Larry Krueger pastorkrueger@splcwaco.com This year marks 500 years since Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses to the Castle Church door on October 31, 1517, marking a time period of history in the world known as the Reformation. For my article this month, I share with you an excerpt from a book titled, Luther and His Times, written by E.G. Schwiebert, in which he describes the events of that day. Now a young monk in professor s garb enters the street from the Black Cloister and walks purposefully toward the Market Place. His companion is Johann Schneider. The two men enter the Schloss Gasse, which rises gradually to the Castle Church. Reaching this beautiful Gothic edifice, the men pass through the quaint, covered gateway and ascend the boarded walk leading to the main north door of the Church. Now the young professor draws from beneath his gown and nails to the Schwartze Brett a document. This act in itself was not unusual, for this sturdy wooden door, ever since famous in history, served as the medium for announcing both university and public events. The document was none other than Luther s Ninety-Five Theses, on which he summoned his fellow professors to debate. To the passer-by there is nothing particularly startling in the opening words: Out of love and zeal for the elucidation of truth, the following theses will be debated at Wittenburg, the Reverend Father Martin Luther, Master of Arts and Sacred Theology, presiding. He begs that those who cannot be present at the oral discussion will communicate their views in writing. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. When Luther announced his Theses, his motive was exactly as stated in the introduction, love and zeal for the elucidation of truth. Luther firmly believed that Tetzel was misrepresenting indulgences without the knowledge of the officials of the Church and that these officials need only be informed of the practice and the evil abuses would be corrected. But there was much more to the Theses than a mere attack. Already apparent was an undertone of the later Reformer of which Luther himself was completely unconscious. His new revelations from the study of Romans had changed his whole conception of religion. In Luther s Ninety-Five Theses was reflected the great progress he had made by that time as a Biblical student. Although still clinging to the Catholic framework, the content of the Theses revealed a new spiritual meaning. (excerpt from Lutheran and his times, by EG Schwiebert, St. Louis : Concordia Pub. House, 1950) That new spiritual meaning would give birth to what is referenced as the three solas of the Reformation: Grace Alone, Faith Alone, and Scripture Alone. These three principles still define the central doctrines of the Lutheran Church today and reflect our firm confidence that we are saved by grace through faith, not of works, lest any man should boast (cf. Eph. 2:8-9). Sunday Worship 8am & 10:30am Bible Class/Sunday School 9:15am As we celebrate this 500 year landmark may we give thanks to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, for His grace, for our faith, and this truth of Scripture! To God alone be the glory! Love God and love your neighbor, Pastor Krueger

2 PAGE 2 MESSENGER OCTOBER 2017 A Message From Our Associate Pastor Rev. Matthew Hardaway pastorhardaway@splcwaco.com It almost always takes time. Frequently more time than what we anticipated, hoped for and more time than what we thought we had to give to it. What is it? The list is too numerous to count - packing a house to move, unpacking a house after moving, getting vehicles registered in the state of Texas, building a hammock for your wife or a loft bed for your daughters, that quick run to the drive-thru, calling technical support for your computer or customer support for your medical insurance. There is another it that many of us have experienced, are in the middle of experiencing, or will be experiencing in the future - seeing someone come to, or come back to, a life of discipleship and following Jesus Christ. This "it" always seems to take the most time of all, and to make matters worse, we know that eternal matters are at stake here, not just feeling like we have lost time out of our day. Perhaps you have spoken to this person on numerous occasions about being active in discipleship and worship. Maybe you have been waiting for an opportunity to do so. Maybe you don t know what you should do next. The great Pete Seeger in the late 1950 s penned the following famous words, which were released by The Byrds in December of 1965: To everything - turn, turn, turn There is a season - turn, turn, turn And a time to every purpose under heaven Actually it was King Solomon towards the end of his life that was led by the Holy Spirit to write in Ecclesiastes 3:1, For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. In verse 7 we read, a time to keep silence, and a time to speak. As Children of the Heavenly Father we have been given words in our hearts and on our lips to share with those who are outside of the faith and to those who have wandered away. You are a sinner for whom Christ sacrificed Himself for in order to redeem you from your sins and gain you entrance into the family of God. You and I both have loved ones, friends and acquaintances who need to hear this message. Perhaps they have heard it many times from your lips, and right now what they need from you most is a season of silence and your prayers for the Holy Spirit to work through those words to bring them to faith. Perhaps they have not heard it. In that case what they need most is for your prayers for the Holy Spirit to guide you to a proper season of speaking. In either case, the season for prayer is never ending! Almighty God, You desire not the death of a sinner but that all would repent and live. Hear our prayers for those outside the Church. By the working of your Holy Spirit through the Word and we your servants, gather them into Your holy Church to the glory of Your name; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen! NOMINATIONS FOR TEXAS DISTRICT OFFICES In preparation for the 2018 Texas District LCMS Convention, nominations for officers are now being accepted. In this process the eligible voting members of Synod (pastors and congregations) may submit nominations. This means that St. Paul Lutheran Church has the opportunity to nominate people for consideration. Positions available for nomination can be surveyed on the district convention Web site at: ( Our congregation is in Area B, so please reference the Nominations Packet for Area B to see the offices for which our congregation is eligible to nominate. Members are encouraged to read through this information and bring forth names of those they think may be qualified to serve in the various positions. At the October Congregation Meeting on October 22, these names will then be considered by the congregation for placement into nomination.

