Eli (6NC) and Isabel (6NC) had the opportunity to sit in the Legislative Assembly and debate the topic, Should a sugar tax be introduced in Australia? There were student representatives from 18 other schools around Victoria and it was a terrific opportunity for our students to discuss their ideas and gain a sense of how our elected MPs formulate their views on bills. Eli and Isabel represented the school exceptionally well and enjoyed the experience. Maybe in a few years time we will find ourselves voting for one of them on election day. Marsha Van Cuylenburg Teaching & Learning Leader

2 Tournament of the Minds On the 18th August, The OLA Mind Benders (Mia 3/4CP, Xander 3/4CP, Isha 3/4CP, Oliie 3/4FJ, Ella 5OL, Isabel 6NC & Eli 6NC) headed to Deakin University to participate in a competition called Tournament of the Minds (TOM). As part of the competition, we completed two types of challenges, a Long Term challenge that took us 5 weeks to complete and a Spontaneous Challenge, which we had to solve in 4 minutes on the day of the tournament. The Spontaneous Challenge was, as its name suggests, spontaneous, we only had a few minutes to make up a creative and unique response to a problem, which was top secret and that we had to promise not to share with anyone until two weeks after the tournament. The Long Term Challenge was vastly different to the Spontaneous as we could choose from several different problems and we had 5 weeks to prepare and organise our solution. T.O.M was a unique experience for all of us. It took a lot of dedication and teamwork to create the Long Term Challenge, including one lunchtime a week and some after school sessions during the 5 weeks that we were working on the Long Term Challenge. Overall we had a lot of fun and learnt how to work together to come up with the best solution possible. Isabel C (6NC) & Ella S (5OL) on behalf of the 2018 OLA T.O.M Team Father s Day Breakfast and Stall What an amazing morning we had last Friday morning! There was a huge turnout of dad s to the breakfast celebrations in Brigid Hall. Many thanks must go to Louise Grande (James D, 1/2CM) for coordinating yet another wonderful breakfast. Special thanks also to all the mums who assisted Louise in the lead up & in the running of the morning. The Father s Day Stall was again a huge success, special thanks to Kate McGuire (Finn 3/4ET, Molly 1/2ST) and her team of helpers for all their hard work. There would ve been some very happy dads opening presents on Sunday morning. Final Thoughts This reflection came past my desk this week, I thought it worth sharing with you. The Other Side A father was reading a magazine and his little daughter every now and then distracted him. Trying to keep her busy, he tore out one page on which was printed the map of the world. He then tore the page into pieces and asked her to go to her room and put them together to make the map again. He was sure she would take the whole day to get it done. But the little one came back within minutes with the perfect map! When he asked how she could do it so quickly, she said, Oh Dad, there is a man s face on the other side of the paper I made the face perfect to get the map right. She ran outside to play, leaving the father surprised. Reflection: There is always the other side to whatever you experience in this world. This story indirectly teaches a lesson: whenever we come across a challenge or a puzzling situation, look at the other side You will be surprised to see an easier way to tackle the problem. Dear Lord, Give us the wisdom and courage to look at all challenges with a positive attitude. May we always see that there can be two sides to every situation we may come across in our life. Amen. Yours sincerely, Mr Steve Evans Acting Principal

