PASSING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST Pastor Kerrin CALL TO WORSHIP (Based on Colossians 3:12-15) As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, we are to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. We are called to bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, we are to forgive each other. Just as the Lord has forgiven us, so we also must forgive. Above all, we are to clothe ourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Lord, let Your peace rule in our hearts! We indeed are called in the one body, and we are thankful! HYMN No. 600 Wonderful Words of Life OPENING PRAYER Lord, we admit that any change can be a scary thing. It s not that we are against change, for we know in our heads that change is happening all around us. But in our hearts, we fear being changed. Teach us to bring our fears to You in faith. Help us to look beyond those fears for Your unseen hand at work in our world. Show us the way to navigate the changes we may need to make in our own lives, and in the life of this church, so that we may bring glory to You and grow Your Kingdom in this place. 4 Lenten Study For Lent this year, we will be offering an all church study. This is an opportunity for any small group to join in studying the book Final Words by Adam Hamilton. We invite small groups to still meet during the regular times and regular location, but in having multiple groups study the same material we can discover greater unity in the church and a deeper understanding of our faith. This is also a great time for individuals to join a small group or to read the material themselves. We will also have a sermon series based off of the book during Lent. DO YOU LIVE IN NORTHCREST, GREENHILLS OR NORTHRIDGE VILLAGE? We are in the process of coordinating facilitators to lead our all church Lenten Study, Final Words at the Cross at these locations. If you would like to participate in a small study group, please contact Pastor Nikki. With Sincere Thanks On behalf of my family I would like to thank all those who expressed their love and concern to us during the time Rita began her fight with cancer, her time in the care center and later following her passing. Your prayers, gifts of memorials, food, and hugs were of great help through this difficult time. It was brought home to me again how important it is to be surrounded by a loving family and a loving church family. A special thanks to pastors Kerrin and Nikki for their pastoral care and to pastor Kerrin for her leadership in a wonderful memorial service. Thanks again. 5 Report from Ames Ecumenical Housing Inc. (AEH) On February 19, Ecumenical Housing board met at Stonehaven apartments at 421 Stonehaven Dr. in Ames. AEH is waiting to hear back from HUD in regard to the appeal based on compliance issues. All present HUD forms and paperwork is up to date at this time. Presently there are 13 vacant apartments at both locations, but there are two move ins slated for March, two applicants being interviewed who want to move into Stonehaven ASAP and two applications who would like to move in the Spring. There are three move outs slated for the coming weeks. There are several individuals on the waiting list who are working on paperwork which can be reviewed once it is complete. Both Sharon and Emily met with the tenant Activity Board to plan several future socials and other activities. Activities such as Friday Morning Coffee, Foot Care Clinics and Daily Bingo are going well and are well attended at both locations. A new Tai Chi group is now meeting at Keystone and there is a new partnership with Stevens Memorial Chapel. There is a new snow removal policy being implemented at both locations. Windows have been replaced in several of the apartments. Maintenance is presently waiting for one more bid before being able to start the updates on the out of date security system. Submitted by Steve J. Hanlin, Board representative for First United Methodist Church Thank you for the food. There was 120 pounds of food delivered to MICA, including 52 cans of fruit. This is twice as much as we sent for the whole month of January. MICA serves over 300 families a month. The second half of the month is always very busy, as food stamps come at the beginning of each month and are running short at the end of the month. There are so many worthwhile causes, and I know choices have to be made which ones to support. I appreciate that MICA is one of them for many of you. The carts are empty again. Please contact Ken Van Pelt at with questions. Spring Break for Hunger Help Meals from the Heartland pack 1 million meals during Meals Madness at the 2019 Spring Break Packaging Event! Save the date to join your friends and family March 20, 2019 at the meal packaging center Lincoln Street in West Des Moines. We re inviting students, parents, families and all community members to the sixth annual Spring Break Hunger Fight. We will be sending teams from First UMC on Wednesday, March 20. We have 20 spots reserved this year for the 9:30-11:30a.m. shift. Let Nicole know as soon as possible if you plan to go this year. There are more spots available but we ll need to reserve those soon if necessary. We can drive the church van down, so if you need a ride, please reserve your spot ASAP. Join us as we prepare for Lent and Easter Parents Morning Out Parents and pre-school age children at FUMC are invited to participate in Parents Morning Out, sponsored by United Methodist Women. Childcare is provided each Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. in the church nursery by a parent and UMW volunteers. Each family volunteers to assist once a month. 8 WE WELCOME YOU! Our Welcome Center is located in the gathering space near the elevator. Please stop by if you have questions or would like to get more information about the church. Be sure to mention if you are a first time visitor. Nursery care is available in Room E203, in the Christian Education Unit, on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings for children under the age of 5. All of our workers are trained and screened. Items for children s worship bags are available in the gathering area. Saturday night services are held in the chapel on the main floor. Restrooms are located in the east hallways and by the elevator. Ushers are available at the entrances of the sanctuary to assist you with hearing devices, large print bulletins or any questions you may have. An emergency phone and defibrillator are located on the wall near the west entry.