3 OCTOBER 2017 MESSENGER PAGE 3 A Message From Our Pastor Emeritus Rev. Walter F. Albers pastoralbers@splcwaco.com St. John writes, We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). And there are many ways to express that love. I read a devotion recently by Tony Dungy from his book entitled, Uncommon Life, and he tells of a way to show that love that really made me stop and think. He told of a man in the New Testament by the name of Joseph of Cyprus, a man who worked with Paul. However, most people call Barnabas because Barnabus means son of encouragement. And from that we can assume he was one who would always encourage others. And when you think about it, we all need a Barnabas in our lives. Because of sin, life can be tough. We have bad news from the doctor, loss of income, death of a loved one, family and marital problems, broken relationships, and on the list goes. And when these times come, we need people to lift us up. And we need to be a Barnabas to others to encourage and lift them up. Because when we encourage others, we are expressing love for them. We are doing for others what we want them to do for us. And the more encouragement we give, the more we are likely to receive. Just think for a minute about the opportunities you have to encourage someone. Start with your family. When was the last time you did something very special for your spouse, not because it was Valentine s Day or an anniversary or birthday, but just to express your love for them. Or maybe your child was going through a hard time, or needed help with homework; were you more concerned about how it affected your watching TV, reading, or other plans. Or consider our church family. How often do we gripe when the least little thing goes wrong, but never thank or praise those who are serving ushers, teachers, lawn crew, kitchen help, etc. No matter where you meet people, be assured they could us a word of encouragement. We see this throughout the pages of scripture. In Deuteronomy 1:38 the Lord tell Moses he will not enter the promised land but to encourage Joshua because he will lead Israel to inherit the land. When God called Isaiah to be his spokesman he told him in Isaiah 1:16-17 Tell the people, stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. And Paul in Ephesians 4:29 tells the church Do not let unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful in building others up (Encouragement). And in the book of Hebrews it is so important we read But encourage one another daily (Heb. 3:13). And just consider how our Lord daily encourages us. The future is uncertain and fear creeps in and our Lord says, Do not be afraid, for I am with you (Is. 43:5). We have problems and he says, Cast all your cares upon me, for I care about you (1 Pet. 5:7). We feel alone and forgotten and he reminds us, God has said, Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you (Heb. 13:5). When guilt reminds us of our sin and failures we are assured in 1 John 1:9, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. No matter what the need, our Lord has words of encouragement for us. And he does this because he loves us. What a difference we can make in the lives of others if we just take the opportunities we have each day and find ways to encourage them, when things are going well and when things are not so well. And we can do it, because He first loves us, and that is what love does. MISSION SUNDAY * OCTOBER 8, 2017 This year for our Mission Sunday on October 8, we are pleased to welcome as our guest preacher, Rev. Ryan Neuhaus. Rev. Neuhaus is, of course, the son of Vince and Suzanne Neuhaus. He is a 2005 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He began his ministry as a church planter in Buda, Texas. 8 PAGE 8 MESSENGER OCTOBER 2017 A Message From Our Deaconess Dcs. Suzanne Krahn dcskrahn@splcwaco.com Katharina Von Bora Doctora Lutherin Katharina (Von Bora) Luther (who lived in the Tudor era) wife of Martin Luther AKA my beloved Katie, Doctora Lutherin 1, my rib, the Boss of Zulsdorf (name of their farm) or the morning star of Wittenberg. 2 Katie was born 1/29/1499 in Lippendorf, Germany near Leipzig, a daughter of impoverished nobles. Reports say Katie s mother died when she was between 3 and 5 years old, & then sent to a Benedictine cloister in Brehna to be cared for and educated. At 8 or 10 years, she was sent to the Marienthron cloister at Nimbschen where her aunt was the abbess. She was a Postulant (candidate for the order) until age 16, when she took her vows and became a novice (probationary period). 3 In her early teens Katie began to hear of Martin Luther & his brave new doings & astonishing doctrines. 4 Katie was just one of the ladies who did the most for the Protestant Reformation movement, along with her fellow cloister sisters Katherine Parr, Anne Askew, and Magdalene von Staupitz. Katie s role helped define the Protestant family and set the tone for the clergy marriages. 