THANKS! NOISY MISSION OFFERING in March is going to Little Grassy Camp Dear Congregation, In October of last year, the District Superintendent extended to our congregation a request to consider the possibility of doing ministry in DeSoto. At that time, it appeared that the DeSoto UMC would be closing in a few months, leaving this small community with no active United Methodist ministry. For the past several months, I have been working with the leadership of our congregation, the District Superintendent and Bishop, and the remaining members of the DeSoto church to discuss and explore this possibility. During this time, the ministry plan has seen many revisions, and I write you today to provide you with information on the current proposal. The current proposal would call for the DeSoto UMC and our congregation to merge in order to facilitate a new format for ministry in DeSoto. Unlike the merger in the mid 60s with the Centenary congregation, where you had two churches of similar size, we would basically absorb the DeSoto church into our current structure. This process would require both congregations to vote and approve such a merger at a Charge Conference meeting. If successful, the assets of the DeSoto congregation would belong to MUMC and become tools for us to open a satellite ministry in DeSoto. An equally important part of this proposal is a grant from the Illinois Great Rivers Conference, which would financially support the development of the DeSoto ministry for the next three years. Funds would be provided that would assist with additional operational costs, such as utilities and insurance, and program costs, which would include additional staff and supplies. Within the next few weeks, I will be announcing the congregational meeting to come together to present this ministry proposal, answer questions which are present, and then to vote on the question of merger and a satellite DeSoto ministry. To help facilitate this meeting, I have put together a Q & A sheet which is included on page 4 in this newsletter. To God be the Glory, Larry please note: There will not be Easter Sunrise Services at MUMC this year. If you would like a Sunrise experience, we invite you to Bald Knob Cross in Alto Pass at 6:30 a.m., to hear our own Pastor Larry deliver the message.

Christian Celebration of the Passover Seder Meal The Last Supper Matthew 26:17-19 NIV 17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover? 18 He replied, Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house. 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. In the past few years we have observed Maundy Thursday with a Service of Shadows, with the extinguishing of candles. This year we are going to take a step closer to the Passover ritual which Christ shared with his disciples at the Last Supper. Many do not realize that the Last Supper was actually a meal. During Passover, a Jewish observance of God passing over the homes which displayed blood from a sacrificial lamb on the threshold, there is also a meal called the Seder Meal, which is shared with all present. This meal commemorates the exodus and flight of the Hebrews from Egypt. At the Christian observance of the Seder Meal, a feast meal is served along with a plate of items that are symbolic of the Israelites being brought out of the land of bondage, such as bitter herbs, charoses, greens, and salt water. All of the symbolic meanings are explained during the meal. Many of us have observed Easter all of our lives without realizing the significance of the week between Palm Sunday and Easter, for many referred to as Holy Week. From the triumphant entry to Jerusalem, to the Last Supper, agonizing in the garden, the arrest, to the trial and then the walk to Golgotha, Jesus used these events to fulfill the prophecy foretold. As we Christians prepare our hearts for the Risen Lord, come join us to observe the Christian Seder Meal and Last Supper on Thursday, March 24. Due to lack of space, seating is limited to 60. Tickets are $8 and on sale March 6th & 13th after each worship service in the Fellowship Hall. Seder Meal Team Member - Nancy Fager CACHE RIVER DISTRICT UMM RALLY! 4 DeSoto Proposal Page 4 Q & A about DeSoto UMC Merger Proposal Why are we even considering doing this? I feel there are several responses to this question. It has been on my heart for some time that a future role of our church would be to partner with a smaller congregation to help offer ministry options and opportunities which they could not offer on their own. This potential merger with the DeSoto church offers us just such an opportunity. Also, it continues to provide an important United Methodist presence in a neighboring community. I believe we can be effective in fulfilling our mission in a new location, and thus reaching the people of DeSoto for Christ. But the ultimate question is: Is this a ministry God is calling us to do? Discerning that answer is the work of all of us. What will the cost be to our church? Very little if any at the beginning. Christine Nolan, myself and few others have been working to formulate the cost of doing ministry in DeSoto. Getting the grant from the Illinois Great Rivers Conference is essential for going forward with the work. Over time, I am sure there will be some cost, but the ultimate goal is to have a new worshipping congregation of 40 to 60 people within 3 to 5 years. If that goal can be reached, the ministry will be financially self-sufficient. How many people from the DeSoto church will be coming to our church? This congregation was only worshipping about 10 to 15 people for Sunday worship. We might pick up a family or two, but not many. One family already has one of their children participating in our Confirmation program. What are the risks involved to our church if the ministry fails? Very little. If the ministry is not successful, we are not required to repay the grant or keep the property. We could at that point turn the property over the Illinois Great Rivers Conference, or we could sell it. What are the additional staff positions needed? The ministry focus in DeSoto will be children and youth for the first several months. Our current Children and Youth Coordinator position will be increased from 10 to 25 hours per week (the person hired was aware of this when they were hired and is agreeable to the additional hours). We will need an additional custodian, some additional office administrative hours, and one additional part-time program person. Some current staff will just have a few hours increased and some additional persons will be hired. Who will care for the property and facilities in DeSoto? Our Trustees will have the oversight of this property, but we will need to hire some additional staff to help clean and maintain the property. What assets does the DeSoto church have? The church building is small but in very good condition. It is all one level and handicapped accessible. This building is located on highway 149, just across from the police and fire station. Next to the church is a fairly new parsonage, which is also not large, but is a well-maintained brick three bedroom home. Possibly $3,000 in financial assets and they have no debt. What happened to the DeSoto church? Approximately three years ago, the pastor of the church at that time, working with other members of the congregation, organized a church split of the DeSoto church and the other two churches on the charge, which were Vergennes Wesley and Hallidayboro. Since that time the Hallidayboro church has closed. The members who left have since formed a new church which meets in the DeSoto Grade School.

