1 st Sunday of Lent Baden Powell / Scout Sunday First Baptist Church Halifax February 18, 2018 The Good Shepherd" Artist: Sieger Koder ( ) Singer was a priest and prolific artist, little known outside Germany despite his brilliance.
Baden Powell / Scout Sunday Welcome to our Scouts and families. Scouting's founder, Lord Baden Powell of Gilwell has a birthday next week on Feb 22, Beavers, Guides, Scouts and Venturers will celebrate with skits, cake and the Happy Birthday song. Scouting came to Nova Scotia in 1907 at Port Morien, Cape Breton. In that year, an immigrant from Great Britain formed a troop with seven boys from the Port Morien area. The 36 th Halifax Scout Group has been in existence for more than 30 years. The Troop has 28 youth and 12 Scouters registered. Our other three sections have a combined total of 67 youth and 17 Scouters. It is a thriving group and we are so happy to be part of the First Baptist Church Halifax Community. 2
The Community Gathers for Worship Entrance of Choir During the Season of Lent, we enter and depart quietly without our usual processional and recessional. As in previous years, the choir will only sing one anthem each Sunday, our words following the offering will be spoken and not sung, and we will sing one less hymn. This reflects the contemplative nature of this season of the church year and helps us long for the season of resurrection that is to come. We invite you to use the quieter moments of the Lenten services for reflection and prayer. Welcome and Announcements Silent Prayer and Reflection *Gathering Hymn *Please stand as you are able Rev. Jenny Drewitz #77 Forty Days and Forty Nights (AUS DER TIEFE RUFE ICH) *Call to Worship: Deacon Kathy Schwartzentruber Jesus said, I am the good shepherd I know my sheep and my sheep know me, in the same way Abba God knows me and I know God and for these sheep I will lay down my life. *Prayer of Confession Shepherd us, O Living Christ, so that we may know you as you know us. God is my shepherd, so nothing shall I want, I rest in the meadows of faithfulness and love, I walk by the quiet waters of peace. Shepherd us, O God, beyond our wants, beyond our fears, from death into life. Jesus, Good Shepherd, help us take the time and make the space to hear your call to us. For the times when we are consumed with our own wants and desires, forgive us. May we live in the protection of your flock trusting our shepherd, Amen. *Words of Assurance - Psalm 23 (Inclusive Bible) LORD, you are my shepherd I want nothing more. You let me lie down in green meadows; you lead me beside restful waters: you refresh my soul. You guide me to lush pastures for the sake of your Name. Even if I am surrounded by shadows of Death, I fear no danger, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff they give me courage. You 3
spread a table for me in the presence of my enemies, and you anoint my head with oil my cup overflows! Only goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in your house, LORD, for days without end. *Lenten Hymn: Vs. 1 - #171 The King of Love my Shepherd is (ST. COLUMBA) The King of love my Shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am His And He is mine for ever. Children are welcome to come to the chancel steps during this verse. Rev. Dr. Rusty Edwards Rev. Dr. Rusty Edwards Offertory Anthem Pilgrims' Hymn - S. Paulus Choir Choir *Prayer over the Offering: God Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer in glad thanksgiving for your goodness we offer you our gifts, and pray for the willingness to offer and present our very selves to you. May we be a living sacrifice dedicated to work willingly for your realm of peace and justice in our time. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen. Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Deacon Kathy Schwartzentruber Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 4

The votes are in, and with 75% in favour, the structure that we will be building is the... piano! Thank you to those who voted by donation. We are still about $1500 away from our target to purchase canned food to build (all food is donated to Feed Nova Scotia). With the help of engineer Bryan Darrell and dietitian Judy Whalen we're aiming to win the award for "best meal." There's lots of ways to get involved in canstruction; You can be a "shopper" and transporter of the canned food to the church and to Sunnyside mall, consider being part of the practice team on March 3, the building team on March 7th, or the take down team on March 10th. (sign up sheet across from the parlour). Maybe voting is your thing and you pop by Sunny Side mall between March 7-10 or online and vote for the FBCH structure for the people's choice award! Questions? speak with Rev. Jenny. al Annual Meeting Sunday February 25, following worship service Assembly Room (light lunch will be served) Please mark your calendars for our Annual meeting where we will consider the reports from staff, boards, committees and other groups. We will receive the reviewed 2017 Financial Statements, and will receive reports from our nominating committees. Copies of the 2017 Annual Report are now available in hard copy in the Narthex or outside the parlour. For those who prefer a greener version, we have sent this electronically out to all on our mailing list. 6
Auxiliary Meeting Monday February 25, 1:30 3pm Parlour Please mark your calendars. All are welcome. We encourage new members to join us. Tellers Needed! We are looking for volunteers for the following months: July and August (4 each month); September (2); October (3). Please contact Joe O Brien joe_obrien@eastlink.ca if you can help. The New Bulletin You have noticed that the Bulletin has changed to a larger format and may be wondering if this is an economical use of our resources. The new format uses larger size paper which allows us to combine two formats into one - the large print bulletin and the "regular" bulletin - and helps us to reduce printing overall. Even though the larger paper is slightly more costly, we are now using only two sheets per week rather than three and this also means that the copying charges (we pay a per page charge) have also gone down. The larger format saves us $41 on paper and approximately $200 in printing costs on an annual basis. Thanks to Mary and the Assistant Sextons, we have an accurate count of bulletins used each week and can adjust the weekly run of bulletins in response. If you are "past paper" the Bulletin is also distributed each week by so that you can download it to a device and go paperless. This Week in Our Church: Feb Please refer to the calendar on our website for a complete list of activities. Church Office hours: Tues. - Fri. 8:30 am - 12:30 pm, 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm. This Week Monday Office Closed, Heritage Day Monday - 1:00pm, CABF Strategy Tuesday 9:45am, Parents & Tot, Creche Tuesday 12noon, Hospital Chaplaincy Tuesday - 4:00pm 6:00pm, Open Sanctuary Wednesday - 11am, Clergy Meeting Wednesday 4:00pm 6:00pm, Open Sanctuary Thursday 4:00pm 6:00pm, Open Sanctuary Thursday 7:00pm, Choir Practice Saturday 8:30am, Men At Work, Stage & Sanctuary Next Sunday: February 25, 2018; 10:30am Creche, Worship 2nd Sunday in Lent Wearing a Towel Rev.
