This year-round process always welcomes new participants: those who are unbaptized; those baptized Catholic, but uncatechized, never having celebrated First Communion and Confirmation; and those baptized in another Christian tradition. Fully initiated Catholics are always needed to serve as sponsors for those interested in becoming Catholic. For more information, please contact the parish office at or office@stmartindp.org. (John 1:39) Sacrament of Reconciliation 11:30 am 12:00 pm 4:00 4:45 pm Tuesday 6:00 7:30 pm - or by appointment Sacrament of Baptism Parishioners who wish to have their children baptized at St. Martin s must attend the baptism preparation class. Children of non-parishioners may be baptized here, provided that there is a family connection with a registered parishioner of St. Martin s. Nonparishioners must bring a letter from their pastor, giving permission for the Priest or one of the Deacons to baptize their child. Parents must also show proof that they have attended baptismal classes either at their parish or at St. Martin s. At least one godparent/sponsor must be a fullyinitiated practicing Catholic. Sacrament of Marriage Contact the parish office at least six months prior to the anticipated wedding date. No wedding date can be set until the couple meets with one of the deacons. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick Those who are seriously ill; elderly individuals who are weakened; those facing or recovering from surgery; children who are sick; or pregnant women may participate in the Sacrament celebrated following any Mass. Please let the Priest know, or by appointment.

2 PASTOR S CORNER October is Respect Life Month and a great time to give thanks to God for the gift of our lives and the lives of others. The Gospel this week reminds us of the commandment not to kill and it can be hard to understand how someone would ever desire to take a life. Last week we heard in Genesis of how God created human life and how at first Adam and Eve were thankful for each others lives. However, after sin entered the world that changed. We begin to think life is not worthwhile when we believe the lie that some life is more worthwhile than other lives. Behind every sin there is always a truth and a lie. The greater the sin the greater the lie and the lesser truth. Adam and Eve were tempted by first being given a great truth like don't you want to be like Gods. They of course wanted this truth. However, they believed they could attain it by eating a fruit or doing something apart from God. When Jesus reminds us of the ten commandments and that all things are possible for God he reminds us that we can only resist sin when we keep close to God. God is our truth and helps us to see where we are seeking truth and where lies have started to grow. If we seek to stand for life then we must always ask God to help us acknowledge the truth that someone desires while helping them to reject the lie. Only in this way can we lead people to encounter God's truth and reject the lie of sin. ************************************** A reminder that our Fall Festival is Oct. 25th and we need everyone's help to make the Festival a success. You can help by bringing items like 2 liter sodas, bottles of wine, game prizes, silent auction items, volunteering to run booths and inviting friends to the Festival. The entertainment is lining up including a new act - Mr. Johnny. The Lions Club will be offering free vision screening for children. The Silent Auction is looking good with wonderful ministry baskets, handmade quilt, afghans, lots of local merchant gift certificates, jewelry, 12 yards of dirt from Rudy, Gift Baskets of Italian Wines/Spirits and much more! Food is going to be spectacular with the Knights of Columbus cooking and added booths featuring Mexican Food, Italian Food from Pizza Cave and of course the dessert table next to the very popular SVdP Bingo! New this year is Wacky World Inflatable Adventure Game and favorites from last year Paper Plane Throw, Wine Bottle Toss, Free Face Painting and much more. Fr. Charlie and Kevin will be in our dunking booth a real crowd pleaser! And, of course, we will close the day with the raffle drawing. This is our major fund raiser for the year, but more importantly it is time for our parish community and others to come together for a festival of fun fellowship, entertainment, games, hearty eating, chances to bid on great items, and perhaps win the raffle! Remember to invite your neighbors, friends and family. Please remember to turn your donated items into the parish office any time, sell your raffle tickets, and bring your baked goods to the office no earlier than, October 23rd or day of. TEXAS TROTTERS The St. Martin de Porres senior group, Texas Trotters will be going to the Wimberley Glassworks to see a glass blowing demonstration on Oct 21st. We will carpool from the church parking lot at 9:45 a.m. The demonstration will begin at 10:30 a.m. Lunch at a local restaurant afterwards. All are invited. We are excited to announce that we are opening registration for our first M.O.M.S. group here at St. Martin de Porres! M.O.M.S. (Ministry of Moms Sharing) is a ministry committed to t h e s p i r i t u a l d e v e l o p m e n t of all mothers and is designed to support and affirm women at all stages of motherhood. Meetings will be held once a month on Tuesday evenings starting in November and ending in June. You can also make your contribution through WeShare. Today is World Mission! In Scripture, we read that St. Paul asked the Gentile Churches to take up a collection to support the Church in Jerusalem. Now we are asked to reach out and support the young churches throughout our world. Your prayers and generous gifts to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve in those on the margins and in most need. We've had 5 women come in for pregnancy tests this morning, all of them after talking with a Sidewalk Counselor!" Know that your prayers and presence on the sidewalk are working. Word of Life Whether it lasts for a brief moment or for a hundred years, each of our lives is a good and perfect gift. At every stage and in every circumstance, we are held in existence by God s love. God invites us to embrace the lives we have been given, for as long as they are given. Every life is worth living. ~ USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities Month of the Holy Rosary October has been specially selected as the Month of the Rosary. Please arrive early for Mass during October, which is also Respect Life Month. We will pray a Rosary for Life starting 25 minutes before Mass. The Rosary is a way of contemplating the face of Christ seeing him - we may say - with the eyes of Mary. ~ St. John Paul II SCOUTS The Jamboree-on-the-Air, or JOTA, is an annual Scouting event that uses amateur radio to link Scouts around the world, around the nation, and in your own community. This year Pack 280 will host a local station on October 17th at the religious education center from 11am-4pm Scouts of any age can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Communication typically requires speaking into a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication can also take place, such as video communication and digital communications. Exchanges include information such as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout rank, age, and hobbies. The stations scouts will be communicating with can be other Scouts across town, across the country, or even around the world! The World Scout Bureau reported that the 2014 JOTA had more than 1 million Scout participants from more than 11,500 stations, nearly 20,000 amateur radio operators, and reached 157 countries. Sanctuary Candle A Sanctuary Candle burns in the Church and the Chapel to indicate the presence of our Lord. The candle burns for 14 days and then is replaced by a new candle. If you would like to donate a candle in memory of a loved one or as a thanksgiving offering ( on the occasion of In honor of, ) please contact the parish office. 4 In today s Gospel, Jesus says: Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then, come follow me. Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? You are invited to come to our next meeting this Wed, Oct in the Education Center to find out if you have found your calling! We provide food at the Food Pantry on Mondays and go on home visits for callers who need assistance with rent/mortgage and utility bills. Some of our brothers and sisters we encounter have a deep faith and know God will provide. Their faith enriches us. Others live in despair and hopelessness; they need our hope and prayer to get through a difficult period because of illness, loss of employment or loved one, disabilities or other unforeseen problems.