4 EDUCATION IN FAITH Term 3 Catholic Social Teaching Focus: Stewardship of Creation and The Common Good Scripture Focus: Luke 6:20 - Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God Catholic Social Teachings This term we are focusing on the Catholic Social Teachings of Stewardship of Creation and The Common Good. How do I show respect for Creation? The earth and all life on it are part of God s creation. We are called to respect this gift. We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in and for sharing all the wonders and resources the earth gives us. Our changing environment prompts us to stop and think about how we live on our planet. We are called to respond and to adopt new ways of living as Pope Francis highlights in his encyclical, Laudato Si': On the Care of our Common Home. It is the world s poorest communities who are affected by changes to our planet. What is true community? The common good is reached when we work together to improve the wellbeing of people in our society and the wider world. The rights of the individual to personal possessions and community resources must be balanced with the needs of the disadvantaged and dispossessed. The Season of Creation is an annual, worldwide celebration of prayer and action to protect our common home from September 1 to October 4. As followers of Christ from around the world, we share a common role as stewards of God s creation. We see that our wellbeing is interwoven with its wellbeing. We have a moral and spiritual opportunity to care for our common home, and for the sisters and brothers who suffer when it is harmed. This year, the theme for the season is walking together. In walking together, we follow the role of Jesus, who walked with friends on the roads around Jerusalem. As he traveled the byways of his community, Jesus invited us to encounter God through God s presence in creation. Whether by considering the lilies of the field or the grain of wheat that falls to the earth, the spiritual journey of following Jesus is closely tied to the everyday wonders of nature that He experienced in His earthly journey. This Season of Creation, we strive to more deeply understand the lessons Jesus taught us through creation, to more authentically honor our Creator, and to share fellowship with brothers and sisters along the way. As pilgrims together, we welcome the opportunity to awaken anew to the wonder of the Earth, our common home, and to protect the web of life it shelters. Everything is related, and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage, woven together by the love God has for each of his creatures and which also unites us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river and mother earth (Laudato Si, 9).

5 EDUCATION IN FAITH A Prayer for our Earth By Pope Francis All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. Mr Steve Evans Acting Principal Religious Education Leader On Friday 21 st September, we will be celebrating all things footy! Children are invited to come dressed in the colour of their favourite football team this can be AFL / NRL / Soccer we don t discriminate! The canteen will also be providing a special Footy Day menu stay tuned for more details!

7 STUDENT WELLBEING National Child Protection Week (2-8 September 2018) Protecting children is everyone s business: Play your part is the theme this year for National Child Protection Week. We, at OLA, are a welcoming Christian community, living and celebrating with faith and gratitude in the spirit of Jesus. We promote a love of learning, through partnership with families, staff and the Parish community in a just and inclusive environment. We believe that all children have the right to feel safe and to be safe all of the time. At OLA we use the No-Go-Tell strategy when we are feeling uncomfortable about a situation or action. We respond to the person or group by saying... No- Stop, I don t like, it is making me feel uncomfortable. Go- we then remove ourselves from the situation that is making us feel unsafe. Tell- we tell one of the important adults on our 5 finger network list. Every child should have at least 5 important adults they can speak to taking into account different environments (at home, school, hobby clubs, sporting clubs etc:) Check in with your child to see if they know 5 important adults they can go to if they ever feel uncomfortable. We are responsible for each other. In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law of the prophets. (Mt 7:12) The OLA Child Safety Policy can be located on the school website under Our School/Annual Reports/Policies Miss Jacqueline Kovacich Student Wellbeing Leader

We invite all parents to attend by visiting your children s classrooms and taking the opportunity to read some of the wonderful writing that they have been working on this term. It is a great chance for students to share their writing and to think of themselves as authors writing for different audiences. You can also chat to them about the kinds of writing that they most enjoy, as well as the types of books that they enjoy reading. Who Am I? To get in the spirit for next week s Authors Party I wonder if you can name these famous Roald Dahl characters. 1. a) I would much rather read than watch telly. b) I once tricked my dad by supergluing his hat to his head. c) The headmistress of my school hates very small children, especially girls with pigtails. d) When my parents moved out of the country I stayed behind with my teacher. Can you guess who I am? 2. a) I own thousands of ducks and geese. b) I love to eat doughnuts stuffed with goose livers c) I wash every Friday. d) I am just as nasty as Boggis and Bean. Can you guess who I am? 3. a) My house has two rooms with one bed that was given to my four grandparents. b) My father used to screw on tooth caps before he lost his job. c) I get a Wonka Whipplescrumptious Fudgemallow Delight chocolate bar every year on my birthday. d) My grandpa Joe and I got to take a tour of Willy Wonka s famous chocolate factory.
