2 December 10, nd Sunday of Advent - The Second Sunday of Advent, B - December 10, 2017 Dear Parish Family, I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least. - Dorothy Day Matthew 6:33 As we continue journeying into our new year of grace with the Second Sunday of Advent, we look to John the Baptist as our model in faith. John reminds us that change and conversion are necessary to make the way ready for the coming of Christ into our hearts. Like John, we are to prepare a way for the Lord and point others to Jesus. Through our own Baptism, we are called to live our lives as disciples of Christ and to call others to that life as well. This Tuesday, December 12, we will honor Mary with the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In this feast, we celebrate her miraculous appearance to Juan Diego, an indigenous peasant farmer, and the image of her imprinted on his tilma (pancho). This is a celebration of trusting the certainty of God s providence and care for us when he calls us to proclaim his kingdom. Mañanitas will be celebrated at 6:00 a.m., followed by Mass in the chapel at 6:30 a.m. Roses are a special part of this feast day! If you are able to bring some to place around the image of Our Lady, please bring them when you come for Mañanitas! ********************************************************** YIKES!!!! If you have looked at the calendar, you will have noticed that Christmas Day is on a Monday this year! That means we will have a very busy few days with all of the Masses.. The Fourth Sunday of Advent will be celebrated with TWO Saturday evening Masses on December 23: 5:00 and 7:00; and Sunday morning Masses at 7:30 and 9:30! THERE WILL BE NO 11:30 MASS ON THE MORNING OF DECEMBER 24! Masses for Christmas will be Sunday, December 24 at 4:30 p.m., 7:00 p.m., 9:00 Blue Christmas Mass, Midnight, and 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 25. NOTE WELL: PARTICIPATING IN ONLY ONE MASS ON SUNDAY DOES NOT FULFILL YOUR OBLIGATION OF PARTICIPATING IN THE TWO SEPARATE CELEBRATIONS OF THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS!!! Because of the very short time following the 9:30 a.m. Mass for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the 4:30 p.m. Mass for Christmas, much help is needed to decorate the church for Christmas! We are all called to invite others to live holy lives. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts, does just that it puts us on the path to holiness and it invites others to be holy, too. Thank you from St. Vincent de Paul Society! The SVdP Society would like to thank the youth of our parish for collecting nonperishables to add to our Thanksgiving baskets. These items are for families we have assisted this past year. The youth also sorted and bagged these items for distribution. We appreciate all the generous donations from our parish family that made this possible. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul delivered 26 Thanksgiving baskets to families and 75 Christmas Wal-Mart cards for children on behalf of our Parish. HUNGER AWARENESS MINISTRY ISTRY The Hunger Awareness Ministry would like to extend heartfelt thanks for all of the food donations our generous parishioners make each week. Our growing community means continually increasing needs for food donations. In addition to the 1 pound bags of dried pinto beans and rice normally collected for the Vincentian Family Center other needed items for the food pantry are non-perishables, like Canned vegetables, Canned fruit, Canned soup, Top Ramen, Peanut Butter, Macaroni n cheese, Canned meat and tuna, Pasta and Cereal. Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never got around to it. Maybe you aren t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too! It is my Birthday on December 25th!! Thank you so much for all the prayers, Because you prayed for me, I received the best of all gifts...life here on earth! The baby shower will be at Christmas when I am born. There will be gift tags near the spiritual adoption crib, so please take one and then bring the gift back to the crib at Christmas (UNWRAPPED). The gifts will be given to The JP II Life Center, The Gabriel Project and The Annunciation Maternity Home. Thank you for your gifts and most especially thank you for your prayers. NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE National Night of Prayer for Life...Friday, 12/8/17 The Respect Life Ministry will be sponsoring the National Night of Prayer for Life on December 8th, beginning at 8:00 pm or immediately after Mass until 12:00 midnight. We unite in prayer for an end to abortion and in reparation for the sins against the Gospel of Life. The National Night of Prayer for Life bridges the Feasts of The Immaculate Conception and Our Lady's appearance to San Juan Diego to honor Our Blessed Mother and to pray for the sanctity of all human life. The Hour of Unity is from 11pm-12am 12am (CST) when churches in every time zone will be praying at the same time! MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES Marriage Certificates signed by Bishop Joe Vasquez are being presented to couples who celebrate a wedding anniversary during 2017 of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60 years. The Vincentian Family Center wishes to extend a heartfelt Thank You to the Parishioners of St. Vincent de Paul Parish for your generous support of the Food Pantry and Thrift Store! The need for nutritious and basic food items is very large, and we often find our shelves looking very bare ~ and then an angel arrives from this parish with a load of food, just in time to re-stock the shelves! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! This outward way of assisting our brothers and sisters in need does not go unnoticed or unappreciated! In addition, there is an opportunity to serve in the Pantry. We invite your family and friends to come participate in this beautiful service as we prepare our hearts and minds for the Advent and Christmas Seasons. The Music Ministry is looking for a volunteer Organist/Pianist to provide music for our Sunday liturgies. Luc Tran Director of MS & HS YM ext. 226 DCYC 2018 is Feb. 2nd- 4th Registration is now open. (Limited spots available) Grab your registration online or Luc. Also, in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe s Feast Day on December 12th, the 1st graders made a paper flower bouquet and presented it to Her in the Alicia Chapel. All Class Christmas Parties will be held in the Parish Activity Center (PAC). Please send snacks for your child to share with their class. All paper goods and drinks will be provided. Confirmation Retreat Registration is now open. You can grab the registration online or Luc. Confirmation Class 1 begins the week of the December 11th. Classes are available on Monday the 11th and 12th at 6:30pm and on Saturday at 9:00am. Confirmands only need to attend one. All classes are located in Portable 1. We are looking for 3 faith-filled energetic leaders for our Ember Team Cohort 3. The Ember Team is a youth group leadership team at SVdP. As a team leader, you help the students develop leadership and communication skills using the planned out curriculum. This position is a two years commitment. Please contact Luc if you are interested in working with a group of wonderful young Catholics. Thank you Fr. Ed for allowing the Youth Group to bring Fr. Leo to our parish and to all who helped make this event possible. Thank you to all who attended the event. I pray that Fr. Leo s message stirred the Spirit in your heart and I am eager to see the fruit you will bear. SVdP Youth Group is very thankful for all of your support.
