1 UNIT 9#3 TIMOTHY K/1 ST GRADE CONCEPT GOAL The Bible is the authoritative word of God. LIFE'S TOOLBOX Christian students will learn that the Bible is like a toolbox that God has given us to help us live our lives for him. They will be encouraged to study the Bible and know what it says. Non-Christian students will learn that in the Bible God teaches that the only way to be saved is through Jesus. 2 BACKGROUND INFORMATION / TEACHER HELPS Both Paul's letters to Timothy address the problem of false teaching that threatened the church (1 Tim 1:3-11; 4:1-7; 6:3-5, 2 Tim 2:14-19; 3:6-9; 4:3-5). We can conclude from these passages that the false teachers were not opposed to using the law (Old Testament) to prove their own ideas. In addition, they added myths and genealogies to formulate their beliefs. Both Gnostic and Jewish teachers focused on genealogies: the Gnostics had developed myths involving the genealogies of the "eons between God and man;" the Jews had mythological interpretations of the Old Testament genealogies. Without an exegetical approach to interpreting the Bible, people were free to develop their own interpretations. Consequently, the false teachings resulted in quarrels and friction among its followers. Paul identifies as part of the false teachings the opposite extremes of self-denial (asceticism, 1 Tim 4:1-5) and self-gratification (sensuality, 1 Tim 5:6, 2 Tim 3:4-6 and materialism, 1 Tim 6:5, 9-10, 17-19). It also appears that the "self-gratification" leaders exploited their followers sexually and financially. Today we see similar types of false teaching. Therefore, if we desire to stay faithful to God's truth, we must pay close attention to Paul's counsel to Timothy to handle accurately the Word of Truth. This lesson echoes Paul's exhortation to accept the Bible as God's only reliable Word to us and to correctly interpret and use the Bible in our daily lives. Take some time to consider your own individual study and application. How long has it been since you spent time digging into the Word to discover more about God and His truth for you personally? What is the last truth you applied as a result of teachings or personal study? Do you take seriously the admonition to know and use the Word accurately? Is your relationship with God and others growing as a result of the time you devote to your study of the Word? 3 LESSON PLAN SET UP/ INCORPORATION MIN LEARNING ACTIVITY #1 LG GROUP GOAL: To illustrate the need to use proper tools for building. TRANSITION 2 MIN LESSON LG GROUP Activity Stations: Worksheet Connect the tool with its use Instruction: Give each child a worksheet to match tools to the objects. While children work on their papers, talk about the importance of knowing the tool's purpose and how it works. Then, in order to effectively accomplish the job we must use the tool. The more we use it, the more we are able to use it well. Craft Toolbox Instructions: Give each child a printed toolbox to decorate, then cut out and assemble. Give each child a sheet with the handle and a sheet with printed tools and hardware. Have them color and cut out handle and tools to put in their toolbox. Story Read the Amelia Bedelia book. Missions Prayer Instructions: Talk about and pray for Oasis Giving campaign and adopted missionary child. Game Musical Chairs Instructions: With one less chair than the number of children, form a circle. Play musical chairs. Use the provided CD of "The BIBLE." When you stop the music, the child without a chair will choose a situation (attached at end of lesson) out of the toolbox, a teacher to read and a different teacher to follow the directions. The teacher who follows the directions will use the wrong tool ("ham it up" for some good laughs). The child will then see if he/she can find the correct tool for the teacher to use. Continue through all four situations in the same way. Let's sit down now and learn about the tools that God has given us for our lives. The teachers pretended they didn't know how to use the tools the right way, but you knew. The Bible is like a Christian's toolbox. It is full of wonderful tools. It tells us the truth and helps us live the way that is best for us. Our key verse is, "... be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15b). Who would like to tell me what you think it means? God has given us His word the Bible. The Bible is like a toolbox to help us live our lives for Him. Like the tools in a toolbox, we need to know what tools we have and how to use those tools so we can be good workers who teach others about Jesus. As we study, learn and use what is in the Bible, we will be good workers for God. Timothy learned the Bible from his mother and grandmother when he was a child like you are. The Bible tells us what is true about God and what we need to know so we can become God's children. Because Timothy knew the Bible, he knew that he, like everyone, was a sinner and needed to be forgiven. GOOD NEWS Our key verse today is, " be a good workman, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15). To be a good worker for God means that you study and know the Bible and do what it says. What if we read our Bible like Amelia Bedelia? Amelia Bedelia makes mistakes when she hears and does what people say. This is because she doesn't take time to make sure she understands exactly what is said. I'm going to read a story we made up about how Amelia Bedelia might understand a Bible passage. XENOS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP, , K/1 st Unit 9#3 Page 3

4 Amelia Bedelia went to an OASIS class with her friends. She listened until the teacher read, "Jesus said 'I am the good shepherd' and 'You do not believe, because you are not My sheep.'" Then she jumped up and ran to her house. Her friends came to see what happened, as they were very worried about her. They found her at home, quickly sewing a sheep costume. "What are you doing?" they asked. "I'm making a sheep costume!" she replied. "I want to believe in Jesus and He said I had to be a sheep." "What are you talking about?" they questioned. "The teacher read from the Bible that Jesus said, 'You do not believe because you are not my sheep.'" Then her friends started laughing and said, "Oh, that's not what that means." LEARNING ACTIVITY #2 LG GROUP TRANSITION 2 MIN LEARNING ACTIVITY #3 SM GROUPS OPTIONAL ACTIVITY Did Amelia Bedelia understand the Bible teaching? When Jesus said, "You are not my sheep," He was talking about people. The Bible talks about God as the good shepherd and people as sheep. Jesus said that people who don't know Him aren't His sheep. We know Jesus when we ask God to forgive us for our sins because Jesus died on the cross for us. We can't be like Amelia Bedelia if we want to know God and live the way He planned for us to. When we study the Bible, learn what it says and choose to live the way it says, we will <<key verse>>. And God will make us workers and work through us in big ways to tell people about His amazing love. Drama Mr. Fixit skit performed by Drama Team Let s get into small groups to talk about this and pray. What is our key verse? What does it mean? What was Mr. Fixit's problem? (He didn't know how to use his tools the right way.) What is the toolbox for knowing God and His truth? Do you want to be like Amelia Bedelia or Mr. Fixit or like Timothy? Does it really matter whether we read the Bible or not? Why? What are some ways you can learn the Bible (especially if you cannot yet read yourself)? Who can help you? Let's pray now and thank God that He has given us the Bible so that we can learn what is true about Him and what we need to know to become His child. If you don't know Jesus, you can ask Him to forgive your sins right now so you can know Him. And let's pray that those of us who are Christians will "... be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15b NLT). 6 Worksheet: Situation Cards Situation #1: You are building a tree house and you need to nail the boards together. Go to it! (Teacher, hold up a screwdriver and a nail.) Situation #2: You are putting a soccer goal together and you need to put the bolt through the holes and tighten the nut on it. (Teacher, hold up a hammer, along with a nut and bolt.) Situation #3: You are going to help your dad replace the handles on the cabinets in your kitchen. Screw in the new handles. (Teacher, hold up pliers and a screw.) Situation #4: You're helping your classroom teacher change a bulletin board. All the old staples need to be pulled out to get the pictures down. (Teacher, hold up a wrench and staple.)
