our treasure to help others recognize the many good things God does for us. She has been formally declared Patroness and Mother of the Americas. Informally, she is honored as Patroness of Unborn Children because she appeared to Juan Diego as a pregnant woman and, in the seven years after the apparitions, approximately eight million Aztec people converted to Catholicism, and abandoned a culture of death that had practiced human sacrifice, including infant sacrifice. Mother of God, your ribbon sash identified you as a pregnant woman, a woman who bore the Christ Child to a world in darkness and who through two millennia has borne the light and love of Christ to a world that has largely rejected Him. May the love of your Son awaken a hymn of thanksgiving and praise in all pregnant mothers, as happened long ago in the home of Elizabeth and Zechariah.

The theme of our Women s Retreat on February 4 will be Girlfriends in God. In keeping with this theme, we will be celebrating the ways in which females in our lives have helped us on our spiritual journeys. These are the girls and women who have been Christ to us at special and/or difficult times in the many phases of our lives, from childhood to twilight years... our mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmas, cousins, best friends, old friends, distant friends, new friends, daughters, nieces, co-workers, etc. And we invite YOU to share your story. We will be compiling an anthology of stories from the Women of St. Joan about the special girlfriends in God that we ve had.