5 The MUMC Library Page 5 CHURCH LIBRARY Love the Lord your God with all your mind. New Stuff! Recent additions to the library: Birthed in Prayer: Pregnancy as a Spiritual Journey Louie Giglio s Passion Talk Series (DVD): Indescribable; How Great is Our God; Symphony; Moved by Mercy The Library Corner: Going Deeper Lent is the season of personal reflection as we think of Jesus journey to the cross, and of his resurrection. These events changed our world! We also think of our own journey of faith, and how we too may need to change, or at least to understand Nothing can keep you Apart from God s love No, nothing on earth, Or in heaven above. (From Why is There a Cross, by Kathleen Bostrom) more deeply what Jesus did for us. Here are some resources that provide food for thought, and companionship for your Lenten journey. These and other resources are in the library or on the library table in the upstairs hall. And the Angels were Silent and 6 Hours One Friday by Max Lucado. Lucado has a direct style of writing, and also tells many stories about ordinary- and extraordinary- people. Those things, combined with his passion for telling the larger story of God s love, make his books very vivid and very popular. He has written these and other books, many of which are in our church library. Knowing that Jesus will have the final word gives us courage when we face the problems of our time. That knowledge does not tell us to hide in a room. It does not lead us to bury our heads and say we do not care about the problems we face. Of course we care about what is happening in our world and because of the Resurrection we are able to face those things with hope and great courage. (From 24 Hours that Changed the World, p. 131.) 24 Hours that Changed the World, Final Words, and The Way by Adam Hamilton. All three of these books have accompanying DVDs. Hamilton takes us to the Holy Land, which helps make the life and death of Jesus more real, and Hamilton s depth of knowledge and spiritual insight are illuminating. We have some great kid s resources for Easter as well! Here are some of them: Veggie Tales An Easter Carol Breakfast with Jesus The Miracle of Easter The Beginner s Bible: The Very First Easter Why is There a Cross? You are invited to join us on March 19 th at 10:15 in the Church Library as we discuss The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb. As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all. Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever. Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways. Sometimes there are points on our Christian walks when needs are met so fully, even wondrously, that we have no choice but to marvel at God s goodness. Such is the case with the recent hire of Jennifer O Donnell as MUMC s Children/Youth Ministry Coordinator. Church leadership had identified the youth and children ministry as one of two top staffing priorities for With only ten hours of salary approved for this position, finding a qualified candidate could have presented a real challenge. 7 Moment for Missions DISCIPLE BUILDERS Page 7 A few years ago a group from Murphysboro United Methodist Church began going on Adult Mission Trips. As a church, we have four out-of-state adult mission trips under our belt. What you may not know is that we have a group of men and women within our church that try to do several mission projects right in Murphysboro each year. This group, called Disciple Builders, was the Brainchild of Dan Bratton who had participated in several out of state mission trips. Dan is a retired contractor, and saw a need in our own community. To date, the Disciple Builders have done several painting projects and some small construction projects. They would like to be able to take on more building projects, but they need more help to complete those type of jobs. If you are looking for a Mission Project, but are unable to travel far away or be out of town for periods of time, we would be thrilled to have you join the Disciple Builders. Just contact the Church office and they can help you with contact info. The most recent Disciple Builders project was a painting project for 7:24 Ministries at the home of Ed and Jennifer O Donnell. What great fellowship we had! And a few sore knees, I might add, but the project ended with a great results. See the pictures of before, during and after below. I can personally attest that I got the same Feel Good feeling of accomplishment as I did after finishing a job on the New Orleans Mission Trip. Please pray for this group, and join us if you can. It is a great way to continue on the Discipleship Trail. Disciple Builders Team Member Barb Hughes

This project is co-sponsored by the Murphysboro United Methodist Church and the Murphysboro Kiwanis Club, and our goal is to improve literacy in children in our community. Children become readers on the laps of their parents. This project will provide 34 children in the Murphysboro Head Start program who will be entering Kindergarten this fall with their very own bookcase and a starter set of books. Each bookcase will be handmade by volunteers in our community and will be given to the children in a special Presentation Ceremony in May. To quote author Emilie Buchwald, Children become readers on the laps of their parents. When children have their own books in the home and their families have easy access to books, parents are more likely to read to their children. Our mission is to encourage parents to read to their children by providing them with the opportunity to do so. Please help us achieve our goal of presenting each of these 34 children with their very own bookcase and books by becoming a My Own Bookcase Project sponsor. The cost of sponsorship is $50, and will cover the cost of materials for a bookcase and a starter set of books. If you cannot sponsor a bookcase at this time, any monetary donation you can make would be appreciated. Your generous support will make a positive and everlasting difference in the life of a child.