5 Katie and 11 of her fellow nuns escaped from the Cistercian Convent in 1523 after hearing and reading about the Reformation. Luther s writings about grace came from faith alone, not through prayer or works, impacted Katie and her sister nuns the most. 6 Luther himself, through help from friends, Sister Magdalene, Leonard Koppe (the city councilman of Torgau) and a merchant helped Katie and her sisters escape from the convent on an Easter morning on a wagon delivering herring to the convent. They hid either in the smelly fish barrels or behind them and made their way to Wittenberg. Luther was unable to get all their families to take them back (fearing severe punishment, even death for harboring a fugitive under both Canon and Civil Law 7, so he arranged to find husbands for all of Katie s sisters except for her. 8 After a couple years, Katie decided she wanted to marry Martin Luther. 8 Finally Luther (a confirmed bachelor) decided to marry Katie. One of Luther s closest friends, Philip Melanchthon, did not believe Luther s marriage to be real; he thought it to be a scandal causing severe damage to the Reformation and its cause. Luther decided that his marriage would please his father, rile the pope, cause angels to laugh, and the devil to weep. 9 One June 13, 1525, only one day after he proposed to Katie, they were joined in Holy Wedlock, a 42 year old former monk and a 26 year old former nun. 10 Though some would say, especially Roman Catholics, that this marriage was just a way to avoid his celibacy vow, Luther s Justification by Faith was understood by Luther as freeing people to enjoy their status as creatures and their vocation within the created orders. Within these, marriage was most central. 11 Luther and Katie lived in a large former old Augustinian monastery, the Black Cloister, eventually called Lutherhaus. Katie was a good manager and quickly took over the business of running the monastery, and later bought a farm to help supplement their income. She became a seasoned entrepreneur (breeding and selling cattle, running a brewery and boarding students), frugal manager, excellent housewife, gave birth to 6 children, adopted 4 more, worked alongside the nurses in the hospital and set up at Lutherhaus. 12 She ran the family business so that her Herr Doktor could go about his business as professor, his church work, and as Reformer of the Roman Catholic doctrine. 13 Two of their children died, and Katie suffered a miscarriage. They were devoted, loving parents who were diligent on teaching the Faith and discipline. 14 Luther died in 1546 from failing health, after only 21 years of marriage. Katie was heartbroken. She wrote, God knows that when I think of having lost him, I can neither talk nor write in all my suffering. 15 Luther s death would have left her impoverished, but he had made sure all his assets would go to Katie (as was not the norm at the time). Katie was forced to leave Lutherhaus twice because of the outbreak of two wars, & then a third time when the Black Plague broke out. As she fled Wittenberg to Torgau, she was severely injured in a horse and wagon accident and died 3 months later in 1552 at the age of Their living children went on to become quite successful as John (the eldest) was a councillor of state to Elector John Frederick II; Martin Jr studied theology; Paul got a degree in Medicine and was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Jena; and Margaret married a nobleman and had nine children, some becoming talented Christian writers. 17 Martin once said, There is no more lovely, friendly, and charming relationship, communion, or company than a good marriage. 18 Katie Luther was a great legacy for strength of marital fidelity & a godly example of marriage within the clergy. 19 Truly, theirs was a marriage made from Heaven! 10 PAGE 10 MESSENGER OCTOBER 2017 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God By Steve Randolph As we celebrate the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation, we sing A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Dr. Martin Luther s best-known hymn. Luther based this hymn on Psalm 46, which begins: God is our Refuge and Strength, a very great help in time of trouble. We re not afraid even when the earth quakes. Most scholars believe that Luther wrote both the words and the music for this hymn, although for many years, it was thought that Luther borrowed the tune, perhaps from an old Gregorian melody. Recent research, however, points towards Luther as the composer of the tune. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God has been called The Battle Hymn of the Reformation. This printing, in Andrew Rauscher s hymnal, was printed in 1531 and is signed by Martin Luther. I will close with excerpts from a quote about A Mighty Fortress Is Our God by Louis Benson ( ), a renowned Presbyterian hymn- writer and scholar: It was the Marseillaise of the Reformation. It was sung at Augsburg during the Diet, and in all the churches of Saxony, often against the protest of the priest. It was sung in the streets It was sung by poor Protestant emigrants on their way into exile, and by martyrs at their death. It is woven into the web of the history of Reformation times, and it became the true national hymn of Protestant Germany.
