10 Student s corner CULTURAL IMPORTANCE OF FESTIVALS IN INDIA Diwali A festival of joy and celebration Diwali -Diwali is a festival of light. It comes after Dusshera. Many people like Diwali as it is a famous festival of Hindus. Most of the children like this festival. This day, people embrace each other with love and give gifts & sweets to each other. This festival is celebrated all over India. On this day, people worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. After this, children burst crackers. Thus it is a festival of joy and celebration. DEVESH VI A All the Indian festivals like Diwali, Dussehra, Durga Pooja, Ramzan, Bakrid, Eid, Christmas, Baisaki etc., have social and religious importance. They make all the people forget their enmity, narrowness and bitterness and unite them to observe these festivals with a sense of togetherness. I believe that all people of India should observe these festivals with a sense of purity and sanctity. People of all types of religions celebrate festivals as they bring the feeling of unity in diversity. For the sake of their friendship, society, religions and universal brotherhood all people must join hands at least once a month to celebrate festivals in India. PRANJAL VIII
11 CELEBRATING DIWALI AS AN ECO FRIENDLY FESTIVAL If we want to celebrate Diwali as an eco friendly festival, we can do the following things: 1. Stop bursting crackers as it can cause noise pollution. 2. Ban the use of crackers after 10 pm. 3. Do not burst crackers near pets, especially dogs, as they can get scared and run away. 4. If we light Diyas instead of crackers, we can cut of the costs of crackers, and we can also reduce off the effect of global warming and air pollution too. 5. Even if we have to burst crackers, we should not burst rockets etc... as too much use of crackers can also cause serious breathing problems. 6. We should also not use crackers such as fountain crackers, rocket crackers, stick crackers, which can seriously injure us by burning our hands and body parts. 7. The Indian Institute of Science estimated that:- If we light 10 Diyas, instead of rocket or fire cracker, we can save upto 40% of cost and cut the noise by 87.5 Decibels A strip of fire crackers can make a noise upto -100 Decibels which is even more than the noise of a Rock Concert. 13 BALLET DANCING Ballet is a type of performance dance that originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15 th Century and later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread, highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary based on French terminology. It has been globally influential and has defined the foundational techniques used in many other dance genres. Becoming a ballet dancer requires years of training. Ballet has been taught in various schools around the world, which have historically incorporated their own cultures to evolve the art. Traditional classical ballets usually are performed with classical music accompaniment and use elaborate costumes and staging, whereas modern ballets, such as the neo classical works of American choreographer George Balalnchine, often are performed in simple costumes and without the use of elaborate sets or scenery. 14 Teacher s Corner The Nails in the Fence There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 42 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, 'You've done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there and a verbal wound is just as bad as a physical one. So be careful with your words once they are said. They can only be forgiven, not forgotten.
