3 CLOSING VOLUNTARY This Little Gospel Light of Mine Keith Kolander Let us be aware this musical offering is a statement of faith to send us from worship into service. Please be respectful of those who choose to remain to listen. LEAVING FOR SERVICE We are called to be God's hands and God's feet. This has been a consistent message and theme over the last few months. Now, we are calling all of God's children who are available to serve. Our local non-profit that provides services and support to women and children in their darkest hour needs help moving furniture and boxes We will be moving a 3 bedroom residence on Saturday, July 1st and we will perform some light cleaning as well so, if you cannot move furniture and boxes, please consider some light cleaning. We will meet at the church at 8am sharp on Saturday, July 1st and we will work until the job is complete. Please RSVP so we can be sure we have the hands (and hearts) we need. What a blessed opportunity this is... Chad & Carrie PLEASE JOIN US.. FUMC is well known for their delicious homemade pies. The ladies have been making frozen fruit pies for many years. They would love to teach the art of pie making to anyone who is interested. Pies are usually made every 6 weeks, early on a Wednesday morning. If you would like to join them, watch the church calendar for the next pie making date or contact Marlene Bell at No previous experience is needed! JOIN IN THE PARADE --- CELEBRATE AMES FUMC Do not let the parade pass you by as Dolly Levi sings about in the Broadway musical, Hello, Dolly! Join with others from Ames FUMC and our Cub and Boy Scouts in representing our congregation in this year s 4 th of July parade. Dress in vividly bright colors! Meet in front of the downtown Hy-Vee Drug store 30 minutes prior to the start of the parade and look for our scout troops and van. If the location changes We will send out a cyber-news to update you. 4 FROM OUR AMES FUMC FOUNDATION Our Foundation board of directors met on June 19 and received a report showing that as of June 14 our portfolio of funds had a total of $1,108,198. Ryan Meeks and Jennifer Hendrian are our managers of funds through US Bank. Already in 2017, we have received two very nice large sum gifts from the estate of Robert Carstens ($20,000) and from Fern Fincham ($53,557.02). Alison Goodman, Mackenzie Abrams, Caitlyn Grebner, Izaak Schmitt, and Lawrence VanderWerff were the recipients of scholarships that will be granted to them as they enter college this fall. From the $62,523 funds available for the Foundation to disperse this year, the funds have already supported spring scholarships, a continuing education for Pastor Cephas to become a Stephen Ministry Leader, Kat Hawley for participating in the Simpson College Youth Academy, our FUMC Tech Communications director, our ASP Team for this summer, and a grant was given to help pay the expenses of the Peace Circles that the congregation will soon be experiencing as a follow up to the congregational assessment tool. Mary Beth Oostenbrug serves as chairperson/president and Marty Sankey is vice-chairpersons/vice-president of the Foundation board. PEACE CIRCLES TO ASSIST AS FOLLOW UP TO OUR CONGREGATIONAL ASSESSMENT TOOL REPORT The Church Assessment Tool at First United Methodist Church revealed high levels of conflict with competing cultures at play. Church leaders have accepted the recommendation of our CAT Interpreters that Peace Circles will assist us in finding reconciliation and restoration for the congregation. The Peacemaking Circle process will help us to listen deeply to one another so that we might learn how to move forward in a healthy way. Using a circle process is not simply a matter of putting chairs in a circle. The circle is a dialog process that works intentionally to create a safe space to discuss very difficult or painful issues in order to improve relationships and resolve differences. The intent of the circle is to find resolutions that serve every member of the circle. The process is based on an assumption of equal worth and dignity for all participants and therefore provides an equal voice to all participants. Every participant has gifts to offer in finding a good solution to the problem. On June 29, the members of the Church Council and members of the Staff Parish Relations Committee will participate in the first of the Peacemaking circles. Look for information in the weekly bulletin or through cyber-news for times in which the whole congregation will be invited to participate. The plan is to have several of these Peace Circles happen over the next few months. Our facilitators will be Diane McClanahan and Carla Cain from the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Services; these two women were also the interpreters of our CAT report. Hopefully YOU will be willing to participate in this process.

5 United Methodist Women will host their Guest Day on Thursday, July 13, at 9:30 am in the Fellowship Hall. All women of the church and guests from area United Methodist churches are invited. Sarah Paulos from Iowa Interfaith Power and Light will speak on Climate Justice, a current UMW study topic. Please RSVP to Sally Peterson petep@mailmis.com by July 7 if you plan to attend. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Our Mission Committee has worked with Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa ( Building Houses, Building Hope ) on a current construction at 306 Wellons Drive in Ames. Congratulations to William and Jane Edwards on the birth of their new granddaughter, Lillian Melissa, born to Sarah and Wes. Happy 65th wedding anniversary to Darrell and Maxine Thomason. Darrell and Maxine s anniversary was on June 22nd. Helen Johnson took a fall and broke her pelvis. She will be living in Story City at Bethany Manor. Be sure to mention if you are a first time visitor. Nursery care is available in Room E203, in the Christian Education Unit, on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings for children under the age of 5. All of our workers are trained and screened. Items for children s worship bags are available in the gathering area. Restrooms are located in the east hallways and by the elevator. Ushers are available at the entrances of the sanctuary to assist you with hearing devices, large print bulletins or any questions you may have. An emergency phone and defibrillator are located on the wall near the west entry.
